The colour of this wine is quite developed, brick red with onion red brown hue and a near translucent depth. At first impression, one could not help but draw comparisons to an aged Pinot Noir, and there is the immediate impression that the wine might be just over the hill, but this is not so. This is a magnificent example of an aged Shiraz, which displays a remarkable degree of finesse and power. The nose is complex, and leaps out of the bottle upon drawing the cork. Superb perfumed layers of confectionary, old leather, spice, coffee, cocoa followed by an unexpected hint of mint. The palate does not let the wine down, in spite of the relatively light body weight when compared with a young Shiraz. There is immense power and concentration. Velvet smooth tannins. Mouthfilling layers – perfectly intermeshed. Confectionary, spice, coffee, cedar and again a hint of mint. The degree of flavour and persistence is unexpected – and only reinforces the unique position that Hill of Grace holds as one of Australia’s great wine icons.
