The 1982 Leoville Las Cases was certainly amongst the most fruit driven of the 1982’s, relying heavily on its primary fruit flavours as opposed to the general trend of building secondary fruit flavours, which the French winemakers found much more interesting and sophisticated. In the line up of the 1982’s, the Leoville was more developed than the Chateau Mouton Rothschild or Chateau Latour, yet still remains a superb wine.

The colour is still holding up, with deep crimson hues. The nose reveals aroma of cigar box, cedar, followed by notes of earth, truffle and spice, with a smoky end note. The palate is showing outstanding length of flavour although the fruit seems to be drying out, and one cannot help but feel that this wine was at its peak a couple of years ago. Flavours of spiced cedar and cigar box emerge over a layer of earth, liquorice and leather. Very fine tannins, yet still showing some firmness. Very long aftertaste of cedar and truffle.
