The Mount Edelstone vineyard was planted in the 1920's in a rich sandy loam soil on the eastern slopes of Mount Edelstone, meaning gemstone, near Keyneton, high in the Eden Valley region of South Australia. The 70 year old dry grown vines are low yielding, producing intensity of colour, spicy fruit flavours, great complexity and palate length. Handpicked, made using traditional winemaking techniques and matured in small oak barrels, the Mount Edelstone wines have received awards at National Wine Shows each year since 1956.1980 was an excellent vintage producing superb quality fruit. Good winter rains, mild spring, relatively cool summer and dry conditions during harvest.Brick red/ruby colour, sweet, silky developed flavours showing tarry leather, mossy, earthy, cedar and balsam wood, vanilla and coconut, blueberry jam, mid-weight and fleshy, good acidity, soft tannins and good length.
