The second world war is finished and a triumphant vintage for Sauternes. Sauternes has the ability to hold in the bottle for many decades, and the change of flavour corresponds to the deepening of colour. The more onion brown, orange the colour development, the less the honey and apricot flavours. This bottle is alive, and a wonderful example of developed Sauternes. Onion brown, orange colour with green olive hues. Superb complex nose, aroma of toffee, spice, honey and prunes. Total concentrate of flavour, with a layer of sweet maderised fruit still evident. Mouthfilling layers of toffee, caramel, prunes and spice. The acidity is still holding up, the fruit is beginning to dry out, but there is still plenty of richness and lusciousness to create an exciting sensory experience, with extraordinary prune and concentrated toffee aftertaste. Continue to cellar this wine for another 50 years or so – the fruit will slowly fade, yet the prunes, toffee and caramel will persist.
