Made from the Briarston vineyard (planted '94) and House Block (planted '85). A very bright green gold. A refined and complex bouquet of citrus peel, pear, dried honey and subtle marine scents. Even better on the saline, mouth-filling and beautifully balanced palate. I love the touch of grip on the long finish. A wine you'd still love to have a few bottles of tucked away in the cellar, eight to 10 years from now. I've said this before, and it's worth repeating, but Coldstream Hill's top wines are extremely well priced. Drink by 2035.

From a single vineyard planted in 1994, this superb Pinot was matured in French oak for a period of 9 months of which 25% was new. Deep red to dark red heart with black tinged edges and a vibrant red hue. Alluring scents of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise waft through the nostrils with a perfumed like intensity followed by spicy cedar, forest floor and fresh herb notes. From the Deer Farm vineyard in Gladysdale. 5% whole bunches. A medium, bright crimson. A pure-fruited bouquet with raspberries, red cherries, rose petal and just a little sous bois as it sits in the glass. There's a burst of flavour as it hits the medium-bodied palate, balanced by superfine, persistent tannins. And good as this is now, this has terrific ageing potential over the next six to 10 years, and probably longer. Drink by 2035.

Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley, Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday. The fruit for this wine was sourced from low yielding, mature G Block with a variety of handling and fermentation techniques, including the use of whole bunches. This wine was matured for ten months in new (47%) and seasoned French oak barrels.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a bright red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are perfumed aromatics of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and subtle anise which are trailed by spicy vanillin cedar, fresh herb and forest floor notes. Rich red to dark cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits make a powerful entrance. Vanillin cedar, forest floor, infusions of fresh herbs and spice lie underneath. Quite supple in it’s flow, refined yet sturdy tannins provide ample structure across the back half. Long, expansive finish.

While James Halliday no longer lives in the house he built at the winery, his picture-perfect vineyard photos grace the labels, and his legacy here will always live on. Sourced solely from Block G, planted in 1988, this is another impressive and, no doubt, long-lived Reserve Pinot. Dark fruits, violets and spices like nutmeg and clove pervade the nose while the palate is concentrated without being heavy. Firm, yet supple and persistent tannins round out a wine that will still be providing pleasure 10–20 years from now. Drink by 2038.

Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole with the first vineyards planted in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to shiraz - the great tradition of McLaren Vale - and has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region.
Red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Intense dark cherry and ripe red currant aromas jump out of the glass followed by some dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco notes. Juicy red currant and ripe cherry fruits flood the mid weighted palate overlaying a red liquorice, dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco back drop. Excellent fruit intensity and flesh with slightly chalky tannins and bright acidity. Long, generously fruited, spice laden finish.

Such a reliable performer. I probably say something similar most years. Sometimes the well of inspiration runs dry when it comes to my introductions. Bright, crunchy, energetic sort of wine. Red cherry, raspberry, iron filings, some dried herb and almond. It’s medium-bodied, has a light grainy grip to tannin, good varietal flavour, and a lively finish of excellent length. Good stuff. From five vineyards and seven clones, which illustrates the importance of the grape for Coriole, and the region; 11 months in older oak. It’s a regional benchmark for a reason. Medium weighted, as usual, transparent, redolent of cherries, Mediterranean herbs, a dusting of spice and warm earth scents. Reliable may sound condescending, but this is a bottling that never disappoints. Indeed, it consistently overdelivers. It’s another excellent release. Drink by 2029.

A super scrumptious Tassie Riesling that shows superb concentration, drive and textural volume.
Located on the Freycinet coast of Tasmania, Craigie Knowe Vineyard was first planted in 1979 by then Hobart dentist John Austwick. Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Intense lime, citrus and mandarin scents jump out of the glass trailed by some green to red apple and flinty mineral notes. Mouth watering lime, citrus and mandarin fruits completely engulf the palate showing superb concentration, drive and textural volume. Crunchy green to red apple and flinty mineral elements are echoed across the back half. Crisp acidity with a long, super scrumptious finish.

First released in 1993, this wine was renamed d'Arry's Original in honour of third generation family member Francis d'Arenberg Osborn, universally known as d'Arry, to honour his lifelong services to the wine industry.
Decked out with succulent black fruits, this is a rich, concentrated and chewy textured blend that delivers terrific value.
A blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Shiraz matured in a mixture of new and used French oak barriques for a period of approximately 20 months. Deep midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice aromas emerge from the glass complimented by vanillin oak, whiffs of scorched earth and peppered fennel notes. Rich, concentrated and opulent, the weighty palate is flush with succulent black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice flavours which are backed by a robust tannin structure that’s somewhat concealed by the volume of fruit. Vanillin cedar, scorched earth and blackpepper elements lurk underneath. Finishes long and juicy with a chewy mouth feel.

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.

Darnley’s View is a creation from the Wemyss Company in Fife, otherwise known for their flavour-themed whiskies. The name celebrates the moment in 1565 when Mary Queen of Scots spied her future husband, Lord Darnley, at the family’s home, Wemyss Castle in Scotland. The company makes two gins - a London Dry and this spiced version which employs a selection of berries, seeds, peels and roots. It's more intense on the nose than its London Dry counterpart, offering up gently spiced scents of juniper, turmeric, coriander seed and muted cinnamon. Light on entry, but developing good concentration, there's a medley of spices amid the juniper and gingery warmth that carry through to the finish. Some unusual textural qualities combine here, while bottling at 42.7% is said to enhance the key botanicals. A gin that will come into its own during the Autumn and Winter months, or try it in a Gin Toddy or Negroni. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

A buoyant and fluffy mousse holds well over a pale straw coloured base that has flecks of gold around the edges. A very fine bead showing good persistence. Excellent aromatics with baked bread, citrus and yeast lees leading the way. Subtle toast and almond notes ensue. Well meshed flavours of yeast lees, baked bread and citrus overlay an oily toast and almond back drop. Airy feel with good tension, crisp acidity and a refreshingly savoury aftertaste.

Light straw-gold colour. Rich nose of bruised pears, honey and butter on toast. A full style, quite weighty with its rich golden fruits and toasty lees development all on show. Great length; there’s ample acidity to keep it driving while the fine mousse ensures both creaminess in texture along with refreshing lift to the dry finish. This is the peak of the Diplomatico range, as created by Golden Barrel Awards 2011 Master Rum Blender of the Year, Tito Cordero, and comes appropriately packaged in a stylish tapered bottle with a heavy set base and a cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper. Ambassador is matured in x-bourbon barrels before finishing for a couple of years in x-Pedro Ximenez (sweet Sherry) casks. Clearly, this is where things get serious for Cordero. It is a full throttle, 100% pot still rendition without filtration or compromise that stands as a benchmark in its category. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, the saturated, burnished mahogany colour leaves fat, glass-staining legs. Sensuous, mildly prickly aromas open with choc fudge, mocha, brandy cream and fruit cake. Cocoa and mocha accentuate with aeration, with the spicy fruit cake notes returning. From start to finish, the palate is a masterpiece of flavour choreography, beginning light, soft and gently spicy, slowly building in concentration, unfolding pulsing spices, intense dried fruits (raisin, date) and liquorice strap while fine-tuned acidity provides razor’s edge balance and a sense of elegance. It finishes clean, fresh and dry with a molasses aftertaste followed by a liquorice strap fade that reverberates over twenty minutes, however don’t be surprised if you’re still tasting this after an hour. It stands comfortably alongside the top two or three rums we’ve been fortunate enough to experience. Bravo! 47% Alc./Vol. (2011 batch tasted).

If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’. Quality Caribbean rum has as many permutations of aromas, tastes, textures and strengths as any group of wines or spirits. The rum market in Australia has increased exponentially and the overall quality is superb. We now have access to many small and large producers who are vying for attention and the very reasonable prices mean rum is not just a passing fad.
Aside from the familiar Caribbean island groups, more and more people are becoming aware of a ‘mainland’ rum tradition. Think Nicaragua, Gautemala, Panama or Venezuela. The latter, already famous as the spiritual home of the rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, is now finding its rums eclipsing that legacy. The country has a number of highly regarded offerings, but those from the Distilerias Unidas in La Miel on the northern slopes of the Andes lift the bar highest.
Their Diplomatico label is the international reference.
We prefer to let what’s inside the bottle do the talking, but it is impossible to overlook this venture’s remarkable accumulation of twenty plus international awards since 2007 (54 medals in contests worldwide), including the SIP Awards, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Miami Rum XP, Monde Selection and other big guns. Even if the show circuit is irrelevant to you, a different kind of achievement came in October 2011 when the company’s Maestro, Tito Cordero, was honoured at the Golden Rum Barrels Awards as the World’s Best Master Blender. He was the first Venezuelan to receive the award. Given that so much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product, this was the rum world's supreme commendation of Cordero's skill and outright quality fanaticism.
A reinvigorated project that stemmed from an early Seagrams investment in the 1950s, passed on to Diageo, and is now in the custody of the Ballesteros family, the distillery is adjacent to the Hacienda Saruro, where much of the sugar cane is grown. Average daytime temperatures of 30-31C drop by 6-7C at night, a differential which when coupled with high humidity benefits cane growth: it concentrates the sugars and favours the ageing process. Different varieties are grown to make sugar honey and molasses. Molasses is preferred for the light rums, sugar cane honey for the heavy. While many producers are struggling to get molasses with a sugar content above 45%, Diplomatico are ahead of the pack before they even begin. Venezuela regularly achieves upwards of 60%.
Not unlike other distilleries, here pot stills are for richness and weight, column stills for adding freshness and elegance. Between the two are batch kettles that carry out secondary distillations of semi-heavy rums. Varying proportions of each create a hierarchy of styles. Barrel regimes vary, including ex-bourbon with some re-filled single malt whisky casks. Sherry casks are now being experimented with to great effect, as the 2000 Vintage release bears testimony. Finishing departs from the mainstream, as most Diplomatico rums are given only a delicate filtration prior to bottling - gentle enough to maintain fatty acids and maximum mouthfeel - then filtered using 3 micron-thick filter pads. It is minimal interference by world standards, Cordero considering it a formality to ensure the rums retain their clarity and brilliance when exported to cooler climates.
Diplomatico's flagship cuvee is aged for up to twelve years and typically blended from around 80% pot still rums; the remaining 20% are lighter styles from column stills. Cordero mixes a little cane sugar prior to blending which is another reason why the flavour seems amplified compared to some others in the stable. Stylistically this edges Ron Zacapa 23 for satisfaction and sheer saturation and is the one that many of our customers measure other rums by. Those whose taste preferences tend towards the savory may misunderstand what is an unashamedly dessert / quasi- liqueur styled effort that falls into a sub-category of its own. Almost as decadent as a rum can get without cloying the mouth and falling out of balance - there are more complex rums around, but not near this price, nor do they have the same uncanny ability to incite superlatives. The packaging depicts Don Juancho Nieto Melendez, who was a noted rum enthusiast in the town close to the distillery. It's reported that, being something of a globe trotter, over many years "...he amassed a large collection of rums which he took great pleasure in offering his guests at the lavish dinner parties he held at his house."
Tasting note: Brilliant copper with a gold hue. Heady and decadent scents of creme caramel, fresh coffee, chocolate fudge, vanilla and spice. A silky, creamy mouthfeel yields a plush array of dried fruits, raisins and coffee-caramel, counterpointed by a gently warming spirit heat. Perfect balance, seamless integration. Very long, mouth coating aftertaste of vanilla and liquorice strap with a subtle dark chocolate finale. Avoids the too sweet trap. A stunning rum that will instantly convert many a Muscat or PX Sherry drinker. This remains one of the most re-purchased spirits on our shelves. 40% Alc./Vol.

Sourced from eight estate-owned vineyards within the Wairau Valley with vines on average 28 years old. The fruit is whole bunch pressed to tank for fermentation and matured on lees for 5 months before bottling.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with green tinged surrounds. Pungent nose with aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and kiwi fruit leaping out of the glass. Some herbaceous grassy, grapefruit and flinty mineral notes are also evident. Super scrumptious, the palate is lined with zesty passionfruit, gooseberry and kiwi fruit flavours with some subtle herbaceous characters, lime and mineral elements lying underneath. Showing outstanding intensity and drive it finishes with crisp acidity and a long lip-smacking finish.

A wine that catches you off guard with its familiar waft of candle wax and sparkler flint. There’s a wistful white floral aroma of frangipani and freesia drawing you in. As it opens, notes of pomelo, white pear and pineapple emerge. The wine then lights up like fireworks – the soft, sparkling kind – revealing hints of lemonade, yellow melon and a glittering acidity that is carefully bridled. Nuances of celery heart and fresh ginger follow, adding complexity. It is exquisite in its balance – teetering tropical notes, the fragility of herbal suggestion and an utterly moreish finish. A rich, blockbuster Rasteau that marries opulence with a robust structure.
Rasteau's 880 hectares of vines are planted on marl and red and yellow clay soils over sandstone with rounded stones covering some sectors, which in heatwave vintages act like health insurance against hydric stress. By law, the Grenache component in the dry red blends must be 50% minimum, with Syrah and/or Mourvedre 20% minimum and other grape varieties of the appellation tolerated up to 20%. In 2010 the Rasteau AOC was created allowing the wines to be named after the village, dropping the Cotes-du-Rhone tag and joining the likes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas at the pinnacle of the wine hierarchy in the Southern Rhone.
A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah sourced from vines over 60 years old and 40 years old respectively. The Syrah component is aged in old 225 litre barrels whilst the Grenache is aged in concrete vats for a period of 15 months. Very deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Wafting through the nostrils are potent aromatics of black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry which interact with some herb du Provence, scorched earth and pepper notes. The rich, blockbuster palate delivers a concentrate of black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruit that’s super succulent. Ripe chewy tannins firm up the back half with infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth and pepper lying underneath. Superb power with a long pepper laced finish that ties opulence with a robust feel.

Domaine des Escaravailles has been owned by the Férran family since the 1950’s. It consists of 65 hectares of vineyards, 40 of which are on the rocky, clay-limestone hillsides of Rasteau. Les Sablieres is a Grenache Syrah blend sourced from vines between 30-50 years old.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Fragrant red to dark raspberry, dark cherry and red liquorice scents flood the olfactory senses with some provincial herb and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Light to medium bodied, rich juicy red to dark raspberry, cherry and red liquorice fruits are featured over a provincial herb infused back drop of earth and pepper. Mildly chewy tannins and fresh acidity with a bright, succulent finish.

Domaine des Escaravailles Le Ventabren is typically a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Carignan that is aged in concrete vats for 12 months. The Grenache and Carignan vines are 60 years old whilst the Syrah comes from 30 year old vines.
Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice flood the nostrils trailed by some scorched earth, herbs du Provence and pepper notes. Rich, concentrated and possessing a muscular structure, the medium to full bodied is awash with black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits. Notions of scorched earth and peppered dried herbs lie underneath. Amply powered it has ripe chewy tannins and a long seductive yet mildly robust finish.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.
Refreshing and gorgeously shaped with a classic Chablis oyster shell like salinity.
Brilliant pale straw colour with glistening green tinged edges and a watery hue. Attractive pear, lime and green apple scents are highly expressive in their flow out of the glass complimented by some wet stone, faint dried honey and a classic Chablis oyster shell like salinity. Vivid pear and lime fruits carry a river stone like mouth feel across the palate. Lending further nuance are infusions of fresh Mediterranean herbs, green apple, wet slate and an oyster shell like minerality. Refreshing acidity with a long, gorgeously shaped, saline laced finish.

Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months.
According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.
Black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are ripe heady scents of black raspberry, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry which meld into scorched earth, dried meats, hints of leather and pepper. Rich black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits are backed by a muscular tannin structure. Notions of scorched earth, leather and peppered dried meats add a further nuance to the back palate. Dry, slightly grippy finish. Excellent power and concentration with a long robust aftertaste.

I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence. It has a more classic style in its Provençal aromas and flavors of peppery herbs, garrigue, sandalwood, and charcuterie, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s a classic, complex, gorgeous wine in the making.

Domaine Les Aphillanthes is comprised of 30 hectares and located near Gigondas in the Rhone Valley. Farmed organically and biodynamically, proprietors Daniel and Hélène Boulle maintain a high commitment to quality, keeping only the finest 80% of grapes for their own use and selling the rest off. The 2020 releases are not as dark fruited and show more freshness and an energetic feel.
An equal parts blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Very deep dark red black in colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Seductive aromas of red to dark raspberries, red liquorice and red cherries intermingle with scorched earth and light pepper notes. On the mid weighted palate rich dark raspberry, black cherry and red liquorice fruits make for an intriguing mix of flavours. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and blackpepper lend further interest. Slightly chewy tannins finishing with excellent freshness and a long dark raspberry, red liquorice, peppered herb infused aftertaste. Delicious.

Domaine Pichot is a 24Ha family estate in Vouvray on the right bank of the Loire, where vignerons dedicate their time to the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, locally coined ‘Pineau de la Loire’, to produce dry, sweet and sparkling whites. The Coteau de la Biche is the only vineyard of the estate, planted on silex layered over limestone slopes. Domaine Saint-Damien is run by Joel and Amie Saurel whose family has been tending vineyards for four generations, dating back to 1821. Until relatively recently they sold all of their grapes to negociants. In 1998 they brought on consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie and haven’t looked back. Of the estates 42 acres of vineyards, 30 acres are in Gigondas with vines that have an average age of 50 years.
A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah matured in large old foudres for a period of 12 months.
Dense midnight black dark red core with a bright red to dark red hue. Wafting out of the glass are intense dark raspberry, liquorice and black plum scents which are complimented by some black cherry, violet, provincial herb, scorched earth and pepper notes. Rich, concentrated and succulent yet showing remarkable freshness, the palate is drenched in a tidal wave of dark raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are framed by muscular tannins and vibrant acidity. With a family history of winemaking stretching back to the 18th century, Dominque Portet was the man behind the establishment of Taltarni and Clover Hill.
Produced from a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Shiraz grapes. Damask pink tinged colour. Alluring scents of peach, strawberry and raspberry set sail through the nostrils with impressive intensity. Some blood orange, pomegranate and wet stone notes ensue. Silky, concentrated and uber delicious, the palate is flooded with peach, raspberry and strawberry fruits. Pomegranate, gentle musk and wet stone elements sit in the background. Douglas Laing’s The Gauldrons represents the Campbeltown region through a range of blended malts. The exact make-up is known only to the Laings, but an educated guess says they're heavy on Glen Scotia, simply because of how scarce Springbank and Kilkerran are. This limited edition is unusual for being finished in Orange Wine Casks, sourced from the cellars of Jerez de la Frontera in Southern Spain. Besides walnuts, honey, ginger and toasted almonds, the secondary maturation is reported to leave traces of tangy orange with an almost otherworldy edge. 3000 bottles were produced at 52.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Nose: Immediate hints of orange marmalade, touches of cough syrup, jammy apricots and some light notes of marzipan. There’s a thin layer of cereals lingering, as well as green olives and some ozone, but then we veer into the likes of cherry-flavoured candy canes also. Taste: A mixture of roasted peanuts, char and liquorice with a hint of sourdough. Also honeyed influences, orange pith, nectarines and a very gentle smokiness with soft mineral notes. Water highlights the distillates oiliness and enhances the stone fruits. Finish: Medium length. Sweet spices with barley husks and citrus zest. Quite cereal-forward there in the end. A whisky with character, The Gauldrons does a good job representing the Campbeltown region. There’s a funkiness combined with coastal elements, but also a pleasant sweetness to bring balance. It seems to have improved compared to how I remember it. The Gauldrons Eclipse loses some of its Campbeltown-esque qualities, outshined by the orange wine finish, presumably. Douglas Laing have been well known as a bottler of blends, and since the mid 1990s, for two well-established independent brands under the very successful Provenance and Old Particular labels. About a decade ago, they expanded into a range of seriously good Blended Malts. It started with the instantly recognisable 100% Islay edition named Big Peat. That paved the way for what was to become their 'Remarkable Regional Malts’ series – vatting different single malt whiskies from each official whisky region and the islands. The collection doesn't cut corners, sourcing from some of Scotland's most respected names, including Macallan, Ardbeg and Caol Ila. The family's passion for these creations is partly explained by Cara Laing's personal affection for blended malts. “In a way, single casks are easy,” she says. “They’re either ready to be bottled or they’re not. Notes from the bottlers... This whisky expresses a distinct coastal character with a style that bears the mark of the proximity of the sea. Given Tormore has mostly been a workhorse for blends, official bottlings didn't exist until 2004. Subsequent releases under Pernod Ricard never gained wide recognition, and the void has only been filled by independent offerings. In June 2022, Elixir Distillers (the company behind a slew of UK brands such as Port Askaig and Elements of Islay) took over Tormore distillery from the corporate giant. New bottlings have followed; however, this much-overlooked distillery will still be a novelty for most. Douglas Laing filled 276 bottles from single refill hogshead DL17247 at 41.6% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... The nose is attractively round and full of buttered burnt toast and milky cereal hues. On the palate detect butterscotch, malt, appealing spices and gentle lemon citric tones. That big malt impact is still therre on the finish, plus bourbon based vanilla flavours.

Douglas Laing's new, luxury packaging for their 'Black Series' employs monochromatic colours complemented by gold foil details. Each bottle is hand-filled and features an embossed metallised label, glass stopper and the handwritten signatures of Fred and Cara Laing. Black moleskin cases carry a certificate of authenticity. Seldom on the market nowadays, this should be a no-brainer for Clynelish fans and savvy collectors. It's also a tiny outturn, with a mere 129 bottles decanted from a refill hogshead at 47.5% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.
Other reviews... Colour: pale gold. Nose: we have a Clynelish that is much softer, much more on ripe banana, very gentle spices, old ointments, a very old bottle of Verveine du Velay, Arquebuse (has anyone tasted Arquebuse?) followed by very light tobacco, a bit of hay, even straw, and very ripe mirabelles. Not extremely typical, perhaps, but absolutely charming. Palate: it could be another distillery, I wonder if it was around this time that Clynelish had thoroughly cleaned its receivers and thus eradicated all the 'gunge' that gives the distillate its proverbial waxy side. In any case, even if it could be another distillery, it's a tremendous malt, soft, complex, very elegant, with honey rather than beeswax, almond paste, very ripe apples and pears, serviceberry liqueur... All this is really very pretty. Finish: medium length, refined, more on almonds and pistachios. Also reminiscent of a very high-quality amaro. A salty hint at the very end of the finish. Apart from the extreme age statement and the stellar quality, collectors should note the tiny outturn of this particular release - just 176 bottles from a single refill hogshead. As for the style, says one fortunate taster: "It's sublime. No need to say more. We've reached a level where we can't use words and all we can hope for is another half-centilitre." Be quick. Other reviews... Colour: light gold. Nose: the house style when there’s no sherry. Direct, slightly fermentary, with raw wool, modelling clay, damp chalk, and slate… You get the idea—it’s rather mineral, simple, almost youthful, yet to me, of an almost Caravaggesque beauty. Nothing is missing, and nothing is superfluous. Mouth: citrus and pepper, plus seawater and apple juice. That’s it—it’s little, and it’s a lot. A new kind of old Springbank—abstract, simple, magnificent. Isn’t complexity overrated in whisky? (Of course not—pure b*ll*cks.) Built to secure a reliable supply of grain whisky for William Grant & Sons blends, when it opened in 1963, Girvan was the largest grain distillery in the world. It remains one of the most important sites in the William Grant portfolio. Like other grain producers, compared to single malt distilleries, Girvan flys under the radar. It's usually bottled by independents, and even then rarely. However in 2013, Grants took the unusual step of marketing Girvan under its own label. The price for the official 25 year old is now around $500 (and it's only 42% ABV). Enter Douglas Laing. As part of the Old Particular single cask range, we're able to offer two double-decaders at direct import prices. The original Timorous Beastie, immortalised in Robert Burns’ famous Scots poem “To a Mouse” was a timid, little field creature. Echoing the national bard’s wit is the presentation of this whisky, though less so the liquid inside, which promises a robust and characterful medley of vanilla, malted barley, meringue, honey and citrus flavours. Also bottled without chill filtration at 46.8% for maximum flavour.
Other reviews... Soft and floral with perfumed lavender soap, peach, green apple, and parma violets. It floats in the mouth, dispensing flavors of sweet apple, custard, tangy tangerine, hard candies, green plum, marshmallow, and white pepper. ...[Batch 1 tasted] Tried the NAS (WF 85), tried the 18 (WF 86), tried the 21 (WF 89) and tried the 40 (WF 91) but never the 10. Colour: white wine. Nose: fresh as a daisy, so floral, subtle, with green melons, yellow peaches, fresh hazelnuts, angelica, rhubarb, and just a drop of vanilla essence. Mouth: fresh and really full of pears, of all kinds. Williams first, naturally. Hints of Gueuze, hops, and tangerines. It’s a pretty light and fresh style, perhaps a little timorous indeed. Some sides remind me of Glenkinchie. Finish: short to medium, a tad ale-y. Hints of asparagus in the aftertaste. Comments: perhaps a little shier than its compadres? In 2018, Douglas Laing rebranded its 'Rock Oyster' whiskies to 'Rock Island'. One report suggests it was because oysters have a negative connotation for some people. The Laings were concerned it put some consumers off. Besides the label, we can assume nothing has changed in terms of the liquid inside the bottle which includes malts from Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay. The ten year old was released in July 2019 and was followed by Rock Island 21 Year Old (a more limited bottling). 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... Nose: The nose is initially barley-rich and buttery, developing to wave-soaked rocks with gentle peat smoke and citrus fruits. Palate: The palate bursts with a beachy quality – sea spray, black pepper and damp ash. Finish: The finish goes on and on, with wave after wave of wood embers, orange peel and gentle spice.

A gorgeously plush and rich yet refined Blewitt Springs Shiraz.
Dune is a project of brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd (next generation Coriole) using fruit sourced from their vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Blewitt Springs is known for deep sandy soils on yellow clays where Shiraz typically ripens later than other parts of McLaren Vale. It typically produces Shiraz of lifted dark fruit, floral and meaty notes, the tannin is fine yet chalky and the wines are often medium bodied rather than full.
Impenetrable inky black colour with a deep dark red black hue. Captivating dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents sail out of the glass with plenty of intensity followed by some dried herb, scorched earth and peppered meat notes. Gorgeously plush and rich yet refined in it’s flow, juicy dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry fruits swoop across the medium to full bodied palate. Fennel, spicy vanillin cedar and peppered earth elements line the back half. Seamlessly integrated tannins show great polish and only serve to enhance it’s glossy textural feel. Understated in its power it finishes long and generous yet highly finessed.

All shiraz, a destemmed ferment and one with 30% whole bunches, blended once dry and aged in foudre (70%) and older oak for about a year. Spicy, laced with earth, iron and rust, this sits more at medium weight, as is the tendency at this address. Black cherries and berries, wild raspberry, spiced sour plum and twiggy notes, an autumnal feel, with a rustle of leaves, coal, split redgum and curing smoke. It’s a wine that both amplifies and refines with air, building flavour detail and intrigue while also becoming more lithe and weightless, the blue and red florals building. It’s such a charming wine, and the value is extraordinary. Drink by 2034.

Elanto Vineyard is fast becoming one of the most compelling projects on the Mornington Peninsula. Established in 2018 by Elizabeth and Tony Todaro with Sandro Mosele at the helm, the 10.6-hectare Balnarring site is planted at an extraordinary density over 11,000 vines per hectare, four times the regional norm. Yields are kept to just 300-500g per vine, resulting in small, concentrated bunches that carry the depth and power Sandro has long championed. Volcanic red soils, southeast exposure, and the cooling influence of Western Port Bay provide the setting, while meticulous organic farming and uncompromising vineyard detail push the wines into rare territory.
The three Chardonnay vineyards, Verge, Buckshot, and Seawinds, span 4 hectares on the lower slopes, where silt over clay transitions to lighter, gravelly soils rich in buckshot. The cool southerly airflow and soil profile preserve natural acidity and enhance mineral notes. Each vineyard was harvested and vinified separately, with hand-sorted fruit whole-bunch pressed directly into a mix of new and older French oak barriques for natural fermentation. After 10 months in barrel, the wine spent an additional two months in large concrete vats before bottling.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green highlights around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense white peach, pear, ripe nectarine and dried honey aromas engulf the olfactory senses. Notions of crème brulee, citrusy nougat, cashew, subtle bacon fat and spice then chime in for additional complexity. Rich, concentrated and enveloping, a creamy textural feel is perfectly counterpointed by fresh acidity with mouthfilling white peach, fleshy pear and nectarine fruits melding into a creme brulee, citrusy nougat, delicate cashew and spice back drop. Boasting outstanding power and depth, it has a long expansive finish that displays a Burgundian like refinement.

A terrific follow up to the inaugural release, coming out with more weight and body. Mid-straw gold and bright. Floral and waxy with lemon, spiced stone fruit, brown spices and honeycomb – lots within yet definitely in the savoury spectrum. Fuller bodied, rich, almost al dente with its phenolics and layers of texture via creamy, nutty lees. It’s detailed yet supple, with a succulence thanks to the all-important uplifting acidity. The Elanto vineyard – at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula – is 10.6 hectares of 11,111 vines each hectare, which equates to a vineyard made up of 117, 777 individual vines. This is the second release of a chardonnay from this remarkable vineyard. It’s made by Sandro Mosele. 85% of this release went through malo where very little of the 2023 release did.
This is seriously good. The intensity of fruit is the thing, and the associated length, though there’s a keen textural element and just plenty of wow factor besides. Yellow peach, citrus, nougat, honeycomb and lemon blossom notes charge thoughout. There’s a lot of fruit, a deal of acidity, and a sizeable serve of oak, but all work together and all feel commanding. Drink 2027-2032+

The 2024 Balnarring Chardonnay is tighter, brighter and more primary than the 2023 tasted alongside. In the mouth, the wine is svelte and textural, and it shows all the sophistication of the site. The elevated malolactic percentage here contributes to the elevated sense of creaminess in the mouth. It's an excellent wine and will be even better in time. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. The fruit is handpicked into 10-kilogram baskets. The winery and vineyard are adjacent, and once in the winery, the fruit goes over a sorting table with rollers at the end of the elevator. The fruit is pressed direct to barriques—all French, mainly Sirugue (from the Forêt de Tronçais, in central France)—and fermented wild, with wild malolactic fermentation (5% to 10%). The 2023 Chardonnay wouldn't go through wild malolactic fermentation, but the red eventually did. The wine is taken out of barrel at Christmastime, after which it spends two months in concrete, and then goes to stainless for a further four months. Drink 2025-2039.

The five Pinot Noir vineyards, Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside, and Basalt, span 6.7 hectares on the upper slopes with basalt-rich soils. Each vineyard was harvested and vinified separately, with chilled, destemmed fruit (3-5% whole bunches) undergoing cold soak and natural fermentation in concrete vats. After 25-30 days on skins, the wine was pressed and aged in a mix of new and older French oak barriques for 11 months before blending and bottling.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise soar from the glass trailed by some spicy cedar, forest floor, subtle dried herb and brambly rhubarb like notes. Rich, supplely textured dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours expand across the palate with a peacock’s tail like power wave. Spicy cedar, rhubarb, forest floor, delicate infusions of dried herbs and bramble are spread across the back half. Seamlessly integrated, velvet smooth tannins and fresh underlying acidity. Finishes super seductive and very long.

What a beguiling wine – only the second release and showing complexity far beyond its years. It’s certainly youthful and pretty with heady aromas of florals and autumn leaves with flavours of wild strawberries, dark cherries and pips, chinotto, Middle Eastern spices and some poached rhubarb, too. The medium-bodied palate is evenly poised, laden with filigree tannins (lots of them) and energising acidity; oak (25% new) completely integrated. This has depth, some grip, a little amaro bitterness on the finish and, of utmost importance, it will age but it’s oh-so pleasing to drink today. Drink by 2036.

The 2024 Balnarring Pinot Noir is perfumed and fragrant and quite different in character compared to the 2023 tasted alongside. Where the former was powerful, structural and condensed, this is floral, perfumed and fresh. I love the way this wine performs. There is levity here and minerality too. The tannins are structural and chalky through the long finish. This is very good. It doesn't break stride at any point. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

A gorgeously rounded Pinot Grigio with a long juicy finish.
In Alto Adige Pinot Grigio ranks as one of the most important varieties and altitude is king. Erste + Neue’s Pinot Grigio comes from some of their highest sites ranging in altitudes up to 800 metres that have an array of different soil types. Picked in late September to retain acidity and freshness, post fermentation the pressed juice spends about 6 months in 110-hectolitre neutral oak and is left on gross less to provide additional texture and palate weight.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Delightful pear and red apple skin aromas mix with faint whiffs of honeysuckle, quince and wet stone. Generous pear, red apple and spicy quince fruits impress with their intensity and textural shape. Delicate honeysuckle and stony mineral elements lie underneath. Fresh acidity with a long juicy finish that’s gorgeously rounded.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec with the Cabernet component coming predominately from blocks planted in 1975. Ageing took place in a combination of French oak barrels (20% new) and a 3000 litre Foudre for a period of 12 months.

Captivatingly rich and concentrated yet refined, this is a superb Mount Barker Cabernet from the outstanding 2023 vintage.

Dense pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Delightful red to black currant, red liquorice and mulberry aromas sail through the nostrils complimented by some cedary tobacco, dusty earth, subtle spicy black olive and bay leaf notes. Rich and intensely flavoured yet gorgeously refined, the mid weighted palate is layered with red to black currant and mulberry fruits. Lending further complexity are seamlessly integrated spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco, subtle black olive and bay leaf accents. Slightly dusty but very fine grained tannins concluding long and concentrated yet elegant.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

There is 3% malbec in this wine. A variety of blocks are utilised for the cabernet component. Sleek and elegant, really understated and refined. A sheath of lightweight but puckering, al dente tannin keeping in dark cherry, cassis, alpine herb notes, clove, white pepper and tobacco. The wine does two speeds of fruit friendly and fresh while being earthy, herbal and savoury at the same time. Excellent length, tightly wound and just so darn superb overall. How is this this price?! Ludicrous. Drink by 2035.
