We were enamored with Arran's early efforts which were defined by pristinely clean, sweet, unpeated malt. Like many others, Arran has diversified its portfolio since its inception, now offering a range of wood finishes, cask strength bottlings and even a peated whisky (it seems every distillery has to have at least one nowadays!) Their latest collection to land in Australia places Arran along side the likes of Springbank and Bruichladdich for sheer innovation and breadth.
"Machrie Moor" is a reference to an area of Arran island strewn with Bronze Age stone circles and standing stones. This is lightly peated at 20ppm, and is a regular 'limited release'.
Tasting note: Pale Straw gold appearance. Opens relatively muted, only gradually releasing notes of choc-chip cookie followed by hints of Fisherman’s friend and dried kelp after several minutes exposure. What an unusual palate - think quality Japanese green tea with some sweet spices thrown in! The peaty malt adds depth towards the finish. Concludes bone dry with a subtle though lengthy Fisherman’s Friend fade. Weird and wonderful but so far as this goes, peated malt doesn't showcase Arran’s finest points. 46% Alc/Vol.
