Mezcal Rey Campero (meaning the “King of the Countryside” in Spanish) offer a range of artisanal spirits crafted by the Sánchez family in Candelaria Yegolé. Following four generations of tradition since 1890, nowadays they specialize in single-agave mezcals, including varieties like Espadín, Cuishe, Tepeztate, and Jabalí, among others, all produced via traditional earth oven cooking and copper stills.

Their range showcases the diverse aromas and flavours of both wild and cultivated agaves. One of the rarer of these is Tepeztate. The variety can take up to 25-35 years to mature, growing on steep gradients in rocky soil, sometimes hanging horizontally from mountain cliffs. Needless to say, extracting the plants is difficult, even dangerous work. No surprise then that these mezcals don't come cheap. You'll often pay double what an Espadin might cost. Tepeztate styles offer distinct aromas and flavours. According to mezcalreviews.com, "...a good Tepextate tastes like the perfect mix of freshly cut sweet and spicy peppers, intensely vegetal and earthy but not overpowering." Rey Campero's is harvested from 15-18 year old plants. Expect some variation between batches.

Other reviews... This delicious tepextate from Rey Campero is very vegetal on the nose with minimal spice that doesn’t take hold until you sip. The flavors are earthy, cinnamon, and jalapeno with undertones of caramel. This batch is 49% ABV so expect a bite if your palate isn’t warmed up. - mezcalreviews.com

...On the nose ot smells delicious and earthy with notes of spice, chili, plantz, trees, more spice and peppers. On the palate its super smooth and delicious. - distiller.com
