Black Tot Historic Solera Caribbean Rum (700ml)

Elixir Distillers have been back at the blending table working on the latest addition to the Black Tot range. Named 'Historic Solera' and composed of rums aged in both tropical and European environments, the mix includes 40% 3-5 Year Old Guyana Pot/Column distilled rums, 35% 5 Year Old Barbados Pot/Column still blended rum, 20% Unaged Guyana Pot/Column blended rum and 5% 3 Year Old Jamaica High Ester Pot Still rum. Maturation took place in ex-bourbon barrels, seasoned with Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherries followed by further ageing in a traditional three-tier Solera process. They claim it gives the product a depth and consistency that cannot be replicated using seasoned casks or a vatting alone. The final rum was bottled non-chill filtered with no added sugar. This is set to remain part of Black Tot's core range, as the Solera system casks are never fully emptied, meaning the remaining rum continually ages and promises more depth and nuance as younger liquid is added to the increasingly aged stock. 46.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The combination of proper Oloroso, esters and old oak gives this a decidely sour and slightly winey edge along with the dark fruits. Overall it leans firmly towards the sherry, creating a brandy-like style that could disappoint die-hard rum lovers, in my opinion. ...From the Chicago Rum festival, this was a highlight I was looking for early. Some folks were on the fence about this one but I enjoyed the sample a lot. This is not Masters Reserve standards but not far off. a much elevated Caribbean's finest offering. The blend and resulting flavors work well for me but what really makes a difference is the Sherry finish. Not too sweet, not too dry - just perfect. This feels like a cold Friday night by a warm fire pour - multiple pours. I'm a fan and not an outrageous price. - rumratings.com
