Ardnamurchan AD/ Heritage Barley Release Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
'Heritage Barley' will no doubt be one of the more sought-after bottlings in Ardnamurchan's latest outturn, distinguished by its use of 100% unpeated Golden Promise barley, a variety traditionally prized for its rich, nutty flavour. One of its greatest exponents was Macallan, but notoriously low yields mean it's now rarely used (they reduced the original ratio of Golden Promise in 1993. Subsequent bottlings have never been the same). Glengoyne remains a notable standout. Ardnamurchan's expression should see the character of the grain well-expressed, with maturation limited to ex-American bourbon barrels filled in 2018. 59.2% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Freshly opened milk chocolate digestive biscuits. Glacé cherries, lime cordial, a soft dusting of icing sugar on marzipan, apricot jam. Melted butter with acacia honey on sourdough toast. Salted preserved lemons. A whiff of long grass. Palate: Chewable, oily mouthfeel. The marzipan theme continues, with sugared almonds. More nuts:salted cashews and subtle pistachios. A gentle, creamy sweetness. Rich orange polenta cake. Baked cooking apples with fizzy lemonade. Peshwari naan filling. Finish: Oily, luscious and well-balanced. Medium length.Traces of soft orchard fruit, a sweet nuttiness and the last sip of espresso.
