2024 Domaine Schoffit Chasselas Vieilles Vignes
A luscious, slippery textured Chasselas with a long, dry finish.
In the 1960’s, Robert Schoffit was part of the group of people who fought to retain Chasselas in the Alsace grape register. Old Chasselas vines were planted in 1939 and between 1942 and 1954 were a specialty of the estate. This is from a small, 0.9 ha parcel of Chasselas planted in 1940 on alluvial soils of gravel in Colmar. Entirely hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. The old age of the vines gives density and complexity to this dry Chasselas.
Brilliant pale straw colour with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Exotic rosewater, lychee and ripe pear scents show impressive intensity followed by some honeysuckle, quince and ginger spice notes. Luscious lychee, red apple and pear fruits are counterpointed by an underlying brisk acidity which brings a gentle zing to the otherwise slippery textural feel. Delicate honeysuckle and ginger spice characters sit in the background. Long and dry with a lick of ginger spice lingering across the finish.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
