2024 Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes

Rich, powerful and succulent with a chewy mouth feel.

Domaine Saint-Damien is run by Joel and Amie Saurel whose family has been tending vineyards for four generations, dating back to 1821. Until relatively recently they sold all of their grapes to negociants. In 1998 they brought on consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie and haven’t looked back. Of the estates 42 acres of vineyards, 30 acres are in Gigondas with vines that have an average age of 50 years.
A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah matured in large old foudres for a period of 12 months. Deep black dark red colour with a youthful looking dark red hue. Intense black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry scents leap out of the glass trailed by some scorched earth, provincial herb and peppered incense like notes. Rich, concentrated and succulent, the full bodied palate is engulfed with black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are framed by a firm, sturdy tannin structure. Ripe, chewy mouth feel with notions dried herbs, scorched earth, infusions of incense and pepper scored across the back half. Showing immense power it finishes long and juicy yet robust.

Also 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre but from clay and limestone soils, the 2024 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a classic Gigondas with its spicy red and black fruits, chalky minerality, pepper, and obvious garrigue-like nuances on the nose. Aged 12 months in 50-hectoliter foudre, it's medium-bodied on the palate and has soft, supple tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. Drink this classy, complex effort over the coming decade or so. Drink 2026-2036.
