Established in 2000 by Jim and Daisy Chatto, Chatto Wines is dedicated exclusively to Pinot Noir. With over two decades of experience and numerous accolades—including Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Winemaker of the Year—Jim Chatto crafts small-batch, site-expressive wines. The home vineyard in the Huon Valley is planted to eight Pinot clones, producing elegant, intensely flavoured wines in tiny quantities. The 2024 vintage followed Tasmania’s driest summer on record, delivering clean, concentrated fruit. These are structured, expressive Pinots with immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.

The Franklinii Pinot Noir is a seamless blend of two Huon Valley sites, capturing the region’s signature elegance and poise. Dark red core with black toned edges and a bright purple red tinged hue. Streaming through the nostrils are alluring scents of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and whiffs of anise. Forest floor, fresh herb and spice notes ensue. Delicious red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits power across the enticing palate with notions of anise, forest floor, infusions of fresh herbs and delicate spicy cedar extending across the back half. Energetic and juicy it has polished, fine grained tannins and a long, fresh, deeply fruited finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Other Reviews....
The 2024 Franklinii Pinot Noir is a regional wine from the Huon Valley in Tasmania. The fruit is from two vineyards: Elsewhere Vineyard and Frankcomb (the first vintage featured fruit just from this vineyard). As it happens, the Franklinii name is the scientific name of the Huon pine, endemic to this area. They're magical trees and ancient too. This Pinot is eminently darker-fruited than the Yarraensis tasted alongside. Here, this is spicy and capacious, with exotic spices and dark fruit, with an airiness to the tannins that carries the flavor through the long finish. It's excellent. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.
