Comprised of vineyards, cattle pastures and native bush, the Thousand Candles estate stretches over 1100 acres making it one of the biggest land holdings in the Yarra Valley. The vineyard was planted in 1995 and is just over 60 acres in size with a focus on Pinot Noir. Stuart Proud is in charge of the winemaking.
The fruit for this wine was hand picked from select parcels of the estate’s best blocks which have an easterly aspect allowing the vines to avoid the harsh afternoon sun. Fermented in small batches over two weeks with minimal intervention the wine was then matured for 6 months in older French oak barriques and hogsheads.
Semi translucent bright red to dark red colour with a light red hue. Perfumed scents of violets, dark cherries, strawberries, anise and dried clove sail through the nostrils with some subtle rhubarb, forest floor and spice notes also evident. Delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours carry a fresh supple feel with notions of clove, forest floor and spice lying underneath. Frisky acidity and polished tannins concluding savoury and elegant.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 12.5%

Other Reviews......
All MV6 clone and 10–30% whole bunches. A light, bright ruby red. Another delicate yet well-defined pinot from Stuart and the team at Thousand Candles. Aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries and fresh rose petals Light to medium bodied and gently sinewy on the palate, finishing with silky, persistent tannins. This is delicious now but will be even better 2–3 years from now. Just as good and just as well priced as the very good '21. Drink by 2028.
