Founded in Vouvray in 1923, Domaine du Clos Naudin produces some of the most celebrated and remarkably long-lived Chenin Blancs in the Loire Valley. Run today by Vincent Foreau alongside longtime cellar master Hubert Vacher, the estate spans just 11.5 hectares, with three-quarters of its holdings positioned on the prized Première Côte in vineyards like Les Perruches. Long a quiet staple on the wine lists of France's top restaurants, the estate practices minimal-input viticulture, fermenting with natural yeasts in mostly aged 300-liter barrels with roughly 5% new oak. Blocking malolactic fermentation entirely, Foreau crafts dry, demi-sec, sweet, and sparkling cuvées defined by crystalline purity, chalky precision, and extraordinary ageability.

Off-dry Chenin is central to the identity of Vouvray, and Foreau's Demi-Sec stands as a masterclass in the style. Carrying 21 grams of residual sugar, the 2022 achieves its effortless balance through blocked malolactic fermentation, keeping the mouthfeel precise and vibrant despite the warmth of the vintage. When there are a lot of Vouvray producers moving towards fully dry styles, this demi-sec reminds you why Vouvray shouldn't abandon its off-dry expressions. As usual, the Foreaus nail the balance, striking that point between residual sugar, acidity and phenolics. The fruit is pure and finely handled, blossoming in the mouth while retaining restraint. It's not all on show upfront and it makes you want to go back and see what else is there: honey, nectarine, pineapple and lees-derived pastry. Drink 2024-2037.
