2021 Tarrawarra Estate South Block Chardonnay
With close to 40 years of history TarraWarra has some of the Yarra Valley’s oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. 2021 was a textbook Yarra Valley vintage, the spring weather was even, with rainfall at the right intervals for flowering resulting in excellent fruit set. The growing season from December through to February provided excellent ripening weather and virtually no days over 40 degrees. As a result, sugar and flavour development occurred slowly and simultaneously. The yields were of an average size and quality excellent.
The South Block was planted in 2022 using the Mendoza clone with the vine material sourced from Leeuwin Estate. The juice was wild fermented with maturation taking place in French oak puncheons and barriques of which 10% were new.
Rich, round and powerful this is a superb Yarra Valley Chardonnay from the outstanding 2021 vintage.
Brilliant pale straw in colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Leaping out of the glass and completely engulfing the nostrils are intense white peach, cashew and dried honey aromas which are complimented by hints of crème brulee, nougat and spice. Rich and mouth filling the palate is awash white peach, dried honey and creme brulee flavours which impart a creamy texture. Cashew, biscuity nougat characters and spice form the back drop. Full, round and powerful with nicely integrated acidity it finishes exceptionally long, textured and very moreish.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
