2021 Nicks Secret JH FUT McLaren Vale Shiraz

From a small but highly regarded McLaren Vale estate, this is the 30th release of this wine which was first made in 1984. Sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1910, these 100 plus year old vines have delivered a rich, full bodied style of Shiraz that has an opulent feel. Maturation took place in seasoned French and American oak barrels for over 18 months.

Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are intoxicating scents of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate which are intertwined with vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, concentrated and opulently textured, the plump, amply weighted palate is flush with ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Detailed across the back half are spicy vanillin oak and earthy mocha characters. Velvet smooth tannins with a long, seductive finish.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Other Reviews….
This only saw seasoned American oak, with all barrels about eight years old. Although ‘traditional’ in feel, this is purposely picked early enough to keep spice in the frame. There’s an agreeable level of energy, a red-fruited drive to the blue and black fruit notes, with cassia, anise, clove and a ferrous, earthy quality. Sour cherries, ripe redcurrant, tart brambly berries, crème de myrtille, licorice and coal dust, a hint of caramel. It’s a fine bottle, and a neat marriage of tradition and evolution. Drink by 2032.
