The 1970s planting on Balgownie Estate. Josh Cooper is a dyed in the wool Claret lover and is exploring his blazer-with-elbow-patch persona at pace. Stay tuned for even more cabernets (and very good ones at that). We were lucky enough to share some time together a few weeks ago with a mob of Macedon winemakers at the fantastic Bar Merenda, and Josh brought with him a collection of Balgownie cabernets back to the early 1980s – superb, vibrant, beautiful wines we drank with gusto. This is fantastic. So inky and dense but lifted so brightly on fine, minerally tannins, light dusting of pepper, frisky inclusion of dried, brambly herbs. That mesh of concentrated, dark berry and black olive fruit with those humming, succulent tannins is just unreal. This is superb. A feast. Drink 2022 - 2030+

I thought this was the best of the JC wines recently reviewed.
Blackberry, spice, some black pepper, a little cedar. Rich and ferrous, wonderful spread of dense tannin, so earthy, and yet light too, yet deep, quietly saline, with tannin to close. Bitter dark chocolate.

Notes from producer....
Though bottled earlier the Balgownie Vineyard Pressings wine is fully intended to age as long as you can wait. Produced in the great tradition of Wendouree and many of the pioneering Central Victorian Cabernet Sauvignon producers a portion of press wine was left out of the final blend and matured separately. As extraction for all the wines as always remains relatively light it offers no better or worse quality than the final blend but simply a firmer, denser, darker expression offering incredible complexity with violet, cedar, graphite and sweet cassis and importantly a mass of power, but without weight. The definition of aromas and flavours in the wines produced from Balgownie is something truly special. A wine that can be enjoyed now with plenty of air, or that will wonderfully suit long cellaring as the pedigree of the site attests to.
