2021 Hahndorf Hill Gru Gruner Veltliner
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Leaping from the glass are intense pear, peach and green apple scents closely followed by hints of lime, wet stone and fresh herbs. Tantalising pear and red apple fruits are layered across what is an expressively textured palate with notions of wet stone, quince and subtle spice in the background. Finishes dry with brisk acidity and a long aftertaste that shows plenty of flesh.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
Has more weight and gravitas than its siblings, but the same balance and length: it's a crying shame that I don't methodically lay down the Hahndorf Hill grüners for a decade or so to watch their development, giving the same reward as fine rieslings. Drink by 2030.
