Sourced from a single vineyard this wine was created as a tribute to Ben Schild who began the family’s long association with winemaking and viticulture. The wine was fermented in open fermenters before being matured in a combination of new and old French, American and Hungarian oak for 18 months and then underwent a further 24 months maturation in bottle prior to release.
Impenetrable inky black in colour with a very deep black dark red hue. Leaping out of the glass are ripe dark plum and liquorice aromas which are followed by blackberry, subtlety toasted vanillin oak, fennel, graphite and blackpepper. Rich and concentrated, lavish blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits abound across the full bodied palate. Lying underneath are subtle smoky vanillin cedar, earthy graphite and blackpepper elements. Nicely balanced it has a plush mouthfeel and velvet smooth tannins that nonetheless show ample structure. Concludes long and polished with a lingering blackpepper character.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
