2016 Elderton Barossa Shiraz
The outstanding 2016 vintage has produced a Shiraz with more size and richness than recent vintages. Combine this with the estates trademark suppleness and you have on your hands one of the best Elderton Shiraz made in a long time. Fruit is sourced from the Barossa sub districts of Nuriootpa (53%), Greenock (26%) and Craneford (21%) with vines aged between 23 and 122 years old. Maturation took place in predominately second and third fill American oak puncheons for 24 months.
A ripping Barossa Shiraz from Elderton that soothes the palate with its voluptuous ripe fruit.
Sitting in the glass the wine displays great colour with a pitch black core and a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Sailing through the olfactory senses are pronounced aromatics of ripe dark plum, liquorice and blackberry followed by subtlety toasted vanillin oak and dark chocolate with a pinch of spicy pepper as an end note. Flooding the rich, full bodied palate are waves of velvety textured dark plum, liquorice and juicy blackberry flavours with an underpinning of toasty vanillin oak, traces of dark chocolate and spice. Very polished, silky smooth tannins integrate beautifully with the rich dark fruit. Excellent power with a long spicy dark plum, liquorice, blackberry, toasty vanillin oak, subtle dark chocolate and light pepper aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
