2011 Douglas Laing & Co. Old Particular Single Cask Braeval 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
It could be argued that some of Scotland's distilleries produce spirit that's best reserved for blends, and not particularly suited to showcasing as single malts. But then there are others that do produce large amounts of "blend filler" that can also deliver noteworthy malts. Little-known Braevel is one, offering a whisky that can be both rewarding and surprisingly complex. The first official release only debuted in 2017, so it remains novel, even for seasoned drinkers. Independents continue to seek it out. This expressions consists of 395 bottles from a refill hogshead. 48.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Opens replete with rich, sweet home-baking - develops to warm damp sugar and mocha. Palate: Big and tannic with citrus, spices, the juiciest of barley, lightly burnt cake and late Bourbon. Finish: The citrus has been flamed and sugar added creme brulee style with a cereal backdrop.
