The 1996 Wynns Collection are of exceptional quality and the John Riddoch is a great International wine, and possibly a new benchmark for Coonawarra. This is certainly a wine that the entire Wine Industry can be justly proud of, and it's sure to be a big worry to the Bordeaux wine trade. If Australia can maintain this standard of winemaking, then the export future will be one of golden bliss for years to come.Opaque - the deepest of crimsons in colour with mauve purple edges - signalling a wine of profound fruit flavour. The nose is superb, filled with violets, blackcurrants, dark chocolate, spice and a hint of liquorice. The palate displays outstanding concentration of flavour, clearly Cabernet, and yet with a finesse that elevates it well above the Wynns Black Label Cabernet and into an International super class. Superfine flavours of blackcurrant and spice. Perfect balance, fine grained tannins, almost velvet like, with exceptionally long blackcurrant spice and liquorice aftertaste, followed by lingering fine dry tannins. An exceptional wine. Cellar 15-20 years.
