Thirty to forty-year-old 'Burgies might set you back thousands of dollars, so consider this a relative bargain. The Pernod Ricard distillery remains a critical component in the mega-conglomerate Ballantine’s blend. Unfortunately very, very little gets released under the Glenburgie label, so it's not a name widely recognised here or overseas. Like more famous Speysiders such as Glen Grant or Glenlivet, it has a reputation for long ageing. Lady of the Glen somehow procured this 27-year-old expression and a handful of bottles have reached our shores. After nearly three decades in a refill hogshead, the alcohol remains considerable, so it's no surprise that the nose is a little spirity at first. Five minutes in the glass rewards your patience with beefy, malty notes infused with orange spice cake, sandalwood and beeswax. That's reflected in a deep, brooding dram boasting flavours sweet oak, cream sponge cake, light beeswax and rancio punctuated by lively spices. Lashings of fruit'n'nut chocolate and vanillan oak finish off a fabulously 'malty' malt of serious depth. 58.4 % Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 218 bottles. Collectable.

Notes from the bottlers... Founded in 1810 and recognised for a light fruity distillate and its manual production process. Matured entirely in a refill hogshead for 27 years for a mellow character and honey with marzipan. This magnificent well aged Speysider needs no great explanation. This classic example of the make offers amazing tropical fruit sweetness and just the right balance of oak and spice. Also a wonderful ABV for its age. The tasting revealed, ripe pineapple, honey and toasted coconut.
