This 'profoundly peated' dram was made to replicate the style at the time of Charles Campbell and was matured in a mixture of cask types before being finished in oloroso sherry casks. The whisky is non-chill filtered however purists will be disappointed to learn that caramel colour has been added.
Tasting note: Bright gold colour. There’s a surprising amount of floating sediment that comes with this whisky. Sweet and smokey aromatics (bacon fat / smoked trout) have an industrial edge (engine grease); there’s a foundation of lovely, clean sweet cereals beneath it all. Entry is light and slightly waxy, deceptively so, given the enormous peppery wave that follows. Flavours are off-dry with the peat taking on an ashy, kippery slant that doesn’t leave room for much else to show. Good length, but the oak influence at mid palate is too much, finishing very dry, tannic and cigar box like. A spiciness persists right through to the finale, accompanied by a mild lanolin, cigar box fade. A good food whisky in this genre? Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose of smoked fish, brine and butter. Textured and mouth-coating, with flavours of luscious fruit, peat smoke, spice and liquorice sticks. The addition of water sweetens the whole effect. Peat lingers in the spicy finish, which becomes drier and more ashy. 46.0% Alc/Vol.
