Glendronach debuted with a smokey whisky back in 2015. This latest bottling is inspired by the transportation of casked Port into Scotland during the 19th century. The barley was dried in the ‘old style’, using Highland peat, followed by a final maturation in Port pipes from the Douro Valley in Portugal.
Rachel Barrie, whisky maker at The Glendronach, adds: “This may be considered a surprising expression from this distillery but it's in keeping with historical styles. Peat imbues the spirit with regional notes of wood smoke and smoldering charcoal, layered over The GlenDronach’s archetypal fruitiness.” Like most of the core range, it comes bottled at 46% ABV and is non-chill-filtered.

Other reviews… This is non-chill filtered and carries no age statement. The nose is earthy, with damp herbaceous borders, quite acrid smoke, and spicy cranberries. Fresh, juicy red berries on the palate, with background peat smoke becoming ashy, with rich red wine notes. The red wine persists in the finish, accompanied by prickly black pepper. 89 points Reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Spring 2018) – www.maltadvocate.com
