Edward Bramley Kain and Penelope Gage started in the kitchen of their South Devon fruit farm with strawberry, raspberry and blackcurrant liqueurs following a 'maceration' method traditional in France. It was a great opportunity to experiment and with the abundance of sloes in the hedges it wasn't long before Bramley's Sloe Gin made it onto the shelves of local stores. After 10 years of farming soft fruit and making fruit liqueurs, Edward and Penelope sold the farm and moved into a dedicated building with a small bottling line and larger scale facilities.

Now 20 years on son Michael and daughter Felicity run the business, still making the liqueurs in exactly the same way - in small batches giving the freshest flavours possible.

6 O'Clock gin is Bramley and Gage’s latest venture. Inspired by his forefather, Edward Kain (known for restraint in gin consumption but who always looked forward to a 6 'O Clock tipple), Michael Kain carefully selects and balances Juniper with six other botanicals. Orange Peel adds a citrus in delightful harmony with floral Elderflower. The company has a ‘ginspirational’ sideline in the form of a tonic is made with natural quinine (not synthetic) and containing no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a silvery blush. Baked citrus and tumeric. A hint of thyme then the juniper comes to the fore with citrus peel adding freshness. The palate unfolds slowly. Soft and light at first, building with exceptional length towards a concentrated juniper / dried herb surge that reverberates in the mouth. Warming, peppery mouthfeel. Concludes long, dry and warming with juniper, dried herb, peppermint and spice aftertaste showing excellent persistence. An auspicious new release. 43% Alc./ Vol.

Other reviews... Delightful variation on a theme. The traditional characters are there but some fresh citrus and lovely notes of elderflower. Amazingly powerful in the mouth with great depth of flavour. Super and full floral backing. Fresh yet soothing. Full flavoured but beautifully balanced. Long and full flavoured finish where the floral notes are strongly evident.
