Primitivo is what the Italians call the variety Zinfandel, which is revered in the Napa Valley in California. After initially trialling the UC Davis clone of Zinfandel for a few years, that produced a generous and interesting wine, but somehow just missed the mark, Massena sought Primitivo cuttings from the Puglia region of Italy and planted them on the gentle south slope of their 'Dadds' vineyard, which has yielded an excellent example of this intriguing varietal. In previous years the Primitivo has gone to seasoned smaller barrels, but this vintage the entire single vineyard parcel has been matured in a 3000 litre foudre.

Outstanding colour saturation displaying an inky black core with deep dark crimson black hue. On the nose very ripe black cherry and black plum scents are to the fore followed by some dried fruit characters, liquorice and spice end notes. Rich, luscious black cherry and black plum flavours fill the mouth alongside some liquorice, dried fruit, subtle earth and spice. Opulently textured with velvet smooth tannins. Excellent length with long ripe joosy black cherry, black plum, liquorice and spicy dried fruit characters aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
