Growing Cabernet Sauvignon in a cool climate like Gippsland is a precarious occupation. The varietal is prone to exhibit vegetal / green bean aroma and flavour when the grapes are not fully ripened. These characteristics, coupled with the more aggressive tannin structure natural to Cabernet, only become accentuated with time in the bottle making for a difficult drinking experience. On the other hand, when Cabernet is cropped at low levels and allowed to fully ripen, the fruit flavours that result are often astonishing.

The Narkoojee vineyard was established in 1980 by Harry Friend on the family dairy farm. The vines are planted on deep alluvial soils with mixtures of clay, silt, sand and ironstone gravels. The climate is cool, requiring the vines to be trained on the Lyre Trellis system which increases the exposure of the vines to sunlight and air.

An excellent example of Cabernet.

Very deep almost opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Perfumed nose of cassis and violets displaying good lift followed by a cigar box end note. Mouthfilling palate showing classic Cabernet characters – flavours of blackcurrant, cedar and cinnamon. Fine grained tannins, properly balanced. Aftertaste of blackcurrant and cigar box.
