Chateau Malagar is quite a discovery for us, however, it enjoys considerable fame in France.  Historically the vineyard is important as it was the home of renowned French Author Jean Muriac.

The vineyard is located in the Commune of Saint Maxant in the Premier Cotes de Bordeaux, 3km west of Langor.  The vineyard itself is relatively small by Australian standards, consisting of 4 hectares of red and 7 hectares of white wine planted with 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc.  The average age of the vines is 25 years. As with all botrytis affected wines the picking takes place by hand with 2 to 4 tries (picking dates), based on degree of ripeness of the grapes.  Vinification is in barrel, with the wines being subsequently matured in barrel for a further 24 months.

This wine represents remarkable value.

Brilliant gold colour with gold straw hue. Top notes of apricot, followed by nuances of lemon, butter and spice finishing with a cinnamon end note. Luscious mouthfeel with flavours of spice, lemon butter and tinned apricot. Excellent palate weight and length. There is a touch of caramel emerging on the back palate. Very long aftertaste of tinned apricots and honey, with the spiciness lingering for some time.
