Krug's 2000 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil keeps getting better and better. The flavors are starting to develop lovely layers of complexity, while the wine is also fleshing out a bit, releasing gorgeous layers of texture. Lemon oil, jasmine, white flowers, almonds and spices wrap around the deep, resonant finish in a striking Clos du Mesnil with a bright, bright future. This was bottle N. 6617.

I have had the opportunity to try this vintage 3 times since it was released and while two bottles showed superbly the third seemed a bit tired and lacking the stunning depth of the other two. However the two good examples were outstanding with some secondary character to the yeasty aromas of brioche and citrus peel. There is an ultra-clean and sophisticated mouth feel to the middle weight flavors that are supported by an ultra-fine mousse, all wrapped in a notably dry but not really austere finish that possesses excellent lift that contributes to that beguiling feeling of being impatient for the next sip. While this will easily hold for years for my taste this has arrived on the front edge of its peak drinkability.
