Dufftown Distillery was founded on Speyside in 1896, the sixth distillery to be constructed there, and still draws its water from the same spring. The distillery was bought by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd in 1933, along with Blair Athol, as part of the acquisition of Peter Mackenzie & Co Distillers Ltd. Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd were subsequently purchased by Guinness plc in 1985. It is now part of the Diageo group.

The whisky is matured mainly in ex Bourbon refills with a small amount in ex Sherry refills. The house style has been described as medium bodied, malty, nutty and cereal like. Historically, this is very rarely seen, even under independent labels. This bottling from Gordon & MacPhail was distilled in 1999.

Even so, a workmanlike rather than spectacular malt, though the surprising tang of gooseberry amid the barley is more than attractive. 85.5 points 43% Alc./Vol. - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2013size>
