Lindsay McCall is producing a consistent run of impressive wines. Shiraz on the Mornington Peninsula is a tricky grape and needs a warm site which he has. The 1998 is lighter than the gigantic 1997, however, it displays strong cool climate white pepper, spice, cherry and freshly crushed blackberry aromas. The palate is relatively short and without the complexity or concentration that one comes to expect from McCall, however, having said that it is still a very acceptable wine. On the palate stewed fruit and cherry flavours are interspersed with some liquorice allsorts and white pepper. Excellent balance, followed by some dry dusty tannins and soft acid finish. Cellar 3-5 years.
