SECOND TASTING 16/12/2002
A variety of wines made with respect to the land and tradition with correct technique in the vineyard as well as in the winery, so that the final product on the table of the enthusiast can always create happy moments and delightful encounters. The commitment of the late Renato Ratti in this field was profound, complex and exemplary. Technician, Researcher, historian, writer, humorist and defender: he contributed a great deal to the wines of the Langhe, above all in terms of innovative evolution. If wine is culture, Renato Ratti was among the first to understand, so his efforts left an indelible mark in this field. His example has been handed down to his nephew Massimo Martinelli, who has been working with the firm since its beginning and to his son Pietro, a young oenologist who certainly has a promising future. Ratti's Barolos have long been a model for the elegant graceful, rich, supple style of Barolo that can be drunk when released. While a handful of critics suggest that these wines must be drunk early, current tastings of 1978 Barolo has proven to be marvellous. The secrets are few: passion, sensitivity, humanity, humility, patience, wisdom and experience are the values that are important in making Renato Ratti wines great wines.

Made from 100% Nebbiolo, from the vineyards called Ochetti in Monteu Roero in the region of Piemonte. Fermentation takes place over 10 days at a controlled temperature during which time the must is pumped over the skins twice a day. Malolactic fermentation takes place before ageing of a year in French oak. The wine is bottled with no fining or filtration.

Try With: Roast Pigeon, Truffles and Polenta.

TASTING NOTE : Bright brick red colour with tawny hue. Medium body. Aroma of earth and spice followed by a subtle chocolate end note. The palate flavours are more lively than the colour would suggest with subtle strawberry flavour emerging, over a truffle background. Excellent balance, fine dry grained tannins which persist onto to the aftertaste.

FIRST TASTING 6/11/2001
This wine has been made from 100% Nebbiolo, from around Alba in Piemonte. Very deep brick red colour with sienna hue. Delightful aroma of spice, confectionary and raisins followed by end notes of old leather and liquorice. On the palate, the flavours of raisins, earth and leather re-emerge over a spice background. The tannins are quite firm and dry, and linger, followed by earthy leather aftertaste. This wine is worth pairing with roast pigeon, truffles and polenta.
