Gippsland produces some very classy Bordeaux blends with the McAlister being the local superstar. The Nicholson River Cabernet Merlot is also worthy of consideration, although not quite as refined as some of the States superstars. The oxidative handling of the Nicholson River Chardonnay is far more successful than the slightly plummy/tobacco leaf Cabernet Merlot.Deep brick red colour with some crimson overtones. Earthy, plum, tobacco leaf, leather and cedar nose which places itself in a odd position - it is neither opulent or elegant nor voluptuous. It sits in a mould of ripe cool climate Cabernet, yet without any great distinguishing attributes - no serious faults either by the way. The palate is relatively tightly knit with the flavour of earth and tobacco leaf dominating. Flavours of stewed fruit and plum with a hint of pencil shavings are in the background. Good weight, fine grained tannins with blackcurrant, spicy plums and earth aftertaste. Cellar 3-5 years.
