This wine is named in honour of Grant Burge's Great Grandfather Meshach Burge. This is a great Australian Shiraz, and winner of the 1997 Montgomery Trophy in Adelaide. Produced from 80 year old vines grown in the Filsell vineyard and matured in new American oak hogsheads for two years with a further two years bottle maturation. A monumental wine with a rare degree of concentration of flavour that lingers for over10 minutes on the aftertaste. Opaque crimson colour with mauve edges - no sign of bottle development. Magnificent nose - the toasted American oak emerges gracefully over a very refined combination of plum, vanilla and confectionary. Superb sniffing. The palate structure is monumental - wonderful concentration of flavour without the slightest hint of being over ripe. Plums, vanilla, toasted oak, confectionary and spice are in perfect harmony and are supported by perfect firm, assertive yet completely balanced tannins. Finally, a hint of blackpepper emerges and carries the ripe plum and vanillin aftertaste into a splendid finish. Grant Burge's best wine and a great Australian Icon. Cellar 8-10 years. Stocks are extremely limited.
