The 2021 Chianti Classico is a model of excellence. Pure, bright and wonderfully vibrant, the 2021 possesses superb energy and exceptional balance. Crushed red/purplish fruit, rose petal, sweet spice and orange zest bristle with tension. This is a rare Chianti Classico I would cellar for a year or two. Superb. Drink 2024-2036.

This take no time, maybe a nano-second, to reveal its varietal personality. That scent: green apple, chamomile, lime, lime zest. It’s lean, clean and pure. That palate: dusty, lime zest spark, gooseberry, lemongrass with a touch of saline-rockpool. It’s a force-full presence, vibrant and tight in brisk acidity. This is so Hunter Valley Semillon. The fact that it is picked early with 11% alc. informs the drinker that this Semillon is in the classic Hunter style, one that is intended for some serious bottle ageing. And while it might have age on its mind, it does deliver right now. Sourced from old vines according to the label – just how old is not said – it does bring that heady mix of purity of quality fruit with no oak injection, combined with a fine-ness of Semillon expression that is quite unique to the Hunter and Australia. Drink 2023-2030.

Samuel’s Collection celebrates the founder of Yalumba, Samuel Smith and showcases the varieties and blends iconic to both the Barossa and Yalumba. This Grenache is sourced from a collection of gnarled old bush vine vineyards planted between 1920 – 1965, each individual parcel of fruit imparting its own individuality and complexity onto the final blend. Maturation took place in older French puncheons and hogsheads for a period of 9 months.

This is a single vineyard, certified organic expression from Radda. The vineyard is located at 500 metres sitting on top of a pure Albarese and Galestro plateau. The Sangiovese is co-fermented with 5% Colorino. Fermentation is spontaneous and the wine is aged for about 16 months in Stokinger barrels. The presence of Colorino provides a much silkier and softer texture, adding more generous fruit to the final wine.
Deep dark red black colour with a brick red hue. Delightful ripe red currant, dark cherry and subtle rose petal scents sail out of the glass complimented by tertiary notes of earth, sweet tobacco, dried herbs, old cedar, hints of new leather and spice. Medium to full in body, the richly flavoured palate delivers a concentrated profile of fleshy dark cherries, blackcurrant, dried herbs, earth, tobacco, old cedar and spicy leather. Rustic feel with firm tannins imparting a chewy almost grippy feel onto the long robust finish.

The vines are east facing and close to the lake, with less afternoon sun (which means it isn't exposed to the extended heat of the afternoon). "There is clay down there which gives the tannins more mobility and animation," says Nick Mills.
The 2020 Emma's Block Mature Vine Pinot Noir leads with dehydrated cranberry, cherry blossom, graphite and dried star anise. The nose is exotic and restrained at once. This is the entree to the palate which is defined absolutely by the tannins that feel very much like they plume in the wine, like a drop of blood in water. These are wines to feel as much as they are to taste, and this is what helps them stand alone in this place. It’s superb, with unbroken form through the long finish—no strays, no rough edges, no breaks. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2035.

Fermentation in open pots with 100% whole berries, matured for nine months in French puncheons and barriques (25% new). A very bright crimson. I gave this a few good swirls, which released an impressive bouquet featuring black cherries, incense and a little underbrush. Fleshy with lovely inner-mouth feel, the palate is rounded out by its svelte, pliant tannins. It's good now but will be even better in the next two to four years. It's great, too, to see the number of delicious under $40 pinots being produced in the Yarra these days. Drink by 2028.

The Estate consists of 33 hectares of vines planted on the prized Coonawarra Terra Rosa soils. Established in 1972, the first vintage in 1975 was greeted with considerable enthusiasm.

It’s no big secret that the prices of Burgundy have skyrocketed in recent years and whilst the wines from Chablis haven’t risen quite as steeply it’s becoming increasingly difficult to even locate sub $50 Petit Chablis. So a $60 Premier Cru Chablis that delivers exceptional quality is indeed a rare find these days.
Francis Boudin is the third-generation vigneron at Chantemerle and the estate firmly falls in the traditional mould - he despises oak. As the story goes, his grandfather was a cooper and with so much exposure to oak during his formative years he banished it from the family cellars opting for concrete and steel alone.
Old vine material is the key to the estate’s success. While many in the region during the 1970's were re-planting vineyards to high-yielding material the Boudins were planting with naturally low-yielding vines. Along with careful vineyard management, an informed but gentle touch in the winery and judicious lees work to bring out flesh and texture, Boudin produces supple wines, that speak of place clearly layered with Chablis' prized minerality.

A gorgeous Premier Cru Chablis that’s drinking superbly and delivers amazing value.

Brilliant pale straw colour with yellow straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Showing plenty of intensity, seductive pear, lime and green to apple scents laced with wet stone, dried honey and oyster shell like notes evolve out of the glass. Possessing a river stone like textural feel, this gorgeous Chablis features rich, mouth filling pear, lime and dried honey flavours that envelope the palate. Lending further interest are wet slate, chalky mineral and oyster shell like characters. Excellent concentration and drive with fresh underlying acidity. Finishes long and pure. Proves there’s still value to be had in Chablis.

Belle Meade Classic Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

The suitably labelled pre-Prohibition brand, 'Belle Meade' is nowadays bottled by Nelson’s Green Brier out of Nashville Tennessee. The original Green Brier distillery was shut down during Prohibition, but Nelson’s great-great-great-grandsons revived the brand in 2013. While the company does distill at their Nashville location, the Belle Meade brand uses sourced whiskies from Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Hence, it's described as “...a proprietary blend of differing mash bills and yeast strains'' and “is a high rye blend of barrels averaging in age from 6-8 years.” It's variously categorised as a Bourbon, or a Tennessee whiskey, depending on your source.

Other reviews... A warm, welcoming nose, with pleasant dunnage warehouse earthiness, toasted oak, maple syrup, cinnamon, blackberries, grape candy, licorice, and an herbal note. A racy palate offers candied citrus, cherry, and apricot, as well as bitter chocolate, caramel, cinnamon spice, and pepper. Light and delicate on the finish, with milk chocolate, almond, orange, and more cinnamon. Delicate, smooth, sweet, and balanced. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

It is perhaps more indispensable in the kitchen than the bar, particularly when it comes to the creation of Austrian sweets, although it has its place in fruit bowls and hot drinks such as warming Jagertee, Punch and Grog.

Rabbit Tale Dareringer Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $144. 99
    Bottle
    $1739.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.5%

Made from a mash bill of 68% corn, 18% wheat and 14% malted barley, this Straight Bourbon takes a leaf out of the Scotch Whisky playbook with a finishing in PX (sweet) sherry casks from Spain’s artisanal Casknolia Cooperage. Initial aging takes place in alligator char level barrels (the heaviest char of them all). Winner of back-to-back Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, plus another Gold at the World Whiskies Awards. 46.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Dareringer is a straight bourbon that is aged in new toasted and charred oak barrels and then finished in Casknolia Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. Batches are relatively small at no more than 15 barrels, however batch numbers are not provided on each bottle. While PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons can be over-the-top, Rabbit Hole manages to deliver a well-balanced experience that’s quite delicious. Dareringer is full of sweet fruit notes, but manages to hold to its bourbon base with flavors of caramel and oak weaving in and out. Moreover, it’s surprisingly full-flavored for the proof which will appeal to a wide audience as it doesn’t taste high proof, but offers a rich character. If you’re a fan of PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons, Dareringer is definitely worth checking out. - breakingbourbon.com

...A potpourri of herbs, dried flowers, licorice, candied lemon peel, baklava, and furniture polish on the nose. It finishes with dark fruit, menthol, licorice, roasted nuts, and plenty of oak. Takes water well. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    ABV: 47%

Leigh and Bree Attwood are the couple behind Backwoods Distilling Co., based just south of Albury in Yackandandah. The venture was inspired not by Scottish single malts or American rye classics, but by tasting Australian whiskies. The brand debuted in August 2020. Heritage Rye forms the basis of this four year old expression, along with a portion of malted barley and wheat. Maturation took place in a 200L ex-Whipper Snapper Corn Whisky Cask that held Bright Brewery Stout for 3-6 months.  47% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose:  Bright fresh cut pine, honey and coffee. Taste: Vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Finish: Long and sticky with a late touch of spice.

Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml) - Batch 10

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such may have some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

This older iteration of Distiller's Select appears to be the precursor to the current Distiller's Select, which is now re-presented with a blue label and, curiously, labelled as Batch 001. Apart from the timber presentation case, the key point of difference in this bottling is its higher ABV - 45.2% as opposed to just 40% on the entry-level Woodford Reserve. It's also a batch release. As of 2019 they were up to batch 037 in the USA, so this is certainly a very early edition in the series and reported to be a mixture of pot still whiskey distilled at Woodford and column still spirits from the Brown-Forman Distillery in Shively, Kentucky. The exact ratio is undisclosed. Collectable.

Other reviews... [April 2017] Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select may not be as relevant as it once was in the marketplace, however it still serves a purpose. Its simple flavor profile offers a way to dive into bourbon without being overwhelmed by worrying about trying to pick out exotic flavor characteristics. Additionally, for those who have since moved on from drinking it neat, it still offers a good base for cocktails due to its straightforward and approachable flavor profile that doesn’t overpower the drink. There’s still a time and place for Distiller’s Select, but it's just not as exciting as it once was. - breakingbourbon.com

Boutique-y have released a series of blended whiskies, some up to fifty years old, each intended to be different from the last. Of significance here is the price-age ratio. Search for 25 year old blended Scotch and you'll find they're usually upwards of AU$500. Admittedly, with this offer, you don't get luxe packaging and it's a 500ml format, but still, the value for money is compelling. You'll want to grab at least one bottle to experience what a properly aged blend tastes like. Number 2 / batch #3 was decanted around early 2017 with an outturn of 1,650 bottles and a rather cryptic label. The bottlers add, "There's no massive sphere here, but the disembodied glove has returned! This time, it looks to have discovered a massive, soft planetoid. It's another one of those metaphors! We're good at them."

Other reviews... The label for this one appears to depict a white glove stroking a hairy space testicle. Hopefully not a visual tasting note. Colour: deep gold. Nose: creamy vanilla, cinnamon swirls, nutmeg, rice pudding, fudge. Not much ‘blendy-ness’ so far, rather just some top quality American oak sweetness, with suggestions of ‘Speyside’ flavour underneath. Mouth: easy, apple peelings, rhubarb and custard boiled sweets, young dessert wines, mint julep, young demerara rums, corn syrup. All more direct and straightforward ‘decent blend’ territory. Some nice vibes of spiced custard and caramel. Finish: medium and on wet grains, metal polish, sunflower oil, Scotch broth soups, pollens and a little camphor. Comments: It’s a trixy one this, starts deceptively ‘malt driven’ then gets more classical blend-y, before finishing up not unlike some of these old 1970s era blends with these slightly metallic touches. Still, at least not a testicle in sight. 78 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Honey, oak, vanilla pod and chocolatey cereal. Palate: Cherry, spiced rum, thick caramel and a hint of earthy pear. Finish: Menthol, freshly baked bread with chocolate spread, orange oil.

The 2022 O’Riada Shiraz is made from fruit picked from the Clonakilla estate and other vineyards in Murrumbateman and Hall. The 2022 season was cool and long, like its predecessor, 2021. On the nose, there are notes of pink musk sticks and rose petals, blood, black cherry, pastrami and iodine. In the mouth, the wine is everything that the nose has promised—vibrant, alive, delicious, exciting and shaped by very fine pumice stone tannins. Gentle dust and brush sway through the finish. What a lovely wine. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

A very delicate, diaphanous and dainty O'Riada in this cooler year. I thought it was a bit too light on my first tasting, but a revisit a day later saw it grow in stature. White peppercorn, musk, lilac, a hint of spiced salumi and redder fruits this vintage, over blue or black. Almost a wine for the Burgundy drinker, to be positive. The chiffon tannins, stretch nicely across the palate. Could use just a bit more mid-palate stuffing, to be critical. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
