Renown as one of Heathcote’s leading growers and viticulturalists, Ian Rathjen also produces small parcels of wine under his own label, Whistling Eagle. Matured in French oak (30% new) for a period of 18 months, the Eagles Blood Shiraz is his ultimate expression of the Cambrian terroir displaying spectacular colour, depth and power.
Pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are potent aromas of liquorice, blackberry and ripe black cherries which are complimented by smoky vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich, concentrated and plush the full bodied palate is laden with opulent liquorice, blackberry and black plum fruits. Vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth accents lie underneath. Power packed, it has velvet smooth tannins and a long sumptuous finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.5%

Other Reviews…..
It brings on the silk and also the refinement. This is neat, crisp and flavoursome at once. Roasted plum and redcurrants, a lick of boysenberry and then a spread of earth and woodsy spice notes. Nothing over the top here; it feels immaculate. Time will bring greater complexity. Drink by 2040.
