Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Jumping out of the glass are aromas of lime and lemon which are followed by some Granny Smith apple, wet steel, chalky talc and mineral notes. The tight and focused palate sees lemon and lime flavours sculpted by steely mineral infused acidity which provides a chiselled feel. Chalky elements linger underneath. Finishes very dry, taut and crisp with a flinty mineral laced aftertaste.

It offers up high refreshment factor with layers of flavour, texture and character. Good energy here, with great varietal and regional character. Geez, this ticks a lot of boxes, including value. The Dumangin whiskies follow in the footsteps of French pioneers like Michel Couvreur - only there's another layer of expertise bought to the table. While Gilles Dumangin clearly has a 'magic touch' when it comes to selecting and maturing world class singles and grains, he isn't just a buyer and bottler. He's an acclaimed winemaker applying his know-how. Whiskies arrive in Champagne to complete their maturation in 228 litre barriques in the cellars at Chigny-les-Roses. The Ratafia finishing gives them a distinctive signature: a subtle yet delicious, creamy, fruity twist unique to Champagne.
Balcones was discovered by Gilles during one of his sales trips. Waco, the town hosting the distillery is subject to an extreme climate. During Gilles’ August visit, the outside temperature was 48°C. As a result, the ageing of whiskies is dramatically sped up compared to cooler climes (five years here is like twelve or fifteen in Scotland). Finished for 21 months in a Ratafia Champenois barrel, batch 023 is a limited run of 265 bottles. 46.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Full mouthfeel with sweet tea, burnt marshmallow, cinnamon candies and marmalade with a very long finish with oak and pepper notes, followed by cardamom and roasted sweet corn.

This is one of the most complete young Potensacs I can recall tasting. Drink 2027-2043.

No 2nd wine of Potensac since 2021, since they pulled out more than 20ha of vines to retain only the most high quality parts of the vineyard.

A classic Graves, it’s medium to full-bodied and has fine tannins, good overall balance, and outstanding length. Based on 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, it should easily be an outstanding wine.

This fantastic entry level Pinot Grigio that delivers on both intensity and texture was produced by the Rocca family who have been producing wines since the late 1800’s. This wine hails from the Veneto region in northeastern Italy, renowned for its picturesque vineyards and a climate that is ideal for producing crisp white wines.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a light greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. The highly attractive nose offers up delightful scents of pear, red apple and honeysuckle followed by a faint whiff of musk with some wet stone notes also evident. Delicious pear and green to red apple fruits glide across the palate with a slippery textural feel. Some lime and stony mineral elements lie underneath. Refreshing acidity finishing dry, long and supple.

Damien Pinon is the third generation of his family to naturally farm Chenin Blanc in the chalky soils of Vernou-sur-Brenne in the appellation of Vouvray. His Tuffo vines are old, creating lush, expressive white wines.
Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear, red apple skin and honeysuckle blossom out of the glass followed by some quince and subtle cinnamon notes. Rich and concentrated, fleshy peach, pear and red apple fruits are complimented by honeysuckle and quince characters. Full and round in the mouth with a luscious textural feel, brisk acidity lends freshness to the long, intensely flavoured finish.

The mild 2021 vintage conditions provided the perfect framework to produce high quality Cabernet Franc. 9% Shiraz was added to the final blend in order to lift the middle palate, and the result is a very classic Cabernet Franc. Aging took place in old French oak barriques and foudres for a period of 14 months.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Lifted red to black currant and mulberry aromas are trailed by cedary tobacco, dried herb, faint earthy black olive and bay leaf notes. A rich chorus of red to black currant and ripe mulberry fruits flow across the mid weighted palate with notions of vanillin cedar, dusty earth, black olive and infusions of bay leaf lending complexity through the back half. Fine grained yet sturdy tannin structure. Concludes long and spicy.

This is 91% cabernet franc and 9% shiraz matured in old French oak barriques and foudres for 14 months. Red fig, black cherry and rhubarb. Pink peppercorn, damson plum and cinnamon. Oak inserts itself with a cocoa nib bitterness and espresso crema. This is a bit of an enigmatic wine with a filigree of fine but weighty tannins and a mix of sour red fruits and exotic spice. A wine with detail and complexity and of superb value. Drink by 2030.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre sourced from the lower terraced parcels of the Plan de Dieu lieu-dit, in the commune of Violès. The Grenache vines are over 70 years old and come from two sites, one planted on red clay and the other on galets (smooth river-worn pebbles). The younger Mourvèdre vines are planted on sandy soil. The wine is fermented for 30 days in concrete vats, then matured for 10 months in a mix of concrete tanks and large old 50 hL oak foudres.
Deep dark red black colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Delightful red to dark raspberry and red liquorice aromas emante from the glass with some scorched earth, wild herb and pepper notes also chiming in. Rich, juicy pepper infused red to dark raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits swamp the mid weighted palate. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and peppered dried meat elements lie underneath. Understated in its power and concentration it shows remarkable freshness. Finishes very long and succulent with an explosion of blackpepper.

The first impression on the nose is of caramelized tree fruit and flint, but this Saint-Aubin is still very young. On the palate all the elements we expect for this appellation are there, from the salty minerality to the restrained lemon and crisp pear fruit. Well-structured with excellent freshness for this warm vintage. Only at the long, stony finish do you feel the oak a bit, but these are early days for a wine made to age. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Clay loams with some granite, from around the Yarra Valley. Mac is a bit off red volcanic soils for his wines. I asked him about vintage 2023, and he offers “I fucking love it. Cool, small yields and wet. But good substance. Slow run to ripeness. And maybe the best vintage to date for us.” To paraphrase. Beautiful floral rosy/violet perfume, leaps out of the glass. Red fruit, red cherry, a good amount of flavour, fine acidity, light soft chew to crushed rock tannin, lively on the finish and long too. What a delight. This wine really delivers the goods. It’s pure Pinot Noir. Drink 2024-2032+

Disgorged in January of 2023, the 2013 Champagne Millésime Brut was the last vintage from the cellar master for Heidsieck prior to Cyril Brun. The 2013 Champagne Millésime Brut is a bright straw yellow color and is based on the crus of Les Mesnil, Avize, Averney, and Aÿ. It’s fresh with aromas of wet stones, fresh quince, and fresh jasmine flowers. It has a chalky and focused texture, with ripeness to balance it out, and a long, graceful finish. At this stage, it feels more forward with 57% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay. A more mineral-tinged expression, it has a lot of charm and the promise of longevity over the coming two decades. It will be interesting to see how the Pinot shows itself over time. 8 grams per liter dosage. Drink 2024-2044

Cirillo is a family-owned winery situated in the Barossa Valley, that oversees and produces wine from the oldest continuously producing Grenache and Semillon vines globally. Ancestor Vine is made with fruit from vineyards planted in 1850 with maturation taking place in seasoned French oak hogsheads followed by maturation in tank for a further 5 years prior to bottling.

This 2017 old vine Grenache 1850 Ancestor Vine is a little shy at first but then shows breathtaking purity of dark cherry and musky plum with some more exotic cinnamon stick and red licorice hints. The 2017 is beautifully textured and weighted, and despite quite serious underlying power, it remains light on its feet. The excellent vibrancy of fruit is on show and slowly builds layer upon layer of savory roasted meat complexity. Strong ironstone adds backbone to a delightfully perfumed finish. It's a world beater with killer length and the best 1850 yet from Cirillo. Drink 2032 – 2045.

A cooler year that Cirillo enthuses makes for a bit of gristle, this is exceptional. Six-years in tank before release, this full-weighted wine riffs on redder fruits, rather than dark. Raspberry bon-bon, red pastille, rose petal, bergamot and a slake of tannins clad in licorice root and tea tree. Yet there is nothing drying about it as it revels with air, growing more pixelated of tannins, fresher and even more aromatic. Wonderful length. Compelling freshness. This will make fine old bones. The vineyard that is the source for this wine was planted in 1848 and endures today. The vines are bush vines, but some of the vines have single stakes here and there to support the old wood. It's a special place. 2017 was cold and wet in the Barossa and high cropping across the region. This was a challenging combination for many producers; however winemaker Marco Cirillo openly prefers these vintages, and that can only be down to the fact that these old vines are largely self regulating with their yields and growth. So, this 2017 Ancestor Vines 1850 Grenache flows in the mouth with red berries, finely crushed rocks for tannins, tobacco and pepper berry, pastrami, pink peppercorns, raspberry seed and caper brine. It has a lovely flavor arc in the mouth, supple. It is clear, pure, sensational. I love the tannins. It's sapid and palate staining but so light! The wine was matured in a combination of tank and barrel. (Twenty percent of the wine was matured in old wood for just seven months). It then spent five years in tank prior to bottling. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 – 2037.

Azienda Agricola COS was founded in 1980 in the town of Vittoria, located in the southeast of Sicily. Championing indigenous grape varietals since their inception, today they are one of the finest producers on the island. Rami is a skin-contact white blend of %50 Grecanico & 50% Inzolia produced from twelve-year-old vines thriving in red, limestone-rich soil. The wines undergo wild fermentation on skins and are matured in concrete tanks before some aging in bottle.

After years of toiling in the bourbon trade, pitmaster cum whiskey magnate Casey Bringle is off to the world of rye, dropping this 8 year old expression of Peg Leg Porker as his first entry into the category. Made with the classic 95% rye, 5% malted barley mashbill — but in Tennessee, not Indiana — and made with his hickory charcoal finishing process, this is Bringle’s first whiskey release since 2020. How does Peg Leg do in the world of rye? Let’s not dally as we work to find out. The trademark smokiness of Peg Leg Porker bourbon is well in effect here, offering an aromatic combination of barbecue pit smoke, mint, and dry grass — classic rye character filtered unmistakably through the heat of the pit. Some chocolate and nutty elements add more approachability up top, alongside a hint of cherry, heavy on the pit. On the palate, the whiskey’s got plenty of heat, quite drying thanks to its boldly grassy quality and laden with the essence of hay being harvested out in the open field. I wouldn’t say water’s an absolute must, but it sure doesn’t hurt, coaxing out some needed sweetness in the form of honeycomb, peanut butter, and mint syrup, almost julep-adjacent at times. Toasty and mildly sweet but still a bit green on the finish, the whiskey acquits itself in the end as a hearty expression of rye that fully features the grain and lets secondary notes drift in and out as needed. - drinkhacker.com

Sold out at the distillery in a matter of minutes, this deep, decadent single malt was finished in a rare 300L Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask from Dutschke Wines in the Barossa following an initial spell in McWilliams Apera Sherry casks. The latter brings apple creams and beautiful biscuity malt, with sticky raisin, date like qualities from the PX cask and a beautiful long, lasting finish. The PX cask was also Waubs' first barrel to be coopered on-site at the edge of the ocean in Bicheno, Tasmania. We've just received a very limited allocation. Be quick! 51% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... NOSE: Lovely rich resinous oak, sticky wood spices and stewed fruits. Spiced apples - cinnamon, nutmeg, plenty of brown sugar and dates, made into a thick resinous jam and poured onto a hot apple pie. PALATE: There is such depth to this whisky. The initial heat of a higher strength whisky gives way to a massively oily and rich decadent spirit. The age of the PX at 21yrs old comes through. The depth in that full flavour, mmmm. Add some homemade custard to that nose. Just yum. FINISH: Long lasting, such a lovely example of maturing in quality casks. The whisky spirit joins and holds those dates and raisins on the palate long after making you to want to go back for more.

One of Mexico's crown jewels.
First released in 1995 to celebrate the company's 200th birthday, José Cuervo Reserva de la Familia pioneered the category of extended age Tequila. Matured for a minimum of two years in a combination of American and French oak barrels, some of the reserve components are up to thirty years old. The tequila itself which has been described as "rich and brandy-like" doesn't change much from year to year. And just as consistency has become its hallmark, so too has been its high praise. What does change annually is the packaging, with a different Mexican artist making each release a collector’s item.
In 2023 the box has been designed by artists Rolando Flores and Gabriel Cázares of the Mexico-based Tercerunquinto Collective. The custom art titled “Structuring a Landscape”, features a geometric abstraction of the landscape of Jalisco.
[2017 edition tasted from a 20ml sample] Pale copper gold. The bouquet combines blanco-like vibrancy with the kind of depth you'd expect from XO cognac - brine, charred capsicum, smoldering eucalyptus, beeswax, vanilla and menthol... with air contact, it also presents a drier, woody aspect including cigar box, cedar and white pepper. Likewise the silky delivery matches sappy agave and butter menthol lozenge-like flavours against drying astringency. It's delicate and somewhat fleeting through the finish, trailing off with black tea, potpourri, white pepper, hints of grilled pineapple, vanilla and trace beeswax. The overall effect strikes a fine balance between young and old. 40% Alc./Vol.
