2022 Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg Chenin Blanc
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $170. 00
    Bottle
    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

This extraordinary 100% Chenin Blanc hails from South Africa’s northernmost wine region, the arid Citrusdal Mountain WO, on the west bank of the Olifants River. Specifically, the fruit is drawn from three parcels of 90-year-old, ungrafted bush vines on the decomposed, red sandstone slopes of the Skurfberg (which means ‘rigid mountain’). Planted between 1940 and 1955, these are three immaculately farmed vineyards that have never been treated with herbicide or chemical fertilizers.

Fruit from each vineyard is vinified separately, basket-pressed, then transferred to old casks for natural fermentation. Following 12 months on lees, the wine is blended, then returned to the same casks for a further six months before being bottled directly from foudre.

    Other Reviews....
Coming from the most northerly aspect of the range, the 2022 Old Vine Series Skurfberg opens with a waxy nose and notions of dusty yellow apple and Meyer lemon with white melon. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate reveals a fine mineral tension with a delightful kiss of sea spray before displaying a classic, food-friendly phenolic bitterness. The wine glides into a long, lingering and subtly spiced finish. Only 4,200 bottles were produced. Drink 2023 - 2037.

The 2022 Skurfberg is pure Chenin Blanc from Citrusdal Mountains at 640m altitude, whole bunch pressed into old foudres. It has a pristine bouquet with yellow plum, crushed rock and a touch of lanolin, with hints of orange blossom coming through with time. The palate is lightly spiced on the entry with touches of stem ginger and a perfect line of acidity, gently building in the mouth towards an entrancing livewire finish that lingers long in the mouth. Thrilling. Drink 2025-2050.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

Adrian Rodda started making wine in 1998, where he worked at Oakridge Wines in the Yarra Valley for over a decade. In 2010, Adrian moved to Beechworth in Northeast Victoria to make Chardonnay from the Smiths Vineyard, the oldest vineyard in modern Beechworth. In 2012, he started the "Chardonnay Project," where he sources grapes from the Willow Lake Vineyard in the Yarra Valley and makes wine alongside the Smiths Vineyard Chardonnay. In 2017, a third Chardonnay was added from the Baxendale Vineyard at Whitlands in the cool upper reaches of Northeast Victoria. The Baxendale Vineyard was planted in 1995 on volcanic soils at an elevation of 600m. Handpicked grapes are pressed to 500l French oak barrels (33% being new barrels) for fermentation and 12 months of maturation on lees.

Vineyard sits at 600m ASL, planted 1995. All three Rodda Chardonnays are made pretty much the same way, which is a good way to express region/site, aside from the Triangle Block, which gets a bit move of a push in the winery. Friand and spice, floral, melon and grapefruit. Firm acidity, a little green apple, distinctly flinty and chalky, with something of a sappy-sour-edged, yet also slightly creamy almond finish of good length. Pretty tight, but very nice. Steen is of course the old South African name for chenin blanc. This comes from an old vine parcel. Au naturale winemaking of course, from one of South Africa’s most notable winemakers, and one who was part of a revolution for avant garde and premium wine from the country.
High toned green herb, floral and appley aromas and flavours, a good deal of saline nuttiness and wheatgerm savouriness. It’s very concentrated and decidedly savoury, preserved lemon but with a huge, oatmeal savouriness to taste and chewy, powdery-minerally feel. Great intensity and yet control. Outstanding. $899.88 Dozen

Hemelrand Vine Garden is a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions, as the idea behind is to bottle a wine just as the vineyard produces it. The Hemelrand vineyard, situated on the Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone, was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. As mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. The 2020 release is composed of 32% Chardonnay, 25% Roussanne, 25% Chenin, 13% Verdelho and 5% Muscat.

The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Hemelrand Vine Garden is one of Chris Alheit's biggest successes and encapsulates everything great about his wine. Initially quite neutral, it reveals wondrous sea spray, honeysuckle, Provençal herbs and hints of powdered chalk on the nose. The palate has exquisite balance, very cohesive and intense, yet the acidity keeps this so fresh with hints of yellow plum, frangipane and quince towards the extended finish. You just want to go back for another sip (and I bet you will). Drink 2024-2042.

Fire by Night is a single origin Chenin Blanc wine grown on Alheit's own Paardeberg property called Nuwedam, planted between 1972 and 1985 on various east, west, and north facing blocks. These vineyards are the pride and joy of the family, where the pure decomposed granite soils yield wines of clarity and focus.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in either cements eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

Hereafter Here (intentionally similar sounding to year after year, denoting the passage of time) is based on two young vine blocks in Stellenbosch. The main contributor is the Baby Duck vineyard, planted on granite soils on a gentle southern slope in the Polkadraai Hills ward, while the second vineyard is planted in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley on deep red soil.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

The 2021 Hereafter Here is a level up from the previous vintage. There's a bit more pizzazz on the nose, more vigour with enticing honeysuckle and orange pith scents. The palate is well balanced with fine concentration, cohesive, not as complex as some of Alheit's other cuvées, yet fresh and saline on the finish. Very fine. Drink 2023-2033.

First produced in 2020, this Chenin Blanc hails from dry farmed, bush vine vineyards that are less than 20 years' old, blending components from Stellenbosch and the Swartland. Savoury and refreshing, with mouth-watering acidity, rock salt and lemongrass flavours and the zip that's typical of the 2021 whites. Drink 2022-2029.

Cartology means the study of maps or charts and the wine itself can be seen as a vinous map or tapestry of the Cape. It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of parcels of mature dryland bushvines of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc (93%) and Sémillon (7%). The Chenin comes from parcels in the Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Sémillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.

This year, Chris Alheit had a delightful little surprise in store for me with a vertical of Cartology from 2022 to 2018. Bursting with energetic acidity, the 2021 Cartology Bush Vines is incredibly food friendly but will need one more year to come around. Medium-bodied, the wine is spicy on the mid-palate with a complex and mineral-laced expression before ending with a succulent finish. Start drinking in 2024. Drink 2024 - 2036.

The 2021 Cartology is a worthy follow-up to the 2020. It unfurls gradually on the nose with honeysuckle and light yellow plum and mirabelle scents, a mineral undertow that stealthily gains prominence. The palate is very well balanced with just a killer line of acidity; Nashi pear and yellow plum commingle towards a resinous finish. After 10 minutes, it really beginning to fire on all cylinders - another magnificent Cartology. Superb. Drink 2023-2042.

Is it only just over a decade since the first vintage of this trend-setting wine in 2011? Cartology seems to have been with us for longer than that. The 2021 release marries Chenin with 10% Semillon, this is a seamless Western Cape blend, showing flavours of saffron, beeswax, pear, fresh herbs and lemon juice and engaging purity and focus. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Cartology is blended with 7% Semillon and is essentially an amalgam of Alheit's vineyards, whole bunch pressed and kept on the lees for 12 months. It has a very different nose compared to the "Hereafter Here": more minerality, touches of white tea and broom filtering through the citrus fruit. The palate is very harmonious, spicy and focused, gently building in the mouth towards that finish with a dab of saffron and stem ginger. Wonderful persistence and just a wine that grabs you, demands attention. This is simply outstanding. Drink 2023-2040.

The 2020 Hemelrand Vine Garden comes from a field blend albeit planted in rows that makes it easier to manage. It is aged on the gross lees for 12 months. It has a wonderful bouquet with yellow plum, honeysuckle and a very slight petrolly scent, all supremely well defined. The palate is very well balanced with a saline entry, fine tension with a pithy, lightly spiced finish that lingers with touches of stem ginger and fennel. Maybe my pick of Alheit's 2020s? This is a profound white Rhône blend that will be fascinating to watch age in bottle. Drink: 2023-2038.

The 2022 Montefalco Grechetto opens in the glass with mint leaves, dusty florals and hints of crushed green apple forming a delicate bouquet. It's round and pleasantly sweet with crisp white pit fruit and spices as saline-tinged minerals add a salty edge toward the close. Grillo is a grape variety native to Sicily which traditionally was used for the production of Marsala. It’s a late ripening varietal, typically grown on bush vines, and needs a warm to hot climate to prosper – it is therefore no surprise that it has thrived on the sundrenched hills of Sicily for over 2000 years. More recently its potential for creating refreshing dry whites bursting with flavour has come to the fore.

The fruit is Estate grown and vinified using hand-picked fruit, meticulous hand-sorting, and a cool, slow fermentation to preserve its aromatic qualities. The resulting wines are crisp and vibrant, showcasing strong notes of pear, citrus, and stone fruit. The wine's acidity and saline character make it a perfect match for the savory and seafood dishes of the Basque Country.

Txacoli is a great summer white, light in body and perfect for pairing with fish or seafood. It's usually a coastal wine, often with a slight spritz. This incarnation comes from further inland, near Rioja – it's fuller bodied than some, and doesn't have a spritz. It's still utterly delicious though, with a brisk, marine aroma, softening on the palate slightly to give juicy green apple flavours. Fresh and vibrant, drink it in its youth. Drink 2022 - 2023.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and lemon scents infused with wet steel mix with subtle kerosene and mineral notes. Racy lemon and lime fruits sizzle across the palate with some Granny Smith apple, orange rind and steely mineral characters lurking underneath. Excellent concentration combines with zippy razor like acidity to form a long crunchy mineral laced finish.

Intensity of flavour is quite remarkable here. This really explodes onto the palate. Lemon, green pineapple, slate and musk characters drive straight and true, start to finish, all the way through to a (very) lengthy finish. This will mature over the long term. Drink by 2037.

A classically styled Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that regularly vies for New Zealand’s best value Sauvvy B. Brilliant water like colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Pungent herbaceous gooseberry and passionfruit aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some green apple, grassy asparagus and mineral notes. Super scrumptious passionfruit and ripe gooseberry fruits are delivered with abundant power and concentration. Green apple, herbaceous grassy characters and zingy minerals linger underneath. Excellent volume finishing dry with racy acidity and a long moreish aftertaste. Difficult to imagine better bang for your buck than this.

Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear, red apple and honeysuckle mix with some subtle quince and wet stone notes. Making a supple entrance are delicious pear and apple fruits which overlay quince, subtle dried honey and wet stone elements. Finishes dry with a lick of brisk acidity enlivening what is a beautifully shaped conclusion.

Made from Viura grapes. Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with a distinct greenish tinge around the edges. Elevated lime and green apple aromas infused with fresh herbs mix with hints of lemon and slatey mineral notes. Zesty lime, green apple and lemon fruits are underscored by crunchy saline infused acidity. Finishes dry with good tension. Some attractive slatey mineral and oyster shell elements linger on the long invigorating aftertaste.

Barrel fermented in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques and aged on lees for 11 months. Bright straw colour with a glimmer of green to the edges and a watery hue. Intense ripe peach, apricot and dried honey scents are intermeshed with crème brulee, nougat and hints of spicy bacon fat. Rich, creamy textured flavours of ripe peach, apricot, honeycomb and crème brulee adorn the full bodied palate with notions of roasted almonds, nougat and spice lingering underneath. Nicely balanced acidity finishing long and luscious. A rich full blown style of Chardonnay.
