Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. Saline and crystalline on the first palate, this is a pure, fresh and concentrated but also lush and vitalizing Riesling with a pure, enormously saline and tensioned finish with fine tannin grip. 12.5% stated alcohol. So deep, it feels like it’s pulling you in the direction of the center of the earth! Yet, another side of the wine seems to float above the world. Radically mineral finish that leaves you in no doubt about this great dry riesling’s future! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a clear, pure, fresh, saline and really classic Riesling bouquet that is clearly influenced by iron notes as well as the ripe and concentrated Riesling berry. Saline and finessed on the palate, this is a tightly structured pure and tensioned dry Riesling with lots of salinity but also ripe and fleshy fruit with fine tannins, both representing a warm, ripe vintage. If you’re a Barolo fan, then here’s a dry riesling for you! The first impression is silky and suave, but then the massive structure - including tons of fine tannin - asserts itself. The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

The 2019 Reiterpfad-Hofstück GG is still slightly reductive, opening to a precise and flinty-scented bouquet with tropical fruit aromas and generous ripeness and warmth but also precision. The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

Alpha Box & Dice, located in McLaren Vale, is undertaking a "Wine Alphabet" project where each 'letter' represents a distinct winemaking venture, aiming to create a comprehensive collection of wines that showcase the various styles and grape varieties found in the well-known wine regions of South Australia, such as McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, and the Barossa Valley.
This Riesling (from Auburn, Clare Valley) was planted in 2002, at an elevation of 460m-470m. Harvested at night and gently pressed to tank where it is fermented at very cool temperatures for 2 months until dry.
Brilliant water like core with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Jumping out of the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents which intermix with talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes. Mouth watering, the palate is awash with a concentrate of lime and citrus fruits which are framed by a tight steely core. Some green apple, orange rind, chalky talc and mineral characters lend support. Despite its steely nature it shows plenty of textural volume. Crunchy acidity finishing dry and long.

Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. Subsequent plantings followed in 1944 (since removed), 1978 and 1998. Always very flavoursome and very age worthy, the Best’s Great Western Rieslings are renown for their beautiful balance, texture and aromatics.
The 2023 vintage was long and late with the first Riesling grapes being harvested in early March. This long cool vintage allowed fruit flavours to mature, while natural acidity was retained.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. The nose offers up a symphony of lime, red apple and orange blossom aromas which are trailed by hints of honeysuckle and delicate spice. Excellent riesling, having moved well away from the the oft-domestic norm of battery-acid dryness and talcy acidity, some years ago. Succulent kaffir lime, baking apple, quince and nashi pear. A waft of phenolics as useful as the trickle of acidity, juicy and palpably natural. This draws the saliva from the mouth. Reaching for the next glass is auto-pilot. Bravo! Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The zippy palate features racy lime and lemon fruit over crunchy green apple, wet steel and mineral elements. Finishes dry and taut with sizzling acidity and a long zesty conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Partially barrel fermented (40%). The fruit flavours themselves are the key here, they're just so intense and so striking, all lime and green pineapple, apple skins and lemon meringue pie. There's a textural element and a tautness, but that fruit, wow, it's a force to be reckoned with. Drink by 2032.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

2021 Marienburg Kabinett is clear, pure and intense on the reductive and slatey/saline nose. On the palate, this is a lush and round, salty, piquant and salivating Kabinett with ripe and lush fruit but a fruity rather than sweet finish. Bottled with more than 10.5 grams per liter of acidity and nearly 60 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2028 - 2060.

Tons of floral honey, ripe grapefruit and candied ginger make this concentrated and succulent riesling Spätlese really stand out of the crowd in this field. So much candied citrus on the rich yet cool and refined palate. The finish is both lush and very mineral. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Marienburg Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from fruit picked at 96° Oechsle from a selection of partially (10%) botrytized fruit and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely backward and almost non-saying nose at first and the wine takes a while before revealing some faint scents of pear, melon, lemon zest, smoke, and a hint of whipped cream. However, it proves remarkably alluring on the palate where finely chiseled fruity and mineral flavors are beautifully wrapped into ripe yet zesty acidity. The finish is beautifully playful, deep, multi-layered, and refined. This modern-day equivalent of a clean Auslese GK from the 1990s is a true winner. Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Drink 2024-2032.

Gigantically fresh, with a whole garden of fresh herbs, plus white peach and a touch of white currant. Great energy whipping it down the road on the sleek and focused palate. It’s not easy to prise apart the complex fragrance of the Marienburg Spätlese, suffice to say that herbal and mineral elements shape the first impression, with fine floral and fruity notes demanding a little more olfactory application. The taste of crunchy apple and zesty citrus fruit gets the juices flowing, sweet lemony acidity prolongs the sensory stimulation. More classic than avant-garde, traditionalists deserve to be pleased too.

Smelling this is like walking through a cottage garden full of spring flowers especially fragrant with lime blossom. Third generation winemakers Tom and Sam Barry of Jim Barry fame run the Clos Clare operation. This is their fifteenth vintage from Clos Clare's Riesling patch of 52 year old dry grown vines which adjoins the historic Jim Barry 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint glimmer of green around the edges. Potent lemon and lime scents leap out of the glass followed by orange rind, Granny Smith apple, talc and steely mineral notes. Underscored by searing acidity the tightly coiled palate is adorned with lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fruits that show great power. Notions of wet steel, chalky talc and flinty mineral characters also chime in. Tense, structured feel with a dry crunchy finish. The long snappy aftertaste delivered with laser like precision.

Intensity and concentration seem to be the calling cards of 2022 Clare Valley riesling, and here's a case in point. Huge energy and velocity, this is tightly wound and racy with a filigree of lime, green apple, grapefruit, ginger, talc and green herbs oscillating between the bouquet and palate. Texture is gently chalky and mouth-watering, extending exceptionally long while keeping all that structure and architecture of fruit, herbal detail and minerality in a very compact frame. Above all, it's an incredibly refreshing and lively thing to drink. Yes, thanks. Drink by 2040.

Great to see these mature release wines from Crawford River. Prophetic review from CM from the young release too…
This is flying. Beautiful wine marrying gentle maturity in characters of lightly toasted white bread, honeysuckle, wild honey, candle wax and yet impossible freshness of Granny Smith apple and lime. The palate is bright albeit gently slippery with age, more of the secondary characters of the bouquet and still holding a compact, racy form. The finish is almost sparkling with pink grapefruit and gin-like botanical zestiness. Stellar. Drink 2023 - 2030+

All hail Crawford River riesling! The top dog from the top dog!
It’s magnificent. A schooling in riesling beauty, tension, texture, vitality, layers of fruit, spice, yeasty elements and a persistence that can’t be beat. If anything, a little more understated than other Reserve rieslings from CR, not quite delicate but playing to a more gentle strength. Fragrant, with a fog of fruit and spice, flavoursome but in a sheath of lightly puckering texture. Stains the palate gently too. I like that the wine has character, not set to a standard, loaded with character. Vibrant through that great trail of the finish. Stellar stuff. Drink 2023 - 2035+

This is one of the most straight up delicious releases I have tried. Moreish to the max. It’s succulent in texture, which is important, which means it’s juicy but also has chalky pucker. perfect. This one has a lime sorbet bent, green apple sherbet too, a splash of gin n tonic perhaps – all of that sounds pretty delicious as a thing to consume. It’s fragrant, flavoursome and very refreshing. The Riesling, harvested in mid April, underwent natural fermentation in seasoned French oak barrels followed by maturation of over six months on delicate yeast lees. The aroma unfolds with understated complexity, revealing initial hints of lime and lemon zest, followed by nuances of sherbet, spice, floral accents, and a savory touch from the lees.

Light-medium yellow colour; some wild ferment edginess and lift on the nose coupled with candied citrus peel and fruit compote aromas. The wine is bright and lively in the mouth, with a richness and range of flavours that must reflect the way the wine was vinified and matured. It takes riesling to a different place than simple varietal fruit. The depth of flavour is special, the finish lingers on and on, and the wine is tremendously seamless and harmonious, acidity definitely there but not strongly felt. The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is very intense and aromatic on the dense and voluptuous nose. Lush and creamy on the palate, this is a generous and dense, lush and persistent Brücke Spätlese with remarkable freshness and piquancy. It's pretty straight and piquant, with remarkable finesse and mineral tension. Tasted in July 2019.

White peach, quince and red raspberry give an impression on the nose and the creamy, polished palate of both jellied and fresh fruits. An influx of lime serves for welcome, animating brightness, and the penetratingly sustained, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish is transparent to wet stone, setting up a shimmering fruit–mineral exchange.

This is a decadent sweet wine with bright dried peaches, white truffle and light honey. Tropical fruit, too. Full-bodied, dense and layered with beautiful intensity and richness. Sweet finish.

2017 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Alte Reben Reserve Riesling Grosses Gewachs
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $245. 00

    $2940.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

    Other Reviews....
Aged on the full lees for 24 months, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben offers a clear, deep, elegant and flinty bouquet with nutty sur lie and concentrated fruit aromas with lemony nuances. Crystalline, refined yet also intense and complex on the palate, the 2017 Laychen Réserve from the original Sonnenuhr combines intensity and texture with finesse, salinity and delicate lemon notes, and it paves the palate with fine tannins and lush, slowly maturing fruit. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. 2,450 bottles made. To be released in March 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

A touch of beeswax and dried lemon peel flickers on the shy nose of 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. It was harvested in the Laychen parcel from ancient vines of up to 130 years of age. More air intensifies these notions that continue right through onto the palate. The body is concentrated, sinuous, elegant and comes with a flavor suggesting lemon-scented stearin, imbued with salty notions and lovely highlights of ripe, juicy lemon. The result is a wine that seemingly draws you down into stony depth. Vivid, smooth, poised, juicy and mellow, despite the bright lemon notes. Elixir-like. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

What a beautiful nose of ripe peach and toasted baguette this creamy and concentrated Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG has! I love the very sensual way that the mineral acidity is woven into the ample body of this irresistible wine that defies the regular descriptors for dry Mosel riesling with its succulence. Drink or hold.

Due the rich, red volcanic soils, Urziger Wurzgarten produces wines unlike any other in the region. As the name would suggest, expect an exotic and spice laden Riesling that leans more towards tropical fruit flavours than the neighbouring vineyards.

The 2017 Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichler Réserve Alte Reben is deep and noble on the intense yet pure, refined and elegant nose that offers a subtle bouquet with elegant sur lie and ripe (mirabelle) fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round on the palate, with nutty notes, this is a very fine, vital and elegant Würzgarten with frisky, saline acidity that leads to a very elegant, intense and juicy, saline and finely bitter finish. This is a gorgeous Riesling from the Würzgarten, and it will be released in March 2023. Only 2,481 bottles made. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Russet pear peel and ripe, golden pear juice appear first on the nose of the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. The palate has a wonderfully light texture and yet is dense with flavor and a smooth richness suggesting dried lemon peel, pear peel, subtle wax and tingling notions reminiscent of spiced apple. The finish is poised, extended, absolutely elegant and defined by ripe lemon freshness. Compact, concentrated, serene. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

What a beautiful combination of toastiness, candied citrus and pineapple plus notes of dried strawberry and allspice this stunning Wurzgarten GG has. Great concentration and power, yet still only medium-bodied this has an impressive vitality for its age at the compact long finish. Drink or hold.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Erdener Prälat Réserve Alte Reben is pure, fine and flinty on the beautifully aromatic nose that reveals tropical fruit aromas intertwined with delicate slate tones and remains utterly refined. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a fruity, saline and sustainable, very intense and stimulating Prälat with gorgeous hedonistic features. The wine is enormously aromatic and fruity, with mango and peach aromas and everything that's yellow and lush, but it also has this superb finesse of the red slate in the Prälat and reflects its sunny exposition adjacent to the riverside. 3,743 bottles filled. 12.5% stated alcohol. The nose of the 2017 Riesling Erdener Prälat Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve takes some swirling but the Erdener Prälat comes alive with gentle hints of spiced orange: think subtle clove and Navel peel joined by notions of dried lemon rind. The texture is serene, smooth, utterly compact and filled with flavors of wax, lemon and slightly bitter, dried lemon zest that seems to be dissolved in subtle oiliness. A wonderful sensation on the palate, utterly bright, deeply salty and effortlessly elegant. Wow. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Enormously dense nose of mango and papaya. Gigantic concentration and power for a German dry riesling this inhabits its own habitat on Planet Mosel. Brain-rattling intensity and energy at the moment, so we recommend decanting and using large glasses. Better still, give this a few more years in the bottle. Either way this should silence any doubters about this category. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben shows an intense, elegant and coolish bouquet of ripe, bright fruits and flint stones. An exquisitely creamy sense of lemon pervades the nose of the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben, almost as of lemon posset. With more air, notions of tangerine peel appear with much aromatic appeal. The palate reinforces all this wonderful zestiness shimmering with ripe Amalfi lemon and tangerine. This is marked by a delightful serenity, great concentration and an intense saltiness that, along with the zestiness, makes the palate tingle. Glorious, dry, statuesque. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Cool and herbal, but well-balanced and elegant this 2021 riesling GG has an appealing silkiness in spite of the lemony acidity. The positive tannins build at the long, structured finish. Although this site has a reputation for wines that show really well early in their life this really needs some time. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

From Permian rhyolite, the 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben opens up into a nose making you believe that you can smell texture because this sports wonderful notes of russet pear peel. The palate adds lovely notions of pepper to a body that has a smooth but concentrated texture. There is such limpidity of flavor, such charm, such elegance. A super-bright version of lemon acidity highlights it all. Beautiful and echoing with exquisite length. (Dry). Drink 2025-2050.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
