For generations, the Alfonso family has crafted wine in Rías Baixas using traditional and biodynamic methods. The Pedralonga vineyards benefit from an Atlantic climate, bringing gentle temperatures and ample rainfall throughout the year. Planted in sandy loam soils at the base of the Xiabre mountain, where the vineyards receive abundant sunshine for the healthy ripening of fruit.
Hand-picked Albarino is pressed to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation, where they undergo malolactic conversion on the lees and a further 6 months of maturation. Expect a fresh palate, with good acidity and hints of green apple, unctuous texture, and mineral salinity.

2021 Cesar Marquez Perez El Val Godello
    Bierzo, SPAIN
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Cesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up around surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

El Val is a new wine of 100% Godello from a cool, high altitude vineyard, and transcends the quality limits expected of this grape in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
The new white 2021 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille—the same place as a new white for the family firm Castro Ventosa—with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 12.48% alcohol, very good parameters for acidity and freshness and a consistent sensation on the palate. It's from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 11 months. It's super elegant, very clean, precise, symmetric and delineated, transparent, harmonious and elegant, like a grand cru Burgundy. Bravo! The price is high, reflecting scarcity but also quality. It transcends the appellation and the variety. Only 521 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2023-2032.

La Salvacion is a Godello cuvee from the east facing Argaza vineyard situated at 700 meters altitude with clay soils.

    Other Reviews....
The spectacular white Godello 2021 La Salvación was produced with grapes from a one-hectare centenary plot in Arganza, the northernmost and cooler village in Bierzo, a plot that was regrafted from Mencía some 17 years ago. The destemmed grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press, and the juice fermented in 500-liter oak barrels after setting for 24 hours. It matured in those barrels for one year, with the lees but without bâtonnage. It has 12.56% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, consistent with a cold year, with an expressive nose of dry flowers and pollen, aromatic and showy, open and clean, very precise and pure. It has less alcohol than the previous year, with a super fresh palate. 5,200 bottles were filled in August 2022. Drink 2023-2029.

    2021 Envinate Parcela Palo Blanco
    Tenerife, SPAIN
    $81. 99
    Bottle
    $983.88 Dozen
    ABV: 11.5%
    Closure: Cork

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. Migan is two parcels of Listan Negro, both over 100 years old, while Palo Blanco is a single vineyard from the town of Los Realejos planted on black volcanic soils.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Palo Blanco has an expressive, clean and open nose reminiscent of flowers, herbs and a spicy twist. The wine is supple and fresh, with vibrant acidity and a long and salty finish. 12,000 bottles and 287 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2022. Drink 2023 - 2029.

Fresh, reductive nose with a hint of white sesame. A mineral coating to the tangy lime citrus and pomelo skins. White chalk, freshly cut parsley and celery as well. A laser beam of piercing acidity provides energy, sharpness and speed to the pure and bone-dry palate that’s full of tension but no flesh. Demanding and austere, yet so delicious and effortlessly pure and gastronomic in nature, with electric linearity and a mouthwatering finish. Even more extreme than 2020? Only 11.5% alcohol. Embrace the acidity! Drink now.

    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Benje refers to an area high above the cloud cover on the western edge of the Tiede volcano. It’s an area that produces markedly different wines, from the sappy freshness of the coastal zones but still carries the hallmark lightness of all of Envínate’s wines. Benje Tinto is straight Listan Prieto, Benje Blanco is Listan Blanco. Both are grown on a mixture of old ash and red clay at over 1000m above sea level.

    Other Reviews....
There's more volume in the 2021 Benje Blanco, from a year that was very warm and dry. The grapes achieved high ripeness in a short time, and they used more flor to try to sharpen the wine and make the palate finer and longer. They did a softer vinification to try not to extract any herbal notes. 18,000 bottles and 150 magnums. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered in June 2022. Drink 2023 - 2028.

Mineral, flinty nose with pomelo skins and an implicit chalky, seashell character. Extremely bright on the palate with demandingly high acidity that immediately makes your mouth water. The zingy, crystalline finish delivers purity and austerity. Delicious and gastronomic.

    Bottle
    $983.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Táganan is both the name of a village on the very north eastern tip of Tenerife and a local term for steep slope. Envínate make two reds and two whites from this village; Táganan Tinto and Blanco, which come from multiple old parcels and two crus, parcelas Campanario and Margalagua. All the wines are field blends containing a dizzying array of obscure local varieties grown on very old bush vines in the steep volcanic soils overlooking the ocean.

    Other Reviews....
Listán Blanco represents 50% to 60% of the volume in the 2021 Táganan Blanco, and I found a very strong varietal character in the nose. This is spicy with notes of clove, dry flowers and chamomile, and it has a very lively palate with very high acidity coupled with very good volume. 3,200 bottles were filled in July 2022. Drink 2023 - 2029.

Subtle white sesame reduction with flinty lemon, seashell, seaweed funk and fresh parsley on the nose. Nervy, dry and chalky on the palate with a waterfall of fresh acidity that delivers a speedy, linear palate without any fleshiness. Ferociously austere but delicious and so drinkable. Very intellectual. Drink now.

Nekeas was established by a number of generational growers in the late 1980’s. Hit by hard times, low grape prices and high labour costs they were forced to pull up most of most of their vines during the 1960’s. However, with winemaking still flowing through their veins a group of landholders made the decision to pool some of their resources, embarking on a project to plant new vineyards and build a modern production facility.
Fruit for the ‘El Rincon’ Chardonnay is sourced from vineyards with an elevation of 600-650m (one of the highest, coolest wine corners of Spain with huge diurnal temperature swings). Fermentation is spontaneous in top quality French oak followed by three months of aging on fine lees.
Bright pale straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted ripe peach, apricot and honeycomb aromas fill the nostrils followed by some crème brulee and subtle toasty oak notes. Rich, creamy textured and mouth filling the palate features a concentrated flavour profile of ripe peaches, apricot and honeycomb over crème brulee, toasty oak and spicy nougat characters. Nicely balanced it finishes long, round and very moreish.

    ABV: 13%

Terroir al Limit is Dominik Huber's hommage to the wines of Priorat before Wine Critics from the 90's were chasing high-octane wines. His restrained approach to winemaking has resulted in wines that speak more of finesse, purity, and freshness, showing that Priorat wines do not have to be heavy, thick, and oaky. The use of high-altitude, old-vine plots allows him to harvest ripe fruit with maximum freshness, coupled with the use of whole-bunch fermentation, Huber’s wines have an almost Burgundian-like shape and structure, generating vibrancy and succulence.

Huber has also shown that the whites of the region can be every bit as great as the reds. The 2021 Terra de Cuques is a blend of 90% Pedro Ximénez and 10% Moscatel de Alejandría (Muscat) from vineyards at 400 to 600m above sea level. The grapes are very slowly pressed to achieve some minor maceration and extraction, and are wild fermented, and matured on lees in concrete tanks.

    Other Reviews....
Subtle green spice and cement to the squeezed lemon and grapefruit, with a hint of nori-like umami. Dry, creamy and sleek, with medium to full body and lovely texture to the neutral fruit, though not lacking in substance. Very contained. Drink now or hold.

The very recently bottled 2021 Terra de Cuques Blanc was produced with 90% Pedro Ximénez and 10% Muscat with a moderate 13% alcohol, the minimum required by the appellation. It's serious, with good freshness, a little reductive at first but then more expressive with abundant notes of pollen and a honeyed touch, with a little skin contact that gives it character and some notes of quince and fine tannins. There's finesse and elegance and it's very clean. They have food in mind when they do the wines, so there is a constant search for freshness. There is a good demand for whites, and they sell everything, but the planting of white vineyards is limited. Drink 2023 - 2030.

From Rias Baixas, this is a ripper rendition of the variety, delivering detail, awesome saline minerality and lots of drinkability. Opens with that oyster shell scent, sea spray, anise and lemon in mineral water. Tingly in the palate, beautifully minerally and so very fresh in feel; more of the lemon in mineral water, but strong, concentrated and bright. Has a glass shard feel to texture, crisp and mouth-watering. Easy to love, really easy to get into. Drink 2021-2023.

Astobiza is produced from the traditional Basque varieties Ondarrabi Zuri (90%) and Ondarrabi Zuri Zerratie (10%). The fruit is Estate grown and vinified using hand-picked fruit, meticulous hand-sorting, and a cool, slow fermentation to preserve its aromatic qualities. The resulting wines are crisp and vibrant, showcasing strong notes of pear, citrus, and stone fruit. The wine's acidity and saline character make it a perfect match for the savory and seafood dishes of the Basque Country.

Txacoli is a great summer white, light in body and perfect for pairing with fish or seafood. It's usually a coastal wine, often with a slight spritz. This incarnation comes from further inland, near Rioja – it's fuller bodied than some, and doesn't have a spritz. It's still utterly delicious though, with a brisk, marine aroma, softening on the palate slightly to give juicy green apple flavours. Fresh and vibrant, drink it in its youth. Drink 2022 - 2023.

Envínate, which literally translates as “Wine Yourself,” is the project of four young passionate winemakers: Roberto Santana (based in the Canaries), Jose Martinez (Almansa), Laura Ramos (Murcia) and Alfonso Torrente (Ribeira Sacra). The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.

In 2008, the group bought their first vineyard in Ribeira Sacra, then took control of vineyards on the north side of Tenerife, and followed with a single patch of Tinta Amarela in Extremadura. Finally, in 2012, the group began working with a site in Almansa, where Jose lives and works, planted to Garnacha Tintorera. In each region, they work old, previously abandoned vineyards, but importantly for a project with such spread, one of the team lives full time in each location, working the vineyards year round.

2020 was also very dry, like 2019 in Santiago del Teide in the south of Tenerife. The grapes for the 2020 Benje Blanco were picked earlier than ever, starting in mid-August. The wine fermented by plot in concrete with indigenous yeasts, and 20% of the volume matured in an oval 2,500-liter oak foudre and the rest in concrete, where half of it developed a thin layer of flor yeasts that give it a sharper texture rather than aromas or flavors, as these yeasts eat glycerin and make finer wines. So, the flor is only in 40% of the wine, less than in 2019. The difference here is that they stopped controlling the temperature (something they already did with Palo Blanco) and they stopped using 228-liter barrels and moved to 350-liter barrels from Chassagne-Montrachet. It makes the wine more expressive of the soils and with less fruit character. All this has increased clarity and definition in the white wines from Tenerife. This is livelier. 15,000 bottles and 150 magnums were produced. It was bottled in June 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

    $899.88 Dozen

I was blown away by a magnum of the white 2020 Palo Blanco I drank a few days before I tasted it again with its creators. Palo Blanco is the name of a zone in the village of Los Realejos in Tenerife, one of the finest locations for Listán Blanco (Palomino). In 2020 they used the grapes from five plots (they started with only one and 6,600 bottles in 2016), which means they have been able to increase volumes and, thankfully, also quality! The new plot is at 850 meters, so the grapes bring more freshness. These are always the last grapes they pick in Tenerife, even in an early harvest like 2020. The destemmed grapes were pressed and the juice let to settle for 12 to 24 hours and then fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete without temperature control. Sixty-five percent of the wine matured in 2,500-liter oak foudres and the rest in neutral 350-liter barrels with lees. There is a smoky and spicy, flinty touch and a vibrant palate with a spark of acidity that makes the wine very long and tasty. This now plays in the major league. 2020 saw the earliest harvest ever for this wine. 11,000 bottles and 200 magnums were filled in December 2021. Drink 2022 - 2030.

An outstanding white from the Valle de la Orotava, the 2018 Palo Blanco is named after a zone or "paraje" from the village of Los Realejos that produced Listán Blanco of a strong and different personality. In 2018, they used a further two plots, one at 500 and the other one at 850 meters in altitude, all three planted with centenary "cordón trenzado" braided vines. This is only 11.5% alcohol and has great acidity, a pH of three and seven grams of acidity after full malolactic. Sixty-five percent of the volume matured in 2,500-liter oval oak vats and the rest in 228-liter barriques. This is sharp, vertical, mineral and austere, a white made with rocks—it's pure rock juice (think Vatan or Bageiras), the most mineral of the whites they make. It has some notes of chamomile and combines power and elegance. This is a groundbreaking, world-class white, way better than previous vintages. And it's made from a variety that people say is second class... second class to none! 9,700 bottles produced. It's the largest production to date, and it was bottled in January 2020.

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Pear and dried apple aromas are matched to some lime and spice notes. Very rounded with a fullish feel, spicy pear and dried apple flavours are underscored by vibrant acidity. Some quince characters making an appearance on the dry finish. Lingering aftertaste of spicy pear, apple and quince.

2020 Suertes del Marques Trenzado Blanco
    Tenerife, SPAIN
    $54. 99

    $659.88 Dozen

Suertes is located on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands at the northern end in the Valle de La Orotova. The family have been farming vines for over 40 years but Suertes del Marques began in 2006. Owner Jonatan Garcia Lima runs the property and is part of a growing breed of intensely passionate young Spanish producers capitalising on the heritage vines and the volcanic soils to speak through his eloquent, mineral driven wines. Recently he has started working with talented young winemaker Luis Seabra. The estate has some incredibly old, low-yielding vines that produces wines with freshness, balance, purity of fruit, minerality and authentic terroir character.

The white 2020 Trenzado was produced with Listán Blanco (and 2% Torrontés Volcánico) grapes from six vineyards from local growers in the western part of the valley on poor volcanic soils harvested even earlier than ever (every year seems to be a record!). It fermented in 2,000-, 2,500- and 4,500-liter oak foudres and some 15% used 500-liter oak barrels, where it matured for 10 months. It's lower in alcohol, 12%, and has a low pH of 3.07 and 6.44 grams of acidity. Since 2016, the wine is different from the Vidonia because it's selected by soils; here, all are from the west of the Orotava Valley, closer to Los Realejos, where the soils are poorer and the wines tend to reduction. Putting your nose in the glass is like smelling a volcano, smoky and leesy. The palate is serious, fresh and harmonious, pungent, with tasty, almost salty notes. There is no heat at all in the wine, and the quality is great—the same as before but with more production. It should develop nicely in bottle. 29,000 bottles were produced, a big jump in volume. It was bottled in August 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

Listán Blanco. Named after the local trenzado plaited vine-training technique.
Very reduced nose – so reduced one assumes it’s intentional! Probably a love or loathe wine. It does have fruit and enormous marine influence with, presumably, the influence of the volcano towering overhead. Decidedly interesting though it’s actually quite painful on the tongue! Perhaps because of the acidity? Drink 2021-2025.

2020 Telmo Rodriguez MR Mountain Wine Moscatel (500ml)
    Malaga, SPAIN
    $59. 99

    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%

Málaga Mountain Wines are a very nearly forgotten style, grown on very steep schist slopes at an altitude of 500-1000m. The Moscatel grapes (Muscat of Alexandria) are grown and harvested from incredibly old bush vines at optimum ripeness, without any rot. Once picked, the grapes are dried for one week on drying racks to become partially raisined, before being pressed to stainless tank for fermentation.

The sweet white 2020 MR comes from a warm, dry and early vintage marked by a heat wave at the end of July. They believe 2020 is a very good year for sweet wines. This has 13.5% alcohol and 143 grams of sugar. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats, where it matured for 10 months. It's perfumed, expressive and with the character of Molino Real, with less complexity, with the notes of bay leaf and condensed milk, balanced, rich, expressive and long, not too sweet. 10,598 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

2018 was the contrary of 2017, cooler, wet and with a very late cycle, and harvest staggered between end of August and mid October, which resulted in a fresher and more expressive 2018 MR with very good pH and acidity readings and 13.5% alcohol while retaining some 135 grams of sugar, similar parameters as the 2013. It had a spontaneous fermentation in small stainless steel vats until it stopped and was kept in stainless steel for 10 months before bottling. This is a lot more complete and complex than the 2017; it's balanced, which is very important, and it keeps the freshness, which is key in all wines but a lot more important in sweet wines. 9,536 half-liter bottles were filled in May 2019. Drink 2020 - 2025.

The 2018 Terroir Históric Blanc is a constant blend of 75% Garnacha Blanca and 25% Macabeo fermented with some skin contact that gives it a golden color, a nose of quince and peach kernel and a fine tannic sensation on the palate. It has lots of herbs and spices and feels a little lighter (the skin contact has been reduced) with good freshness; it's powerful yet light on its feet and very tasty. 7,000 bottles produced.
