Although Malbec and Mendoza are the best known names in Argentine winemaking, Torrontés is taking centre stage a few hundred miles to the northwest, in the Cafayate region of Salta. It is believed that varietal was brought to the country by Spanish Jesuits in the 18th century. Torrontés is found in the world’s highest vineyards, resting at 5,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level in Argentina. The high altitude growing conditions translate beautifully to bright floral aromas and delightfully crisp acidity in the wine.
Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Intense lime zest and Granny Smith apple scents infused with fresh herbs leap from the glass followed by some lychee and saline mineral like notes. Scrumptious lime, green apple and lychee flavours engulf the mouth with infusions of fresh herbs and flinty mineral characters adding further nuance. Excellent concentration with a dry finish and crunchy acidity leading into a long zesty aftertaste.

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America. Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added, while a conversation between friends has turned into a partnership with esteemed Burgundian Chardonnay producer Jean-Marc Roulot joining Piero in Patagonia in planting, farming, and vinification of Chardonnay at Chacra.

Located in the Rio Negro Valley in northern Patagonia, Argentina, Bodega Chacra is comprised of 24 hectares of vineyards planted mainly to Pinot Noir, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. Piero also values responsible farming as demonstrated by his grandfather at Sassicaia, and each of the vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. After hand harvesting, the fruit is handled the gentlest way possible, with movements transferred by gravity, fermentation occurring in concrete, minimal new oak usage, and no fining or filtration at bottling. Piero's aim is to retain greater purity and transparency, and it's this ability for his wines to so clearly express their origin that's so engaging with Chacra wines. It's also one of the key attributes that only the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across the globe are able to achieve.

Mainque is a collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot. Mainque Chardonnay comes from 3 parcels of land with a range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

Such a flinty nose that delivers a full package of minerality. Quarry, chalk, gun powder and lime. The nose really speaks to you. Creamy and textured on the palate with bright but chiselled acidity and real tension. One of the best Mainque’s ever? Chacra’s answer to fine Chablis. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Quiet, flinty, a little sea spray and white flower perfume. Bright, tight, a fine chalky texture, ripe lemon/lime and white peach, a little honeycomb, wax and cashew, but still tense and kind of electric. Length is excellent. Great drinking and a beautiful refined expression of Chardonnay. Touch and go for 96 points really. Drink 2023 - 2030+.

This is probably the finest answer to Puligny or Meursault in Argentina and it will be hard to pass by. Beautiful brioche notes give a fine creaminess with mineral, fine reduction, beeswax and a hint of white sesame to the lemon curd. Extremely textured and tense on the palate with fresh, medium acidity and a long, long finish. This is all about texture and purity. Also intellectual. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.

The citrus 2019 Torrontés is expressive and very aromatic with a combination of orange blossom and spices. It has a serious, dry palate, with pungent flavors, very nice balance and a serious finish that is long and dry, with just a faint bitter twist. This is light-years ahead of the super ripe and sweet versions of the grape that many produced in the past and were difficult to drink. This has high drinkability and should do well with a good range of foods. Drink 2019-2021.

The cooler 2018 resulted in 15% lower average temperatures in the Aconcagua Costa zone. The 2018 Chardonnay Aconcagua Costa was produced with grapes that saw a slow ripening to full flavors while keeping moderate alcohol and very high levels of acidity. The vineyards are 12 kilometers away from the Pacific Ocean and have a strong marine influence. It fermented with native yeasts in oak barrels, with only 40% of the wine going through malolactic fermentation. It matured in second and third use French oak barrels for 11 months. It's very clean, with a mixture if citrus, herbs and flowers, and it's aromatic without excess, with a medium to full-bodied palate with some restraint but not lacking volume. There is nice balance and freshness, and it ends with a salty twist. Drink 2020-2024.

Fermentation took place in French oak barrels, 6% of which were new with the balance in second and third use barrels. A portion of the wine remained on its lees for 10 months to enhance the wines textural qualities and add complexity. 35% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. ‘Arboleda’s Chardonnays have excelled delivering intense flavours and rich textures. ’

The 2021 Mainqué Chardonnay is the second white here, produced by Jean-Marc Roulot from 40-year-old ungrafted vines in Mainqué in the Lunita property (where they regrafted the vines to Chardonnay), where they work with cover crops, no chemicals and bees. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, 70% in French oak barrels and 10% each in clay amphorae, concrete egg and stainless steel, and it matured for nine months, 70% in barrel and 10% each in concrete and stainless steel. It has the precision and purity of Roulot, which to a certain extent is the result of thorough work with the press. "He sent us the press program," Piero told me. "And we now have two presses. We are learning." When I thought about what was in common between the reds and the whites, I came up with three words: precision, purity and elegance. It has notes of white flowers and a touch of fennel and other aromatic herbs. It was harvested early in the morning and in the season, and the wine is light and refreshing, ethereal, weightless and with purity and precision. It's a delight! 24,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

White peach. white flowers, honey almond, ripe lemon, a subtle sort of sea breeze thing happening (though don’t mind me). It’s cool, glossy, almond nougat, saline too, with a fine dusty texture, a little white pepper and spice, lemon oil with a refreshing subtle citrus peel and watermelon rind bitterness on a long finish. Delightful wine. Graceful, and very at ease with itself. Drink 2022 - 2029+.

    2020 Bodega Chacra Chardonnay
    Patagonia, ARGENTINA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America.

Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in concrete, transferred by gravity and treated in the gentlest way possible without fining or filtration in order to produce wines with transparency.

Done in collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot, Chacra Chardonnay is produced from 40 year old vines in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

    Other Reviews....
There’s real direction and clarity to this white with sliced dried apples, crushed stones and minerals on the nose, as well as hints of biscuit and praline. Some honeysuckle and lemon-grass undertones, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and lively with a line of fresh acidity running through the palate, providing energy and depth. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Drinkable now, but much better in three to four years. Try after 2023.

“Made with Jean-Marc Roulot, from 40 year old vines in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. 9 month in 1st use French oak barrels for 15% and 2nd and 3rd use French oak barrels for 85%”
From the cold climes of Patagonia, and given I’ve not reviewed much Chardonnay for a while, I was feeling sorry for our own JH. Chacra is the word for a small farm, as opposed to your Chakra, which sometimes, apparently, needs alignment as they are a little vague and wobbly.
Cool feel here, with mint and fennel, a little nougat gloss, and some cinnamon spice and struck match, green pear and citrus. There’s a sort of preserved lemon bitterness in with fine chalky grip, a honey and white flower perfume, and a tight yet creamy finish of excellent length. Delicate, but firm in character. Drink 2022 - 2028+.

Very flinty and minerally on the nose with some aniseed and sliced green-apple aromas that follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with a creamy texture and pretty apple, citrus and nougat flavors. Creamy and long. Subtle and fine. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Very drinkable now, but will improve.

“Made with Jean-Marc Roulot, 3 parcels with varying range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. With early picking, the wines are fermented and aged for 10 months in barrels from Roulot’s domaine in Meursault (30% in concrete eggs, 10% for 9 months in 1st use, 60 % in 2 & 3rd use).” Patagonia Chardonnay here, though likely not from the North Face. I tried the 2018 vintage of this wine and its big sister back in February 2020, and preferred this one at the time for its energy and charm, and now we are on to the 2020 vintage, which I guess was sitting happily on the vine back then.
It’s glossy and gently creamy, but has plenty of flinty energy, cashew and green melon, with a lemon peel and melon rind bitterness, subtle spiced cinnamon oak, almost a green olive flavour and saline character, a whisper of struck match, and a tight preserved lemon finish of fine length. Sophisticated. Lovely to drink. Drink 2021 - 2026+.

The 2014 Chardonnay is a blend of three vineyards. The vineyards are divided into lots that are harvested at different times: Agrelo at 3,117 foot elevation, Villa Bastías at 3,675 foot elevation and Gualtallary at 4,757 foot elevation. Each vineyard is vinified differently and aged separately. The wines are blended at the end before bottling. The nose is subtly oaked with white fruit and floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and has very nice acidity which makes the wine not only fresher, but also longer and more mineral. This is the freshest of all the vintages of this Chardonnay, and the change in vineyards is really noticeable. Super! Drink 2015-2019.

The nose exhibits aromas of ripe peaches and apricots with a light honeycomb overlay followed by some subtle cashew and spicy citrus notes.
