Although Malbec and Mendoza are the best known names in Argentine winemaking, Torrontés is taking centre stage a few hundred miles to the northwest, in the Cafayate region of Salta. It is believed that varietal was brought to the country by Spanish Jesuits in the 18th century. Torrontés is found in the world’s highest vineyards, resting at 5,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level in Argentina. The high altitude growing conditions translate beautifully to bright floral aromas and delightfully crisp acidity in the wine.
Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Intense lime zest and Granny Smith apple scents infused with fresh herbs leap from the glass followed by some lychee and saline mineral like notes. Scrumptious lime, green apple and lychee flavours engulf the mouth with infusions of fresh herbs and flinty mineral characters adding further nuance. Many experts consider Chateau Haut Bergeron to be the best of the non classified Sauternes. Part of the secret of the success of Robert Lamothes and his sons Patrick and Herue is the terroir. The 28 hectare vineyard is split on such a way, that part of the vines are in Barsac, (next to Chateau Climens), part are at Preignac and a large slice next to Chateau d’Yquem. At one stage the label used to boast this fact, with the words 'CONTIGU d’YQUEM'. Son, Herue is a dedicated and passionate winemaker who ages wine in 25% to 50% new oak casks. The exact percentage depends upon the vintage conditions. The 2020 vintage comes replete with special packaging to celebrate 200 years of the Lamothe family being vignerons.
Brilliant pale gold core with golden tinged edges. Potent honey drenched ripe peach and apricot aromas mix with marmalade, dried pineapple and spice notes. Rich and lusciously textured, the palate features honeyed peach and apricot flavours alongside sweet ripe pineapple, marmalade and candied citrus characters. Outstanding power and depth finishing very long with ample freshness and mouth feel.

Pale gold in color, the 2020 Haut-Bergeron has a seductive nose of honey-drizzled peaches, baked pineapple and candied ginger, plus hints of coriander seed and candle wax. Bright golden straw colour with a pale straw hue. A shade more restrained than both the 2018 and 2019 vintages, the nose opens up to reveal peach, citrus and apricot aromas which have a honeyed overlay. Also making an appearance are hints of marmalade and spice. The most elegant of the trio, coating the palate are fresh apricot and peach fruits which sit over a honeyed citrus back drop. Some pineapple, lemon and spice characters linger on the back half which is enlivened by fresh acidity. Long, luscious conclusion.

The 2017 Haut-Bergeron is gorgeous. Apricot, honey, orange confit, crême brulée, wild flowers and mint are all beautifully delineated in this striking, racy, opulent Sauternes. In the glass, the 2017 is beautifully textured and lush, yet it retains terrific freshness to balance things out. This Haut-Bergeron shows a more exotic, burnished flavor profile than many other wines. Drink it over the next decade or so. Drink 2022-2032.

Distinct honeyed botrytis affected scents of peach and apricot waft out of the glass mixing with dried pineapple and hints of spicy citrus along the way. Decadently rich and sweet with a thick viscous texture, flavours of honey, peach and apricot show terrific intensity with honeycomb, pineapple and delicate spice also chiming in. Domaine Pichot is a 24Ha family estate in Vouvray on the right bank of the Loire, where vignerons dedicate their time to the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, locally coined ‘Pineau de la Loire’, to produce dry, sweet and sparkling whites. The Coteau de la Biche is the only vineyard of the estate, planted on silex layered over limestone slopes. It is the spot of choice to make dry whites of great class, displaying the richness of ripe Chenin with a minerality that can rival that of the grandest Chablis. Feudo Montoni enjoys a long history in the Valledolmo region of central western Sicily.  Their cellars are housed in the baglio (typical Sicilian court square building) built by the noble Arogenese family in 1469.  The property was purchased by current owner and winemaker Fabio Sireci’s grandfather Rosario in the late 1800s.
This Catarratto comes from the ‘Masso’ cru, which is one of the highest vineyards on the Feudo Montoni Estate at 700m and named because of its rocky-sandy soil. The vines are aged between 55 and 60 years old but have been grafted onto very old bush vines producing fruit that’s dense and full flavoured. This iron rich soil contributes to a wine that is intensely fresh and mineral. After concrete fermentation, the wine is kept on lees for 6 months with some batonnage before being bottled.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a greenish glimmer to the edges and a watery hue. Streaming from the glass are pronounced lime and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs and wet slate followed by some pear and flinty mineral notes. Boasting terrific flavour intensity, fresh lime, green apple and pear fruits are delivered with mouth watering tension. Infusions of fresh herbs, wet slate, mineral and faint almond characters are also present. Finishes dry and crisp with energized acidity and a long super scrumptious aftertaste.

Ranked No. 10 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines of 2023

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels. Brilliant water like coloured core with a greenish tinged outskirts. Jumping out of the glass are pungent aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and lime followed by some green apple, herbaceous grassy characters and mineral notes. On the palate mouth watering passionfruit, gooseberry, green apple and lime fruits are delivered with superb concentration and drive. Subtle herbaceous grassy and mineral characters lurk underneath. Excellent textural feel finishing dry with crisp acidity and a long scrumptious aftertaste.

With 25 years at Cloudy Bay, Kevin Judd was key to the global renown of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Today his Greywacke wines (particularly the Wild Sauvignon) are standard bearers in their own right. This elegant, textural vintage brims with zippy pineapple sorbet, elderflower blossom and green mango freshness, with bracing lime acidity and a creamy passionfruit curd finish. Drink 2023-2027.

    2020 Keller Gruner Silvaner Trocken

    $479.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%

It would be no exaggeration to say Weingut Keller consistently produce the finest dry Rieslings in the world, a fact proven year after year since Klaus-Peter Keller took over the reins from his father in 2001. Along with his wife Julia, Klaus-Peter has continued to prioritise the quality of dry wine produced at the estate, and these are now some of the most sought after and collected wines on the planet.

Julia and Klaus-Peter Keller also take their Silvaner very seriously where it’s given the royal treatment, hand-picked, basket-pressed and fermented on its lees. As a consequence it’s powerful and textured, rounder than Riesling, and shows a complex richness with a stony minerality.

    Other Reviews....
Greenhouse-like leafiness and cooling green herbs dominate on the nose. These notes then compliment juicy pear fruit on a polished and buoyant mid-palate. The lingering finish is correspondingly wafting, cooling and consummately refreshing while introducing a decided note of chalk. (There’s barely 12% alcohol here.) Incidentally, I owe my luck in being able to taste this to there having been an unsellable bottle with a chipped lip. I was unable to taste the “Feuervogel” version of Silvaner from this vintage. Production is very small, and nowadays, there is nearly as heated a demand as there is for Keller’s Riesling Grosse Gewächse. “Inside of two weeks,” says Keller, “all of our Silvaner is sold out.” But there’s exciting news in this department. Beginning in 2021, there will be a bottling from 60-year-old vines high up by the church in Neu-Bamberg (in the “Rheinhessen Switzerland” familiar from wines of Wagner-Stempel). “You have a layered combination of porphyry and chalk there that may be the geological ideal for Silvaner,” enthuses Keller, “with really striking phenolics. One of our fellow workers brought this parcel to our attention. And because it’s Silvaner, it had been overlooked.” Drink 2021-2026.

Nekeas was established by a number of generational growers in the late 1980’s. Hit by hard times, low grape prices and high labour costs they were forced to pull up most of most of their vines during the 1960’s. However, with winemaking still flowing through their veins a group of landholders made the decision to pool some of their resources, embarking on a project to plant new vineyards and build a modern production facility.
Fruit for the ‘El Rincon’ Chardonnay is sourced from vineyards with an elevation of 600-650m (one of the highest, coolest wine corners of Spain with huge diurnal temperature swings). Fermentation is spontaneous in top quality French oak followed by three months of aging on fine lees.
Bright pale straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted ripe peach, apricot and honeycomb aromas fill the nostrils followed by some crème brulee and subtle toasty oak notes. Rich, creamy textured and mouth filling the palate features a concentrated flavour profile of ripe peaches, apricot and honeycomb over crème brulee, toasty oak and spicy nougat characters. The Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village. Made mostly from Garganega grapes with the inclusion of 15% Trebbiano di Soave.
Bright pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lightly spiced pear and red apple scents sail from the glass followed by some lime and slatey mineral notes. Delicious pear, red apple and lime fruits are energised by racy mineral laced acidity and infusions of fresh herbs. Excellent intensity with a river stone like mouth feel finishing dry and crisp. Concludes with a lingering stony mineral element on the long bristling aftertaste.

Brothers Dario, the oenologist and Andrea, the agronomist, are responsible for more than 70ha of proprietary vineyards across both volcanic and limestone sites, while championing the indigenous varieties, Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. Telltale aromas of white pepper, jasmine and ripe orchard fruit accents. While this is a blend from a litany of sites, each is vinified separately before blending. A fine smoky plume across an effortless, tenacious finish. A delicious, easygoing and highly fidelitous expression of the region. Drink or hold.

Although Malbec and Mendoza are the best known names in Argentine winemaking, Torrontés is taking center stage a few hundred miles to the northwest, in the Cafayate region of Salta.
Brilliant almost water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Jumping out of the glass are pear, rose water and lychee like aromatics followed by mango and spicy lime notes. Delicious lychee, mango and lime fruits show terrific intensity over a flinty mineral back drop. Finishes dry and spicy with crisp acidity. The aftertaste long and delightfully refreshing.

    Other Reviews…..
The citrus 2019 Torrontés is expressive and very aromatic with a combination of orange blossom and spices. It has a serious, dry palate, with pungent flavors, very nice balance and a serious finish that is long and dry, with just a faint bitter twist. This is light-years ahead of the super ripe and sweet versions of the grape that many produced in the past and were difficult to drink. This has high drinkability and should do well with a good range of foods. Drink 2019-2021.
