The 2019 Riesling/Grüner Veltliner is rather lovely in a serious way. While you might think the combination of these two varieties would create a light, linear style, this is quite the opposite with its rich, savory, dense core of fruit. It’s dry, fresh and firm, with a satisfying bit of grunt on the long, grippy finish. You can expect lingering layers of apple, citrus and spice flavors, but the joy of this wine is truly in its multifaceted textural elements. It continues to improve year on year. Drink 2022 - 2029.

If you’d like to taste Sauvignon Blanc in its modern day glory, look no further. The Marlborough sunshine and pinpoint precision in the vineyard and winery is all found here. Sourced from estate fruit in the Wairau Valley you’ll find star fruit, passion blossom, juicy pineapple and guava. The abundance of fruit continues on the palate with an electric line of acidity and sea spray finish. The dryness of the wine takes elegance to another dimension. Sith purity and drive, this is a triumph of a vintage and its magic is captured in the bottle. Drink now with raw scallop ceviche.

    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Stelvin

Commencing with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture ensures that the fruit arrives at the winery as pure as can be, while the entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands-off winemaking: gravity flow; indigenous yeasts and malolactic; an avoidance of fining and filtration; all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of the unique vineyards.

Felton Road manages four properties covering 34 hectares in the Bannockburn subregion of Central Otago. Block 6, located on a mild north-facing slope within The Elms vineyard, was planted in 1993.

Ranked No. 10 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines of 2023

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels. Brilliant water like coloured core with a greenish tinged outskirts. Jumping out of the glass are pungent aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and lime followed by some green apple, herbaceous grassy characters and mineral notes. On the palate mouth watering passionfruit, gooseberry, green apple and lime fruits are delivered with superb concentration and drive. Subtle herbaceous grassy and mineral characters lurk underneath. Excellent textural feel finishing dry with crisp acidity and a long scrumptious aftertaste.

Today his Greywacke wines (particularly the Wild Sauvignon) are standard bearers in their own right. The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouthfilling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It's a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It's intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate's Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent. Recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

The 2022 Chardonnay Hunting Hill is an impressive, focused style. It has a sense of energy, being almost buoyant with the movement of a skimming stone across your palate. There's a powerful core of fruit here and it has plenty of substance within its no-more-than medium-bodied core before kerpow! It fires home with an almost spicy kick. Clever oak use, reminiscent of toasted nuts, meets restrained flavors of lemon and lime bitter and nectarine fruit. A wine that's still in its cocoon so give it time. It may even have the edge of Maté's... Big call. Drink 2024-2035.

Hiro Kusuda was born in Tokyo where he worked as a lawyer before a stint in Australia. Along the way his love affair with wine and winemaking grew, and eventually he set off to complete his studies at Geisenheim in Germany before moving to Martinborough in New Zealand to make hand crafted Pinot Noir. Kusuda is known for attention to detail, to the point that each berry is picked individually at harvest by his Japanese friends that fly out each year to assist. Naturally this precision comes at a cost, in particular the miniscule volumes produced, and as such stocks are extremely limited.

The fruit for this wine was machine harvested at night or in the cool of the morning and immediately crushed and pressed. The juice was then fermented with a variety of aromatic yeast strains in stainless steel tanks - the sole aim being to reflect and preserve the flavours and aromas grown in the vineyard. 5% of the juice was fermented with a non-saccharomyces yeast and 1% was barrel fermented. After fermentation, the wine was kept in contact with the lees for three months. This classic technique enhances creaminess and integrates flavours.

This has a softness and easy appeal. Sweet citrus meets red apple joins nougat, ginger lemon honey tea and cashew. Lots of fragrance, good, juicy and slick texture with a pleasing, talc-like mineral finish and great extension of flavour. From a family who have been managing vineyards in Marlborough since the 1970's, after a significant stint at Fromm winery, ending as General Manager, Will Hoare and his wife Rachel decided to venture out on their own to produce wine from the incredible vineyards they had access to. For this wine fruit was sourced from a block in the central Wairau plains of Marlborough planted entirely with the Mendoza clone around the mid 1980’s. Originally a riverbed, this block is naturally warm during the day, as well as at night, thanks to the radiating effect of the exposed greywacke rock lying beneath the vines. The rock radiates heat up into the canopy, making this vineyard an ideal site for ripening Chardonnay.

A sublime, world class Marlborough Chardonnay.

Fermented with wild yeast in 10% new oak followed by 13 months maturation on full lees that is stirred each month. Brilliant pale straw colour with straw coloured edges and a watery hue. Rich, mouthfilling and opulent, peach, honeycomb, ripe nectarine and cashew flavours engulf every corner of the palate and are complimented by crème brulee, biscuity nougat and spice characters. Finishes with a citrusy freshness which counterpoints an almost creamy like texture.
