The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. Saline and crystalline on the first palate, this is a pure, fresh and concentrated but also lush and vitalizing Riesling with a pure, enormously saline and tensioned finish with fine tannin grip. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2050.

So deep, it feels like it’s pulling you in the direction of the center of the earth! Yet, another side of the wine seems to float above the world. Radically mineral finish that leaves you in no doubt about this great dry riesling’s future! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a clear, pure, fresh, saline and really classic Riesling bouquet that is clearly influenced by iron notes as well as the ripe and concentrated Riesling berry. Saline and finessed on the palate, this is a tightly structured pure and tensioned dry Riesling with lots of salinity but also ripe and fleshy fruit with fine tannins, both representing a warm, ripe vintage. It is very long and saline on the pure and youthful finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

If you’re a Barolo fan, then here’s a dry riesling for you! The first impression is silky and suave, but then the massive structure - including tons of fine tannin - asserts itself. The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

The 2019 Reiterpfad-Hofstück GG is still slightly reductive, opening to a precise and flinty-scented bouquet with tropical fruit aromas and generous ripeness and warmth but also precision. The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

A joint venture between Theresa Breuer, Weingut Bernhard Mehrlein from Oestrich-Winkel and Georg Breuer cellarmaster Markus Lundén. Sourced from three to four different villages around the region to bring diversity, the fruit is whole bunch pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel for approximately 8 months.
Brilliant water like core with a distinct tinge of green to the edges. Aromas of lime, pear and red apple are married to hints of honeysuckle and slatey mineral notes. Scrumptious lime, red apple and subtle orange blossom infusions overlay a crunchy back drop of chalky lemon and wet slate characters. Zippy acidity finishing dry, long and mouth watering. An excellent first up effort from this trio.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2020er Marienburg Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from fruit picked at 96° Oechsle from a selection of partially (10%) botrytized fruit and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely backward and almost non-saying nose at first and the wine takes a while before revealing some faint scents of pear, melon, lemon zest, smoke, and a hint of whipped cream. However, it proves remarkably alluring on the palate where finely chiseled fruity and mineral flavors are beautifully wrapped into ripe yet zesty acidity. The finish is beautifully playful, deep, multi-layered, and refined. This modern-day equivalent of a clean Auslese GK from the 1990s is a true winner. Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. It’s not easy to prise apart the complex fragrance of the Marienburg Spätlese, suffice to say that herbal and mineral elements shape the first impression, with fine floral and fruity notes demanding a little more olfactory application. The taste of crunchy apple and zesty citrus fruit gets the juices flowing, sweet lemony acidity prolongs the sensory stimulation. More classic than avant-garde, traditionalists deserve to be pleased too.

White peach, quince and red raspberry give an impression on the nose and the creamy, polished palate of both jellied and fresh fruits. An influx of lime serves for welcome, animating brightness, and the penetratingly sustained, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish is transparent to wet stone, setting up a shimmering fruit–mineral exchange.

Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

Aged on the full lees for 24 months, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben offers a clear, deep, elegant and flinty bouquet with nutty sur lie and concentrated fruit aromas with lemony nuances. Crystalline, refined yet also intense and complex on the palate, the 2017 Laychen Réserve from the original Sonnenuhr combines intensity and texture with finesse, salinity and delicate lemon notes, and it paves the palate with fine tannins and lush, slowly maturing fruit. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. 2,450 bottles made. To be released in March 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

A touch of beeswax and dried lemon peel flickers on the shy nose of 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. It was harvested in the Laychen parcel from ancient vines of up to 130 years of age. More air intensifies these notions that continue right through onto the palate. The body is concentrated, sinuous, elegant and comes with a flavor suggesting lemon-scented stearin, imbued with salty notions and lovely highlights of ripe, juicy lemon. The result is a wine that seemingly draws you down into stony depth. Vivid, smooth, poised, juicy and mellow, despite the bright lemon notes. Elixir-like. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

What a beautiful nose of ripe peach and toasted baguette this creamy and concentrated Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG has! I love the very sensual way that the mineral acidity is woven into the ample body of this irresistible wine that defies the regular descriptors for dry Mosel riesling with its succulence. Drink or hold.

Due the rich, red volcanic soils, Urziger Wurzgarten produces wines unlike any other in the region. As the name would suggest, expect an exotic and spice laden Riesling that leans more towards tropical fruit flavours than the neighbouring vineyards.

The 2017 Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichler Réserve Alte Reben is deep and noble on the intense yet pure, refined and elegant nose that offers a subtle bouquet with elegant sur lie and ripe (mirabelle) fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round on the palate, with nutty notes, this is a very fine, vital and elegant Würzgarten with frisky, saline acidity that leads to a very elegant, intense and juicy, saline and finely bitter finish. This is a gorgeous Riesling from the Würzgarten, and it will be released in March 2023. Only 2,481 bottles made. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Russet pear peel and ripe, golden pear juice appear first on the nose of the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. The palate has a wonderfully light texture and yet is dense with flavor and a smooth richness suggesting dried lemon peel, pear peel, subtle wax and tingling notions reminiscent of spiced apple. The finish is poised, extended, absolutely elegant and defined by ripe lemon freshness. Compact, concentrated, serene. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

What a beautiful combination of toastiness, candied citrus and pineapple plus notes of dried strawberry and allspice this stunning Wurzgarten GG has. Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

The 2017 Erdener Prälat Réserve Alte Reben is pure, fine and flinty on the beautifully aromatic nose that reveals tropical fruit aromas intertwined with delicate slate tones and remains utterly refined. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a fruity, saline and sustainable, very intense and stimulating Prälat with gorgeous hedonistic features. The wine is enormously aromatic and fruity, with mango and peach aromas and everything that's yellow and lush, but it also has this superb finesse of the red slate in the Prälat and reflects its sunny exposition adjacent to the riverside. 3,743 bottles filled. 12.5% stated alcohol. The nose of the 2017 Riesling Erdener Prälat Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve takes some swirling but the Erdener Prälat comes alive with gentle hints of spiced orange: think subtle clove and Navel peel joined by notions of dried lemon rind. The texture is serene, smooth, utterly compact and filled with flavors of wax, lemon and slightly bitter, dried lemon zest that seems to be dissolved in subtle oiliness. A wonderful sensation on the palate, utterly bright, deeply salty and effortlessly elegant. Wow. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Enormously dense nose of mango and papaya. Gigantic concentration and power for a German dry riesling this inhabits its own habitat on Planet Mosel. Brain-rattling intensity and energy at the moment, so we recommend decanting and using large glasses. Better still, give this a few more years in the bottle. Either way this should silence any doubters about this category. Drink or hold.

An exquisitely creamy sense of lemon pervades the nose of the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben, almost as of lemon posset. With more air, notions of tangerine peel appear with much aromatic appeal. The palate reinforces all this wonderful zestiness shimmering with ripe Amalfi lemon and tangerine. Cool and herbal, but well-balanced and elegant this 2021 riesling GG has an appealing silkiness in spite of the lemony acidity. The positive tannins build at the long, structured finish. From Permian rhyolite, the 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben opens up into a nose making you believe that you can smell texture because this sports wonderful notes of russet pear peel. Fairly straightforward fragrance of fresh apple, pear and citrus aromas. The fruit is fresh and vibrant on the palate and well supported by citrusy acidity as well as a marked spicy piquancy. Starts off deceptively light on the palate, but is beginning to show greater depth as the flavour goes on. Spice is another trademark of Ernie’s Grosse Gewächse, and the Sonnenuhr has plenty. The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample ready for bottling proves smoky and flinty at first before it reveals its very refined and finely aromatic nose of tangerine, vineyard peach, Conference pear, dried white flowers, and almond. The wine is delicately juicy and elegant on the smooth rather than bone-dry palate. The finish manages to bring the right amount of freshness as zesty elements and spices kick in. A hint of tartness in the after-taste still needs to integrate before this beautiful wine will show its best. Drink 2025-2035.

In reviewing the “regular” vintage 2015 Erdener Prälat Reserve, I looked forward comparing the eventual Reserve bottling, and expressed “my hunch ... that the latter will prove not just more expressive in its early years but also longer-lived.” Well, that time is here, and at least in terms of expressiveness, this tasting unfortunately failed to confirm my hunch. This Reserve appears less successful than the “regular” Grosses Gewächs in reflecting Loosen and Schug’s determination (beginning with 2004) to capture an animation and dynamic exchange of flavors in all of their Prälat bottlings that were missing when the site was getting picked later and based more on achieving high must weight. The nose here shows an oxidative tendency that I haven’t noted in other Loosen Reserve bottlings, though in itself, I don’t consider that a problem. Prickly notes of lemon and kumquat zests, along with an incisive note of white pepper, are very much in keeping with how the “regular” Grosses Gewächs performed in its youth. But smoky black tea and Latakia tobacco, along with suggesions of wet stone, moss and lichen, take the nose here to a new level of complexity. So far, so good – very good, in fact. Furthermore, the midpalate comes off as slightly slimmer as well as more texturally refined than that of the regular bottling, which might in part be a function of alcohol having been blown off by an additional year in cask, but also and in large part of lees buffering. It’s the finish of this Reserve – though impressive in its sheer persistence – that I find a letdown. A slightly dank alkaline and mossy impression seems to be all that remains of those elements that the nose led one to anticipate, and there is a sense of opacity, with only modest primary juiciness. “This is just Prälat being Prälat,” insisted Loosen, “and it needs time to come back.” As for longevity, that must obviously also remain an open question. Drink 2022 - 2026.

It offers a captivatingly aromatic and smoky nose of lime, pineapple, prune, spices, herbs, a hint of camphor, licorice, and tar. The wine is very compact and has great dry extract, but also a smoother and softer side on the palate as ripe and even exotic fruits join the party. The finish is superbly long and structured, with a touch of power in the background. This is already very impressive but has clearly upside potential as it will gain finesse over the years. Still rather closed on the nose this has both seductive peachy fruit and graceful acidity on the palate. A seamless harmony and the finish is long and refined! Better from 2018 through 2035.

The 2016er Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG is made from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. The wine develops a great nose of mirabelle, tangerine, brown sugar, mint, flowers, whipped cream, and fine spices. The wine proves rather firm and structured on the palate and leaves a fully spicy feel in the long finish. This is nicely made in a fruity and elegantly light style. Drink 2021-2031.

Apple and white peach are strongly marked by the piquancy of their seeds and pits but fortunately preserve a modicum of primary juiciness. There is a greater sense of stuffing and fullness here than in other Loosen 2016 Grosse Gewächse, but less animation or sense of detail. The bitter side of vanilla bean points toward the Einzellage of origin, and there is a prominent undertone of wet stone in the seriously sustained finish. But, apropos of “serious,” don’t look to this wine for charm! Like past installments, the 2016 issues principally from vines planted in 1911 in an unconstructed portion of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage known as Laychen.” Loosen maintains that a focal-point location, combined with the abundance of finely morcellated slate from which it gets its name, makes Laychen the site in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with the finest potential, which he finds already reflected in the present wine. I can’t identify here the surplus of “finesse” or “elegance” – vis-à-vis, say, the corresponding Treppchen, Würzgarten or Himmelreich – that Loosen as well as some of my fellow critics typically perceive in his Grosse Gewächse from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. I tasted this one late in July 2017, approximately two months ahead of its anticipated bottling date.

Another astonishing 2016 auslese from Dr. Loosen with a great interplay of concentrated fruit and spice. A very fresh, lemony acidity that gives the finish a big kick. Drink from 2020 to 2060.

Animating and vividly bright for an Auslese, this displays an impressive concentration of fresh strawberry and kiwi laced with lime. Honeysuckle adds alluring inner-mouth perfume, and a glossy, subtly creamy texture serves as the perfect foil for the wine’s bracing brightness and infectious juiciness. Where the corresponding Sonnenuhr conveyed an extremely subtle impression of botrytis, here I can scarcely find any such impression – not that I’m complaining! The vibrant finish delivers tingling brightness of citrus, an invigorating crunch of strawberry seeds, wafting florality and a faint slick of quince jelly to accompany its irrepressible fresh fruitiness. This offers a gorgeous nose of almond, pear, candied orange zest, a hint of pineapple, coconut minty herbs and spices. The wine develops a smooth and creamy feel on the palate and leaves a delicately powerful feel of herbs and spices in the long and superbly intense finish. This beautifully baroque expression of Auslese GK is still rather bold and will need a little bit of time to fully develop its inner balance. 2026-2046.

Whether it’s a function of the site or of the level of botrytis, this leaves behind the primary juiciness that characterized the “regular” Loosen Auslesen of the vintage. But it’s lovely nonetheless. Orange and muskmelon are mingled with decadent lily, headily sweet gardenia and musky peony both on the nose and on an expansive, glycerol-rich palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. That perfume, like the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, lingers impressively, if without much animation. (This was bottled shortly after my late July 2017 visit.)

A very exciting 2016 Mosel GG that's still very young, but grabs you by the collar and won't let go. As the name suggests this is a real spice garden and the acidity carves a totally straight path through all these aromas before lifting off in the very long pure finish. Drink through 2040.

Notably deep golden straw. Quite refined, buttoned-up nose. And then a great explosion of spiced sausage on the palate. Very satisfying. No need for food when you have it in the glass! All bases covered. Maybe not for the longest life but lots of interest and pleasure delivered.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this delivers a fascinating combination of coolness and incisiveness by way of greenhouse-like scents of foliage and flowers, seedy kiwi, zesty lime and cress. Glycerol-rich but with underlying firmness, the palate is not at all weighed down by its 12.5% alcohol. This finishes with penetrating, refreshingly juicy persistence and admirable animation, salinity and impingements of cress and crushed offering saliva-inducement and invigoration.

Egon Müller exists at a rare level of fame and respect in the world of wine, widely considered one of the finest producers who is at the pinnacle of quality. Where the likes of Domaine de la Romanee Conti sit at this level in Burgundy, so too Egon Müller in Germany. This is reflected not only with their unrivalled track record of excellence, but also with the prices paid for rare Egon Müller bottles at auction, including some of the most expensive white wines ever sold. Egon Müller is also the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini (First Families of Wine) whose other members include owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion, Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Antinori and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).

The 2021er Riesling Scharzhof is a fruity-styled wine made from the Estate’s holdings in the Saarburger Rausch, the Oberemmeler Rosenberg, the Wiltinger Kupp, and the Wiltinger Braunfels. This white-yellow colored wine offers a stunning nose of citrusy fruits, white peach sorbet, mint, cassis, and smoke. It offers a superbly bright acidity which is beautifully balanced by fruitiness on the palate. The finish is juicy and screams for more: What a great success! The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine with a bright white-yellow color and a stunningly pure nose of white peach, citrusy fruits, white flowers, smoke, and a subtle dash of whipped cream. The wine proves stunningly vibrant on the almost off-dry tasting palate and leaves great notes of fresh herbs and spices in the long finish. The aftertaste is to die for as it proves airy, elegant, precise, and incredibly persistent. What a great success! Even as we get to Spätlese level in the present collection, there is a delightfully cooling aspect to the 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese A.P. #5 Le Gallais, here engendered by pear and honeydew melon laced with brown spices, but also lime, mint and basil. The buoyant midpalate impression is succulent as well as silken, with suggestions of quince preserves and marzipan emphasizing the ripeness and very lightly botrytized nature of the fruit without sacrificing the cooling elements or citric brightness. Somehow the lusciously lingering finish manages to be stimulating yet soothing and caressing. Citrus zest, cinnamon and mace serve for welcome counterpoint, but here is one of those rare instances at this address where I have the impression of slight excess sweetness that needs time to integrate. The “regular” 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett (bearing A.P. #3) leads with quince and peach accented by mint, cress, ginger and lemon, setting up an overall impression of coolness, but also of brightness, with stimulating cut and pungency analogous to that of the corresponding Braune Kupp. In the background is a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. The phenolic concentration here belies a vintage with relatively generous yields even as the efficacious acidity and levity defy preconceptions concerning a year marked by summer heat and drought. The multifaceted finish, transparent to wet stone underpinnings, is tongue-tinglingly vibrant. Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

The 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made from clean fruit and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It immediately captures one’s attention with its superbly fresh and animating nose of lemon, fresh pineapple, herbs, grapefruit, spices, floral elements, cassis, greengage, and vineyard peach. The wine reveals some creamy pear, yellow peach, and nuances of honeyed yellow fruits on the smooth and fruity palate but reveals a more filigreed, zesty, and hauntingly smooth but also smoky side in the finish. The aftertaste is magnificent persistent and full of energy. This outstanding and gorgeous Auslese needs at least a decade to integrate all its elements, but patience will be rewarded. Drink 2030-2060.

Very youthful and expressive, with so much mandarin, white peach, nectarine and honeysuckle, this is a beautiful Spätlese, in which the succulent sweetness is beautifully balanced by the lively, lemony acidity. And beneath all this is a mineral core. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, offers a magnificent refreshing and complex nose of smoke, anise, white flowers, peach, and herbs. The wine develops great fruity and ripe presence on the palate driven by apricot, ripe peach, and even some exotic fruits, all wrapped into honeyed elements. The finish is delicately smooth and sweet. Drink 2030-2060.

The 2020er Juffer Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, offers a gorgeous and beautifully attractive nose of candied grapefruit, orange, fine apricot, almond cream, bergamot, smoke, Conference pear, and herbs, as well as a fine bakery touch from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine is still on the richer side of life at this early stage but already shows great balance and finesse in the smooth yet very animating and filigreed finish. The aftertaste is very precise, sappy, and hugely long. This is a great Spätlese in the making! Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020 Juffer Sonnenuhr GG is excitingly clear, fresh and precise on the nose. Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense and tensioned, finely grippy, long and salty JSU whose energy, precision and freshness is outstanding. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2045.

The 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, offers a complex and multi-layered nose of cassis, greengage, candied grapefruit, orange blossom, and vineyard peach. The wine proves beautifully creamy but also superbly spicy and minty on the palate and leaves a nice sense of lightness and energy in the focused finish. The aftertaste is all about fine spices and smoke. This very subtle and filigreed expression of dry Riesling is a huge success. Drink 2024-2040.

A generous expression of peach and citrus fruit aromas is accompanied by a subtle herbal notion reflecting the action of natural yeast. The flavour opens with a sweet flicker of ripe fruit before a rock-solid minerality, with nuances of graphite and quinine, takes charge of the flavour. A third dimension is added by an almost medicinal expression of spices. Drink 2023 – 2032.

    2020 Georg Breuer Pfaffenwies Riesling
    Rheingau, GERMANY
    $165. 00
    Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pfaffenwies is sourced in the upper and lower plots of the cru, whereas in 2019, it was sourced just in the lower vineyards and the top section as well as the younger middle part went into the Terra Montosa. The bouquet is fascinating in its slatey/flinty purity and lemon-scented intensity with just a hint of oak. Vinified in oak like the Montosa, this is a full-bodied, pure, fresh and mineral Pfaffenwies with power, salt and grip and enormous length and complexity. Power and texture meet grip and salinity here, and although the 2020 is still a baby, it is highly promising. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Full and vibrant red-apple and fresh-herb nose, then a powerful but sleek and tightly wound palate with major minerality. Needs some time to unwind, but excellent structure. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.
