2019 German Riesling

"The 2019 vintage is the best vintage I have ever tasted for German riesling in my four-decade career." - Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

German Riesling drinkers have been blessed in the last few years with outstanding wines being produced from 2015 through to now. 2019 however looks set to trump them all, and will go down as one of the all time great vintages. Writing for JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott calls this the 100 point vintage, and the greatest of his professional career. Stephan Reinhardt of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate says "The 2019 vintage has produced some of the greatest, finest and most energetic Rieslings of the last 20 years". What makes the year so special is the balance of ripe and concentrated fruit, while also displaying immense purity, elegance, and finesse.

The 2019 Reiterpfad-Hofstück GG is still slightly reductive, opening to a precise and flinty-scented bouquet with tropical fruit aromas and generous ripeness and warmth but also precision. On the palate, this is an intense and juicy yet refined and elegant Riesling from Ruppertsberg. The finish is crystalline and pure, with a lingering salty flavor, but also powerful and aromatic.

Ripe yellow grapefruit meets a whole garden of herbs and a small iceberg. A generous but precisely proportioned wine with dark finesse, if that doesn't sound too crazy. Great energy at the bold finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2019 Scharzhofberger Spätlese is brilliant, digitally precise and spicy on the clear, elegant, deep and terroir-typical nose with mango and papaya aromas. Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

Yes, this is a medium-sweet riesling, but the breathtaking spectrum of fruit aromas, from white peach through to mangosteen, renders this almost irrelevant. And this aromatic complexity carries effortlessly the very succulent yet finely etched palate through the lingering, smoky finish.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeous and superbly subtle nose made of elderflower, grapefruit zest, apricot, almond cream, and subtly floral elements. The balance of the wine on the palate is simply stunning. Delicately creamy and incredibly subtle honeyed flavors of fruits are lifted up by some beautifully ripe acidity. The wine leaves a gorgeously airy, yet intense and persistent feel of almond cream in the long and gorgeously subtle sense of smoky slate, floral elements, ripe fruits, and fine spices. This gorgeous sweet wine has the delicate exotic presence of an Auslese GK at other Estates, but the finesse and subtlety are firmly that of a Spätlese. What an amazing success!

2019 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett
    Mosel, GERMANY

    $4320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 9%
    Closure: Stelvin

    Other Reviews....
Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. This bright-white colored wine offers a rather subtle and, at the beginning, even shy nose driven by reduction. After a little airing, absolutely textbook flavors of white peach, white flowers, and slate emerge from the glass. These classic flavors for a Scharzhofberger carry over onto the palate, where they are joined by some zesty acidity and a gorgeous touch of whipped cream. Everything is simply in balance and this sense of completeness also drives the gorgeous finish and after-taste. This hugely impressive Kabinett is without doubt one of the finest at this Estate over the last few years!

2019 Max Ferdinand Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (375ml)
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $940. 00
    Bottle
    $11280.00 Dozen
    ABV: 6.5%
    Closure: Cork

Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel, and all production comes from estate holdings. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim) soils; those deeply influence character and flavour of the wines. In order to reduce quantity and increase concentration, pruning is severe and in prolific years a green harvest is carried out in August. The vintage is picked much later than that of most growers and is done entirely by hand. Three passes are done to select the best qualities to eliminate all inferior grapes and to keep perfect botrytis bunches or single berries for Auslese qualities and above. The same attention is paid to all vines from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins.

    Other Reviews....
Based on single berries affected by an early botrytis, the raisin selection of the three-starred Auslese is the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. Intense, very precise and spicy on the nose, the 2019 displays concentrated peach, almond and biscuit as well as lemon chutney, tea and ginger aromas. Silky, refined and highly delicate on the palate, this is a super precise and elegant TBA with great precision, finesse and salinity. The sweetness is certainly palatable but balanced by the clarity, precision, finesse and seamless texture of this crystalline and stimulating TBA that is extremely hard not to score 100 points. Maybe later, after some years of bottle aging? This wine has all the potential to become a legend. Bottled with roughly 400 grams of acidity, 6.5% alcohol and high acidity that was at 16 grams per liter in the must stage. 70 liters produced. Drink 2035 - 2100.

This is packed with dried-fruit aromas, ranging from pineapple to dates and figs, but it remains finely nuanced, rather than drifting off into opulence and density. With aeration, some ceps/porcini character appears, too. A super elegant wine, in spite of the enormous concentration and the sweetness that comes with it. The playful, filigree finish makes it really stand out in this category. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from fully-botrytized fruit picked at 210° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely exotic nose made of baked pineapple, coconut, mango, starfruit, almond cream, dried fruits, and honeyed elements. The wine is hugely sweet and unctuous on the palate, where a whiff of volatile acidity adds pep to the structure. The finish is long and alluring, but also marked by a touch of volatile acidity at this early stage. This superb TBA may eventually exceed our high ratings, especially as the volatile elements withdraw into the background. What an impressive effort! Drink 2029-2069.

From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Spätlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Spätlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent Spätlese that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2035 - 2070.

Plenty of exotic-fruit character from botrytis, but they haven’t made this refined Auslese loud, only more complex and tantalizing. Considerable concentration, but everything fits together so neatly that it comes off as restrained. Very complex, almost dry finish with a hint of vanilla pod. Delicious now, but so much aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese was made from partially botrytized fruit (1/3) picked at 115° Oechsle, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (125 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose made of elderflower, cassis, white peach, coconut, almond paste, fresh pineapple, and loads of citrusy and minty elements. The wine proves stunningly tactile and subtle on the palate, where delicately creamy fruits mingle with ripe yet gorgeously juicy acidity. The finish is all about bright exotic fruits, citrusy elements, and fine notes of cream. This gorgeous sweet wine may seem almost irresistible now, but it will gain from a decade of aging as the sweetness will have receded and given way to more nuances. Drink 2029-2049.

Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

Planned to be a Kabinett that finally got too ripe (100° Oechsle), the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * is clear and intense on the nose. Juicy and quite rich on the palate, this is a piquant and acidity-driven Spätlese with an enormously piquant and salty finish. Picke din the first week of October, it has laser sharp acidity that cuts through the rich texture that is based on 15% to 18% botrytis fruit. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Hang on to your hat. With its enormous ripeness and brilliant acidity, this monumental wine defies the limits of the Spätlese category. None of the exotic fruit that’s so typical for 2019, rather you're in the kingdom of the peach here ! Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * was made from fruit harvested at 100° Oechsle and fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (81 g/l). It exhibits some smoky, minty, and ripe scents of pear, quince, almond cream, lavender, pineapple, and smoke on the nose. It offers a superbly backward nose made of vineyard peach, cassis, elderflower, some almond cream, a hint of apricot, fine spices, and smoke. The wine proves superbly delineated and focused on the comparatively light-footed palate and leaves a light and dancing feel in the hugely precise and profound finish. This opens with a gorgeous sense of herbal savouriness that blends into the savoury stoniness. Crushed yarrow and potentilla not only play on the nose but also seem to give savour to the salty, concentrated palate. That saltiness is utterly mouth-watering and appetizing, flowing, smooth but oh so stony and herbal. Over the years, bio-pioneer Busch really has forged his very own style from this rhyolite site. The fact that it gets more morning than afternoon sun preserves those gorgeous aromatics in warm vintages like these. A glorious wine. Drinking Window 2025 - 2050.

Aromas of green and yellow fruit mix it with flinty minerality. The palate shows a little more fruit than the straight Marienburg, grapefruit with peel and pith, but without any tropical aspirations. Nuances of salt and quinine give an almost medicinal tang, but a generous texture makes the medicine go down without any resistance. Very cool, the essence of mineral Riesling. Drink 2021 – 2028.

The 2019 Riesling GG Hermannshöhle offers a pure, intense, complex and flinty bouquet with dashes of lemon juice and crushed stones. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and salty-mineral Riesling with great finesse, tension, balance and site expression. The finish is very long, salty and tight yet stimulating in its bright and precise nature. A fantastic Hermannshöhle!

The enveloping, peachy aroma with just a whisker of fresh pineapple leads into a mind-boggling micro-cosmos of flavor that's simultaneously rich, yet also supernaturally delicate. Sublime balance through the enormously long finish. Great aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification.

The 2019er Hermannshöhle Riesling -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, immediately captures one’s attention with its beautifully aromatic and complex nose of whipped almond cream, candied grapefruit, pineapple, thyme, rosemary, orange blossom, dried white flowers, and a hint of marzipan. Layers upon layers of whipped cream wrapped into ripe zesty elements make for an intense feel on the palate. The finish is hugely long, precise, and well-balanced. This is a magnificent dry Riesling in the making.

The 2019 Riesling GG Dellchen is enormously fine and elegant on the subtle but fascinatingly complex nose that intertwines stony notes with yellow-fleshed stone fruit aromas. On the palate, this is an intense, highly finessed and elegant Dellchen with incredibly refined juiciness and great balance and purity. The finish is very long and complex but keeps the finesse and purity. Very stimulating and salty—a great Dellchen GG and one of the finest I have had from Cornelius Dönnhoff!

Ravishing bouquet of a thousand golden fruits and a staggering interplay of diamond-bright acidity and great succulence. Then, just when you think you've processed all that, along comes a monster wave of minerality, which sweeps you off your feet. But you land on the beach, deliriously happy. The 2019er Dellchen Riesling -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, offers a delicately ripe and aromatic nose of pear, anise, minty herbs, grapefruit, tangerine, white flowers, and almond and coconut cream. The wine proves delicately zesty and light-weighted on the palate and leaves a zesty and linear feel in the long, smoky, and quite backward finish. It is still pretty much work in progress. It may well turn out to be even better than anticipated in a couple of years, as it develops more complexity and presence with age.

The bright colored 2019 Riesling Scharzhof displays very fine Saar typicity on the nose. This is like a spring mountain river full of Riesling rolling over crushed slate. It is highly delicate but lush and sexy, with great precision, crystalline acidity and lingering salinity, finishing with just the right amount of residual sugar. Impressively long and tensioned on the pure and stimulating finish, this is just gorgeous and possibly the most fascinating Scharzhof I have tasted in 20 years. The times of calling this is a Best Buy are long gone, but if you ant to taste the DRC of Riesling, you should definitely try it. Tasted in April 2020.

For the estate-riesling category, this is an impressively complete wine with white and yellow-peach, ripe-gooseberry and fresh-mint aromas. Medium-dry, succulent and vibrant with a very long, clean, minty finish.

The 2019er Riesling Scharzhof is an off-dry wine made from Estate holdings in the Wiltinger Braunfels, Oberemmeler Rosenberg, and Saarburger Rausch. This bright white-colored wine offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, apricot blossom, a hint of cream, smoke, slate, and still quite some residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves gorgeously intense and even almost powerful on the palate at first, but then develops great finesse in the long and subtle finish. Some minty herbs join the gorgeous flavors of white peach, chalky minerals, and a hint of whipped cream in the delicately airy and off-dry tasting after-taste. This wine proves a huge success but one which will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to develop its full aromatic finesse.

The 2019 Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG is very fine, flinty, delicate and charming on the precise and beautifully articulated slatey and herbal nose that also displays highly refined and discreet tropical fruit aromas. However, the nose is remarkably shy at this early stage. On the palate, this is a lithe Juffer Sonnenuhr with great finesse and a pure, mineral, persistently salty and crunchy finish that doesn't show much fruit and power at this stage. This seems to be a rather ascetic yet piquant and salty Riesling, and I am curious how the wine will develop over the next six months. The finish is very long, intense and still dominated by yeasty notes. This will develop to a spectacular JSU with time.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG offers a very delicate and flowery nose of almond cream, yellow peach, smoke, tangerine, candied grapefruit, and herbs, all wrapped into suffused smoke and reduction. The wine is all about finesse on the light-weighted, subtly creamy, and flower-infused palate. It leaves one with a superb feel of herbs, quite some tartness (in need of integration), and a hint of power in the long, broader, and assertive finish. This gorgeous dry Riesling now only a few years of patience for it to integrate its different components.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GK was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 120-125° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a most captivating nose of botrytized fruit as scents of mango, passion fruit, honeyed peach, dried apricot, pineapple, whipped cream, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves gorgeously unctuous and creamy on the fully sweet and creamy palate. A touch of power and a feel of intensity are brilliantly wrapped into magically focused and zesty elements in the finish. The persistence and aromatic purity are just stunning. This noble-sweet needs more than a full decade to integrate its richness and fully show its full nuances, but the patience will be rewarded.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

The 2019er Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Athuro (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label) was harvested at 83° Oechsle from 15 year-old vines in the prime Euchariusberg sector of the vineyard which was classified in the highest category on the old taxation maps, and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (approx. 40 g/l). It offers a stunning nose made of citrusy fruits, red berried fruits, herbs, spices, and wet stone. The wine proves superbly precise on the racy and focused palate as more orchard fruits mingle with minerals and some firm but ripe acidity. The finish is all about lemony raciness, subtle minerality and precision. This stunning Kabinett may prove already quite irresistible now, but it will only truly come into its own in a few years, after the flavors will have blossomed and blended together, and the sharpness receded: What a superb success!

From another old-vines single plot that is located at the peak of the hill on gray slate and quartzite soils, the 2019 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese #5 Förster opens with stony, herbal and super ripe Riesling notes on the nose, indicating a certain over-ripeness, possibly with a touch of botrytis. Juicy and elegant on the palate, this is a charming and digestible Auslese with a firm finish and some grippy tannins. More rustic than fine.

The 2019er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese Förster (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label) was made from clean fruit harvested early at 92° Oechsle from young vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (76 g/l of residual sugar). It offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, pear, apricot blossom, white minerals, herbs, and slate. The wine starts off with a touch of whipped cream on the palate before a great kick of zesty acidity and citrusy fruits brings raciness and energy to the experience. The stunning finish proves tart, sweet, and above all packed with fresh fruits and herbs. This amazing “drinking Auslese” in the making proves simply stunningly light and refreshing!

The 2019er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese AP 14 (known internally as “Fuder Ternes”) comes from fruit harvested at a moderate 88° Oechsle from old vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (56 g/l). It offers a magnificent nose made of white peach, lemon zest, pear, wet stone, white flowers, and fine spices. The wine is delicately creamy on the zesty and refreshing palate, and leaves a stunningly playful feel of fine herbs and spices in the finish. The after-taste is just amazingly light and playful. This is all about juicy vibrancy! And guess what, it this holds all its promises, it could even warrant a higher rating at maturity. The potential is there: What a huge success!

Theoretically, wine can’t smell mineral, but this Spätlese certainly has an intense wet-stone character. Then, mandarin-orange, jasmine and fresh-ginger notes develop. Still tightly wound, and also very focused and clean through the long, crystalline finish. Discreet hint of sweetness. Drinkable now, but better from 2023.

Although this is still very youthful, there’s already lots of sliced pear and white peach on the nose with a hint of wet earth. Quite a generous Kabinett, but with the distinctive raciness of the category, this already gives so much, but has excellent aging potential. Very long finish with just a hint of apple rings sauteed in butter, suggesting the ripeness of the vintage.

The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is deep and intense on the nicely reductive yet concentrated and spicy-mineral nose that reveals a flinty/crunchy slate aroma with generous but elegant and refined fruit and subtle grapefruit aromas. On the palate, this Auslese displays a fine raisin aroma of perfectly ripe and overripe Riesling grapes, whereas the textured is highly finessed and beautifully balanced. Great interplay between delicate exotic-fruit aromas and cool, northerly elements (also apples and fresh herbs) in the nose and on the medium-bodied, concentrated palate, the acidity very bright and stony and driving the very long, whiplash finish.

Fermented in stainless steel, the 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is concentrated, deep and spicy on the nose that represents a perfectly selected botrytis. The 2019er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from 100% shrunken raisin fruit harvested at 194° Oechsle and fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (340 g/l). An initial whiff of volatile acidity quickly gives way to an aromatic, powerful, and concentrated scents of toffee, mango, raisin, mirabelle, grapefruit, passion fruit, apricot, plum, and spices. The wine develops huge concentration and depth on the palate, where a kick of acidity lifts the flavors. Despite the sweetness at play, the wine remains utterly balanced thanks to a playful acidity, its grip, and structure. The finish has an outstanding intensity. We would not be surprised if this stunning TBA will not eventually merit a perfect rating at maturity, once it will have revealed its finesse: It is THAT impressive! Drink 2034-2069.
