Chardonnay

Chardonnay produces what is arguably the greatest of dry white wines, forming the basis of Chablis, Burgundy and Champagne. Beyond the simple primary fruit flavours of peach and tropical fruit, skilfully-made barrel-fermented Chardonnays include butterscotch, honeysuckle, fig, cashew, cinnamon, citrus and biscuit notes. Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne are some of the most famous names from Burgundy. From Australia, producers such as Giaconda, Bannockburn & Leeuwin Estate offer world class, age-worthy examples. Browse our top rated Chardonnay wines here.

Adrian Rodda started making wine in 1998, where he worked at Oakridge Wines in the Yarra Valley for over a decade. In 2010, Adrian moved to Beechworth in Northeast Victoria to make Chardonnay from the Smiths Vineyard, the oldest vineyard in modern Beechworth. In 2012, he started the "Chardonnay Project," where he sources grapes from the Willow Lake Vineyard in the Yarra Valley and makes wine alongside the Smiths Vineyard Chardonnay. In 2017, a third Chardonnay was added from the Baxendale Vineyard at Whitlands in the cool upper reaches of Northeast Victoria. The Baxendale Vineyard was planted in 1995 on volcanic soils at an elevation of 600m. Handpicked grapes are pressed to 500l French oak barrels (33% being new barrels) for fermentation and 12 months of maturation on lees.

    Other Reviews….
Vineyard sits at 600m ASL, planted 1995. All three Rodda Chardonnays are made pretty much the same way, which is a good way to express region/site, aside from the Triangle Block, which gets a bit move of a push in the winery. Friand and spice, floral, melon and grapefruit. Firm acidity, a little green apple, distinctly flinty and chalky, with something of a sappy-sour-edged, yet also slightly creamy almond finish of good length. Pretty tight, but very nice. Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

    Other Reviews....
Patchwork of sites for chardonnay. Organic/biodynamic farmed, zero sulphur as often is the way with Tissot.
It’s a lean and lighter expression but stacked with flinty, smoky elements and very saline overall. Green apple is the fruit connection, the rest is all stones and river pebbles and mineral water and brine. Racy, succulent to a puckering feel and ticklish to finish. It’s a distinct Patchwork release, complex but in a more quiet and compact frame. I still dig it. Lots. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Says sold out at the winery now, but there’s often some about at retail (or fine dining, if you’re flush).
Grapefruit, yuzu, a minor amount of struck match, salted pistachio, aniseed, and a fair amount of spicy ginger oak. It’s distinctly saline and savoury, nutty, again that ginger, though it’s the flinty and powdery texture that’s the highlight here, fine acidity, and a fairly long savoury finish. Not the most intense or concentrated in the flavour department – fine boned or slightly dilute – depending on how you see things. Needs a couple of years to let the oak fold in, but a good and distinctive style. Drink 2024 - 2032+

    Patagonia, ARGENTINA

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America. Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added, while a conversation between friends has turned into a partnership with esteemed Burgundian Chardonnay producer Jean-Marc Roulot joining Piero in Patagonia in planting, farming, and vinification of Chardonnay at Chacra.

Located in the Rio Negro Valley in northern Patagonia, Argentina, Bodega Chacra is comprised of 24 hectares of vineyards planted mainly to Pinot Noir, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. Piero also values responsible farming as demonstrated by his grandfather at Sassicaia, and each of the vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. After hand harvesting, the fruit is handled the gentlest way possible, with movements transferred by gravity, fermentation occurring in concrete, minimal new oak usage, and no fining or filtration at bottling. Piero's aim is to retain greater purity and transparency, and it's this ability for his wines to so clearly express their origin that's so engaging with Chacra wines. It's also one of the key attributes that only the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across the globe are able to achieve.

Mainque is a collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot. Mainque Chardonnay comes from 3 parcels of land with a range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

Such a flinty nose that delivers a full package of minerality. Quarry, chalk, gun powder and lime. The nose really speaks to you. Creamy and textured on the palate with bright but chiselled acidity and real tension. One of the best Mainque’s ever? Chacra’s answer to fine Chablis. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Quiet, flinty, a little sea spray and white flower perfume. Bright, tight, a fine chalky texture, ripe lemon/lime and white peach, a little honeycomb, wax and cashew, but still tense and kind of electric. Length is excellent. Great drinking and a beautiful refined expression of Chardonnay. Touch and go for 96 points really. Drink 2023 - 2030+.

This is probably the finest answer to Puligny or Meursault in Argentina and it will be hard to pass by. Beautiful brioche notes give a fine creaminess with mineral, fine reduction, beeswax and a hint of white sesame to the lemon curd. Founded in 1970, Cape Mentelle is among Margaret River's original five wineries, leading the way in developing the region's famous wine styles.
The Chardonnay is cultivated in two southern vineyards, located approximately 15 minutes south of the Margaret River township. These two sites vary significantly in aspect, soil composition, temperature ranges, and rainfall, contributing to a diverse fruit profile. Handpicked fruit is harvested in the cool of the morning and whole bunch pressed to barrel for wild fermentation and matured on lees for ten months.

2021 is proving to be an excellent vintage in the Margaret River region, but one needs a long memory to recall when they were not blessed with fine conditions. The fruit is sourced from the Crossroads and Chapman vineyards, mostly the gingin clone. Whole bunch pressed and fermented in barrels, maturation is in French oak (88%) and tank (12%) for ten months, before transferring all the finished wines to tank for a further five months with monthly lees stirring. A gleaming pale gold and such an alluring nose. The complexity is immediately evident with wonderful floral notes, stonefruits and vanillin oak, all finely integrated. Tropical notes emerge more on the palate than with the aroma.
Balanced, finesse and exceptional length are very much the hallmarks of this stunning Chardonnay. Drink over the next eight to ten years with ease. Drink 2023-2033.

For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. Laura Catena, great-granddaughter of winery founder Nicola Catena, is currently at the helm. Produced from a blend of four vineyards harvested at different times, this excellent fuller style Chardonnay is matured for 6-8 months in French oak barrels of varying ages.

A beautifully balanced Mendoza Chardonnay that delivers great value.

Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Showing plenty of intensity out of the glass are aromas of ripe peach, honeycomb and crème brulee which are followed by hints of bacon fat and spicy nougat. Rich mouth coating flavours of peach, apricot, honeycomb and crème brulee wrap themselves around the palate with a voluminous feel. Frederic Burrier and his family own the historic Chateau de Beauregard and the small but equally important Chateau du Clos, both based in Pouilly, along with half ownership of Domaine de la Rochette based in Milly-Lamartine. Frederic is a staunch supporter of the wines of Pouilly, and led the commission into the possibility of premier crus for appellation. Winemaking is very traditional, and while he has tried newer methods and equipment, Frederic prefers the results he gets by crushing the grapes prior to using his Vaslin hydraulic press. As of 2020 vintage, many of the plots worked in Pouilly are now classified as premier cru.

Smoky reduction slides over into reduction territory that definitely needs some aeration if you're going to try a bottle in the next year or so. More interesting are the appealingly energetic and textured medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel while once again coating the palate. The sappy finish really fans out as it sits on the palate though there is enough warmth to suggest that this would best be served a bit cooler than normal. Drink 2022+.

This bottling is limited to 40 barrels though Beauregard own over 3ha – the rest goes into the Château blend. The Fuissé side has younger vines and catches the sun, whereas the Pouilly vineyards are older, have a slight inclination to the north-east and maintain the austerity of the limestone mini-plateau which is also usefully ventilated by exposure to the wind. The 2017 was picked on 27th August and has excellent depth of colour, a brisk if as yet undeveloped nose, lovely weight of fruit and dances beautifully across the palate.

The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Cras 1er Cru comes from 3.5 hectares of vines surrounding the winery on limestone soils. Struck flint comes through nicely on the nose, very focused and full of energy. The palate is very well balanced with harmonious citrus fruit infused with flint and white pepper notes. Impressive weight and extract on the finish, this is turning into a delightful Pouilly-Fuissé. Drink 2025-2042.

This lightly wooded effort is also moderately reduced and tough to read aromatically. By contrast there is a lovely sense of freshness to the intense, detailed and rich flavors that don't have the same size and weight but there is a bit more refinement on the lingering finish. This though will need to develop better depth to merit the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2024+.

Moderate wood sets off notes of exotic aromas that include pineapple, lychee, melon and touches of both white and yellow-fleshed fruit. The dense, powerful and serious medium weight flavors possess an opulent mouth feel before culminating in noticeably warm finish. The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé La Maréchaude 1er Cru, from clay-limestone soils, is the one cuvée that seemed to just miss a bit of tension and energy on the nose, surprising as it showed so well 12 months earlier. Perhaps an off-day? The palate is much more like it: focused and saline, touches of orange rind, yellow plum and peach skin, grapefruit towards the tensile finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle for the aromatics to unfurl. Drink 2025-2036.

An overtly exotic nose is comprised by notes of mostly dried yellow fruit that are trimmed in enough oak to mention. The plush, seductive and exceptionally round and fleshy flavors that possess fine mid-palate density before terminating in a bitter lemon and slightly warm finish. While the description of this wine admittedly does not sound completely harmonious, there is good potential here for a wine in a riper style. Drink 2024+.

Situated 610 meters above sea level and overseeing Central Victoria, the Cobaw Ridge vines thrive in the granite-rich mountain soil, working hard to produce well-balanced grapes. This unique site's challenges, combined with the Cooper's dedication to sustainable and natural practices, result in wines that truly reflect their origin and time. No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling. The grapes are whole bunch pressed, settled overnight in a tank, then transferred to French oak (25% new). A slow, natural fermentation occurs in the barrel over 12 months, followed by an additional 3 months in a tank to settle on the lees. Full malolactic fermentation takes place, and the wine is not filtered, with only a small SO2 addition.

    Special wine, special site.
It’s all the things. Texture, weight, vim and vigour, minerally, gently savoury, pure in fruit character, fragrant and extends beautifully and long in the palate. Scents and flavours of green apple, ginger, almond, sea spray and brine, licks of pink grapefruit and a sizzle of tart lime. All woven so brilliantly together and bound in crystalline-meets-chalky texture. It’s a little nervous, a little skittish, tightly wound and briskly refreshing. I love it. Drink 2024 - 2035.

The Basket Town Chardonnay comes from three locations in the Adelaide Hills: Kas Sluiter Vineyard in Mylor, Dave Fresci's Piccadilly Vineyard in Carey Gully, and Commune of Buttons Vineyard in Basket Range. Due to cooler conditions, the fruit ripened about two weeks later than usual, around late March. Each portion underwent whole bunch pressing and was transferred to a mix of barriques, hogsheads, and puncheons. After maturing for eight months on full lees, the wines were blended and moved to a tank for an additional three months of maturation.

Even if this is a rich rendition full of white stone fruit, quince paste with pomelo dusted in ginger powder and daikon radish, it has the Kevin John thumbprint. Glorious aromas of buckwheat, like cold soba noodles, melding with quince, roasted nuts, tangerine and apricot pith. Always an incredibly intense mid-weighted expression, this iteration is gentler and more refined in a sense, due to immaculate poise and drinkability quotient. I often find this wine a bit too much. Not this vintage. Maritime freshness and a waft of unresolved CO2 carry length. Compact and filigreed. Almost breezy, intuitive of feel and effortless, in the very best sense of the word. The Chardonnays I have tasted so far from the 2022 vintage in Margaret River remind me of the 2014s, in their soft acidity and primal, almost unbound fruit power. Here, the 2022 Kevin John Chardonnay leads with crushed nuts, salted yellow peach, red apple skins, preserved citrus rind, yuzu, green tea and saltbush, before tumbling into the flavors in the mouth. Toffee apple, nuts, curry leaf and saffron. Concentrated, piercing and intense. The acid envelops the tongue and holds it hostage, while the fruit explodes with power. The Gingin clone is on show here. The wine trails to a soft, juicy finish. It is lingering, very good, excellent, even better after a gentle decant and served in a big Burgundy glass. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Gee, it’s a powerful and dry spicy wine. Lemon peel, cinnamon and clove spice, pear, fresh pineapple, apricot, and ripe lime, roasted peanuts. It’s flinty, zesty, kind of oaky too, but the fruit swallows it up, and carries on with aniseed, dried pear, lavish spice, tight grapefruity acidity, very intense, flinty and dry, chamomile and ginger on a finish of superb length. Chalky, spicy, oaky, a whole lot of Chardonnay power here, It’s bursting with vitality and it’s pretty full on as a young wine; like staring at the sun. Ah Curly Flat chardonnay, you good thing. You tease with tangy fruit all citrusy and white nectarines all spiced up then the palate tantalises with scrumptious leesy flavours and sweet cedary oak. The final flirt is a line of fine, pure acidity holding everything neatly in place. Pretty classy seduction. Drink 2022 - 2033.

Curly Flat delivers the goods. There’s nothing wan about this release, it has body and it has flavour and it probably even has soul. Pristine peach, nectarine and citrus flavours are served hand-in-glove with cedarwood oak. There’s more than a little texture here, silken and grippy at once. There’s a smoked wheat character here too, perhaps even some crushed fennel, though in reality it presents as one seamless gorgeous lipsmacking whole. Super gear. Drink 2024 - 2030+

Fermented and matured in French oak with 70% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. Bright pale straw colour with a greenish tinged outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted white peach and nectarine aromas drift through the nostrils trailed by hints of dried honey, biscuity oak, nougat and spice. Mid weighted, the palate is generously endowed with fleshy textured peach and nectarine fruit which melds into a back drop of toasty oak, dried honey, crème brulee and spice. Relatively soft acidity concluding with ample length and a creamy feel.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

Occasionally left unwooded (probably in an effort to compete with Sauvignon Blanc), Chardonnay is more often matured in relatively new oak adding layers of flavour and complexity. While full bodied, heavily wooded expressions go in and out of fashion, the demand for 'buttery' new world styles seems to never wane. Look out for super values from South America and New Zealand. Closer to home, the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Margaret River, Western Australia consistently produce outstanding wines.
