This Riesling (from Auburn, Clare Valley) was planted in 2002, at an elevation of 460m-470m. Harvested at night and gently pressed to tank where it is fermented at very cool temperatures for 2 months until dry.
Brilliant water like core with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Jumping out of the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents which intermix with talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes. Mouth watering, the palate is awash with a concentrate of lime and citrus fruits which are framed by a tight steely core. Some green apple, orange rind, chalky talc and mineral characters lend support. Despite its steely nature it shows plenty of textural volume. Crunchy acidity finishing dry and long.

The 2022 vintage is the 23rd consecutive bottling of Braemore Semillon under the Thomas Wines label. The Braemore Vineyard, planted in 1969, is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin. Once an ancient sea floor, the deep, sandy loam soils are free-draining, allowing deep root penetration which is perfect for Semillon.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish shaded edges. Aromas of lime and lemon infused with flinty mineral characters are followed by some Granny Smith apple and oyster shell like notes. Crunchy fresh lime and Granny Smith apple flavours are underscored by snappy acidity which provides the wine with great precision. Nuances of wet stone and minerals are also evident. Dry, crisp finish with a tense, mouth watering aftertaste.

Wet growing conditions that prevailed through to January ’22 were well-managed across the patchwork quilt of vineyards spread across the Hunter. Flavours of lemongrass, citrus and lanolin all contributing, this has the balance and length to transform itself over the next five years. Drink by 2032.

James Halliday – Australian Wine Companion

It is important to remember that this is the basic Brokenwood release, the standard, the bottom rung if you must. So you’d expect a decent wine for good value, without getting too carried away. Imagine my surprise… This is a stunning young Semillon. 2022 saw the weather gods doing their utmost to force local winemakers into their best Noah and the Ark impersonations, and while that may impact the reds, even that remains to be seen. Hunter winemakers are not unfamiliar with a touch of precipitation and have learnt to handle it. If ever anyone wanted evidence of this, here you have it. What a cracking young white! Apparently, wine show judges are in agreement as it has already picked up at least one trophy. If this is the bottom rung, bring on the ’22 big guns.
The colour is just the vaguest hint of lemon. The nose confirms this as very much the modern form of Hunter Sem – while retaining the ability to age for many years, there is also flavour galore in its early days. Good intensity and pinpoint focus with excellent length and a fine line of acidity. Lemon drop notes, fresh citrus, hints of ginger – a wine which dances. Fresh, balanced, full of life and very long, enjoy this now but please put a case away to share over the next decade. Try this, put a case of this away for a decade and at the same time, a case of a good Premier Cru Burgundy which costs five or six times as much, and then see which you prefer. You’ll wonder why you waste money on famous wines. Drink 2022-2032.

Barrel fermented, 20% new oak. Bryan Currie made this.
Concentrated aromas, nougat and almond meal with peaches and apples, just enough of cloves and nutmeg spice. The palate is leaner than the rich nose but still full-flavoured, focused, with grapefruit juice and wet stones mineral aftertaste. It has an elegant and steady flow. There’s a bit of salt and dried eucalyptus leaves in it too, nice one. Solid expression, built well.

Partial barrel fermentation adds another dimension to the citrus, snow pea and passionfruit of the wine, the rich, varietally precise bouquet marking a multi-layered palate that takes barely a split second to fill every part of the long, lingering palate with its grapefruit and nectarine flavours. As usual, exceptional value. Drink 2023 – 2025.

From the most outstanding single block of the vintage, planted 1996. Made by Phil Lehmann. A contrasting mood to Eden Hall's Springton, the intensity and tension of the season is encapsulated here. Spicy, wild lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fill an expansive and generous style, holding a finish of considerable drive, persistence and promise. Sourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks of varying aspects, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2023 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and gradual flavour accumulation. This resulted in wines that possess a combination of high natural acidity, intense flavours and amazing power.

A super scrumptious Eden Valley Riesling that delivers mouth watering flavours with terrific drive and force.

Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green around the outskirts. Soaring out of the glass with fantastic intensity are aromatics of lime, citrus and orange rind followed by talc and chalky mineral like notes. A concentrate of mouth watering lime, citrus and orange rind fruits engulfs every corner of the mouth, overlaying a chalky talc, subtle wet steel and mineral back drop. Outstanding power and textural volume combine with crisp, cleansing acidity to lead into a dry, super scrumptious finish that’s exceptionally long.

Old, low-yielding vines. Light, bright green-quartz. The delicately perfumed bouquet takes some coaxing to reveal itself, the palate following without the need of persuasion. It is bright and lively, bringing citrus, Granny Smith apple, and slinky acidity from the first sip through to the lingering finish. Drink to 2040.

Riesling comes in many different forms – skin contact, fermentation in oak, wild ferment, etc, – but there is a classic style of Riesling that never goes out of date. Mort’s Block epitomises that classic approach in its concentration of fruit and singular purity of expression. Floral and spring-like in scent: citrus blossom, lime, spicy musk, orange peel. Youthful, taut in structure with emerging white peach, ginger spice and citrus flavours. Time is on its side. Mort’s Block, which is the basis for this label, boasts old vines planted in 1970 and grown on red loamy soils over limestone. That limestone plays a role. There’s an almost effortless balance here with mineral-laced fineness. Watervale Riesling in a great year deserves more time in the cellar, but few will be able to resist opening a bottle right now. Drink 2022-2035.

It would not surprise me if this was considered the greatest Leeuwin chardonnay yet. You would get no argument from me... there is elegance and power here. Subtle layered wine. It was a year of great concentration and power. Has pear and lime character that is part of the DNA. The fruit is generous, especially about the mid palate. Has a subtle and not overstated flinty character with a lift of spice. The oak is brilliantly managed and complementary. It's very tight and precise and the whole-bunch technique gives it that stalky, phenolics character. There's a savoury almond meal character on the finish. Incredible length and power here. The minerally character on the finish is quite pronounced. In the top three, certainly, of any Leeuwin chardonnay.

This is a peach of a wine. One sip and wow, you’re into its wonderful world. It has one foot entirely in the elegant camp, and the other comprehensively in the domain of power. It’s seamless. There are peach, cedarwood, white flower, ginger and custard-like characters, along with quartz, though it’s all just rolled and reamed into one. The length of it; it’s brilliant. The off-hand confidence. This is a super release. Drink 2025 - 2035+

A Portuguese grape that doesn’t mind a bit of heat, and still stays fresh. Likely a taste of things to come.

This small planting (less than 1 hectare) of Fiano on the Jasper Hill property is located very close to the winery at the southern end of Georgia’s Paddock. The wine is made by Emily and Georgia Roberts and in the early years was produced entirely from purchased fruit. It was partially fermented in used oak and bottled relatively early (under stelvin) to retain freshness.

Nicely unctuous, with a skein of juicy freshness underlying. Full and textural in the mouth. Stone-fruit accents are juxtaposed against riffs on Pastis, marzipan, tatami straw, cinnamon oak-derived spice and salted almond. Super intense, vibrant and fresh, despite the intensity of it all. Fantastic fiano embellished with just the right amount of skin contact in the press. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Where to start. The texture, the spice, the warm carry of apple and pear notes? The assured confidence of the winemaker with a grape relatively new to Heathcote? It's all here. Inviting citrus, baked apple, pear, honeysuckle and nougat aromas. Waxy and clean, the palate glides, distributing flavour gently spiced and tightly controlled by zesty fresh acidity. Delicious! A multi vintage blend of Viognier, Semillon and Riesling. The Viognier and Semillon components were matured in Maidenni dry vermouth barrels for 12 months then freshened up with a touch of new vintage Riesling. Bright straw colour with a touch of brassy gold around the edges.
