Whistle Pig Old World 12 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey (700ml)

UNITED STATES
$159. 99
Bottle
$1919.88 Dozen
ABV: 43%

Released in late June 2015, Whistle Pig Old World is the last in a series beginning in Spring 2014, during which the Indiana based NDP (Non Distiller Producer) finished 12-year-old-rye in Sauternes, Madeira and Port barrels respectively, each released as a limited edition. This bottling is a blend of all three cask types, being 30% Sauternes, 63% Madeira and 7% Port barrel matured rye. Produced from a mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, the name refers to "Old World" maturation techniques, particularly those used for single malt scotch whiskies, which inspired Master Distiller, Dave Pickerell to experiment with his own whiskey stocks. A softer, more rounded rye experience than Whistlepig's 10 year old, it offers peachy fruitiness and vanillas on the nose with the rye tamed. The oily delivery has a vaguely herbal edge, while the finish is more expansive - ripe peach notes are tempered by hints of pepper, orange chocolate and mint julep. The result is an easy-drinking, low-key style that should befriend Bourbon lovers as much as rye completionists. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... this bottling balances sweetness and spice. The complex aroma suggests candied lemon peel, figs, caramel and a slight floral note. It's spicy on the palate, with orange peel segueing into a smooth vanilla and caramel exit. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

...This rye flaunts some obvious age through the wood and varnish notes on its nose; earthy and lean, with ample oak, like opening an old wooden dresser drawer to find a spent sachet hinting of dried flowers and cardamom. The palate offers gentle sweetness, nougat-like, but is driven mostly by toasted pecan and walnuts, with dark chocolate-covered almonds on the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
