Westward Oregon Straight Single Barrel American Malt Whiskey (375ml)

Oregon, UNITED STATES
$125. 00
Bottle
$1500.00 Dozen
ABV: 45%
This is young whisky (reportedly two years old), double pot distilled and made from 100% Pacific Northwest malted barley and fermented with ale yeasts. Unlike many micro upstarts who are keen to mature new-make at a pace to ensure a quick turnaround on their initial investment, Westward chose two-char American oak full size barrels instead of smaller alternatives. While the latter would accelerate maturation (especially during Oregon's hot summers), smaller barrels can also leave a "forced" impression on a whisky.

Tasting note: The deep polished copper penny colour is impressive in the glass. Shows some minor sediment. Wood and sweet spice notes are emphasised on the nose including fresh-sawn American oak, vanilla and delicate cinnamon with the barley taking back seat. Light on entry but gains weight and body at the mid palate stage which is nicely rounded featuring muesli-bar like flavours and creamy vanillin oak. A juicy burst before the oak input returns finishing with subtle notes of vanilla wafer, cream biscuits and a trace of peppermint tea to balance the earlier sugars. Wood dominant but a lovely mouth feel to this. A distillery to watch. 45% Alc./Vol.
